Where are you running this winter? Are you pushing through the cold? Treading lightly on ice and snow? Enduring a seemingly endless string of gloomy, grey days? Hitting the treadmill? Our Tuesdays on the Run topic this week asks you to share scenes from your winter runs.
Casa del Marcia is located in Northern Illinois. I may be closer to the Wisconsin border than I am to downtown Chicago. If not, it’s pretty close. I like to refer to this area as the Chi-town boonies. Typically winters are long and harsh here, although this year has been usual.
Where’s the snow??
I’m lucky enough to live in an area with several suitable running routes right outside my back door. I rarely drive anywhere to run. You’ll find me in quiet residential areas, and on wooded or prairie trails. Since we have so little snow this year, I’ve been able to stay on trails through the winter so far, which is rare. Typically they’d be snow-covered and/or icy or at least waaaaay muddy.
Just because we’ve been mostly snowless this winter doesn’t mean it’s been gorgeous. We still have sub-zero days, brutal winds and more grey than I prefer. Lately we’ve had more than our share of morning fog, which makes roadside running dangerous.
It’s very common to encounter all kinds of wildlife out on my run. Think coyotes, foxes, hawks, and of course plenty of deer. It’s nice to have spectators, right?
There’s something about the angle of the sun in winter. On a clear day the sunrises and sunsets can be magical. A perfect reward for getting out in the elements to run.
Where do you run? Do you get outside all winter long? Do you change up your routes based on weather?

Such great pics! I had to go rogue on the TOTR link-up…I seldom have my phone with me for my runs (and a lot of them have been from the confines of ‘Milly’s room…not too scenic). I know…first world probs.

Its been great that we havent had too many issues with the weather this year. Sometimes I wish I lived somewhere quieter. Im in the suburbs but it can be pretty busy around here, and i have to drive to any trails. At least in the city there was a path around the harbor with no cars, here I feel like Im always stopping at traffic lights.

You are super lucky to have such an abundance of nice routes right there. I run in my neighborhood . . . a LOT. Too much (especially considering the dog walks, too). Anywhere scenic includes a car ride.
Really hoping I can outrun the snow, sleet & rain thus morning . . .
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
I wish I could contributed… sadface.
After all the talk of how terrible this winter would be… it hasn’t been! That said, we are supposed to get a rapid freeze today, so be careful!
Rachel says
Our winter started off with little snow but now we’ve got plenty… I’m not a winter kind of gal. Lol!
Tamieka says
Wow look at those picturesque running routes. Lucky lady!!
My routes right outside my house are not that lovely but if I drive just a bit, I have lovely parks and lakes near by.
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I rarely drive to go for a run either. I live right next to state park with many trails, but when it rains it seems to be wet fr days afterwards, so I have to run elsewhere.

Those sunny winter days when it looks so nice out, but is so cold are always a little cruel in my opinion. We have had such a snowy winter this year. Sort of over the snow! Beautiful pictures!
Kimberly says
I live in more of a city so I don’t have anything pretty to look at, in case you count buildings and street lights lol. If I run more in the suburbs I see pretty trees which is really nice!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I try not to post the Wendy running reality tour–but you saw where I run! LOL!

Jealous of being able to step out your door and just run.
Darlene says
What Judy said but I work so I am used to driving each day and as long as it is scenic, It’s ok. But that ice is messing with my routes.
Melissa says
I have been really lame this year and have not run in any snow or outdoors and winter weather yet! Or maybe you could say I have been lucky? I have stuck inside and only gone outdoors when it has been warm and clear enough for a jogging stroller.
Teresa says
Your pictures are beautiful and definitely take the bite out of the reality of how freaking cold it must be! I just couldn’t hang …I’d be in the gym every damn day! ?
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Your running locale is gorgeous! The trails in the wintertime can be so beautiful! We’ve had some cold days in Philly but overall this winter has been pretty mild…it’ll be over 60 degrees today!
I would freak out if I saw a coyote on the run!
Laura says
You are definitely lucky!! The route out my door is not all that exciting and doesn’t really get any prettier in the winter unless there is snow (which we’ve had very little of). In the summer, I often drive to trails to mix it up and am hoping to do some later this week since the weather is so mild!

I posted a picture of my view yesterday, but don’t have any others. I haven’t run in snow yet, but Boulder’s only gotten one blizzard so far, since I moved here. We are expected to get much more snow in March and April, as those are the traditionally very snowy months.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I do run outside in the winter! It can get frigid here in PA but it hasn’t been too cold yet. There’s still time, though! I like to plan ahead and pick the two coldest days of the week to lift instead of run. However, I haven’t had to plan ahead yet as it is rarely lower than 20…. and lately it’s been in the mid 30s!
Jenn says
So pretty!
I run outside in the winter. Because it’s Florida, and even on the coldest day, it’s really not that bad (It is for us, but not really).
I do wish we had some variation in the weather, but I guess that’s just the nature of the Sunshine State.
Mary Beth Jackson says
I am blessed to be able to walk out my door and run anytime! I would hate to have it any other way! Beautiful pictures of your neighborhood!
vicki says
It’s so nice to be able to just step out the door to run … I’m fortunate to have that luxury too. I saw a deer once on my run… I had to just stop and watch it, they are such beautiful creatures (then I was mad I didn’t think about grabbing my phone for a picture)
Juliana says
winter weather looks so gorgeous everywhere and i love you have trails so close to you
Becky @ Ok, So Here's the Plan says
I have been terrible at time management lately and keep waiting until it’s too dark to run around my neighborhood. On the bright side, I don’t actually mind the treadmill!
Tricia says
You do have some very scenic places to run! I always love to see your pictures! Winter has been very mild so I’ve enjoyed not having to bundle up.
I usually don’t run at the campground without seeing deer. Thursday when I went with my dog, we spotted two sets of deer and Wrangler about took my arm off trying to get to them!
