Happy Super Bowl Sunday! I have to admit I’ll only be watching for the commercials but if there’s one thing our country could use right now it’s a reason to party so party we will. First, here’s this week’s workouts.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 5 miles
Wednesday: Full body strength training
Thursday: Run 3 miles + Swim
Friday: 1 hour spin class + Swim
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Crossfit
Did you notice something missing? Like maybe a weekend long run? Or any weekend run for that matter? The original plan was to ramp up miles in February, but with my a’hole thyroid, I’m still in a sluggish, dark, weight-gaining place. Because running is a struggle to say the least, I decided to keep my mileage down to a minimum until I’m at least on the path to getting this thyroid stuff sorted out. The good news is I’m heading in for bloodwork Monday morning. The bad news is the doc can’t see me until the freaking end of March. Whaaaat? I’m holding out hope a miracle opening will appear well before that.
Rather than continue to whine and drive you all away with negativity, I’m going to tell you what’s going RIGHT in my world right now. Because I refuse to be consumed with negative stuff.
We made it through kids’ passport hell. It took most…ok all…of our Saturday morning to go through the process so (fingers crossed) the kids will get new passports before summer. For those of you who told me how easy your experience was, it’s very different for kids. Essentially there’s no renewal option for minors. You have to start all over. Things got dicey when the people in front of us were turned away for using blue ink instead of black to fill out the applications, because I was pretty sure I too used blue. By some miracle I used black. Phew.
We saw the sun. So far, February is shaping up to be a sunnier month than it’s predecessor. Thank heavens for that! Who cares that the feels-like temp in the above pic was 4 degrees?
Strength training/Crossfit is going really well. I’ve made lots of progress. At the beginning I hesitated to even try flipping a tire because I doubted I could. When I tried, I discovered I could flip it a few times. Now? I can flip that sucker up and down the box repeatedly. I won’t even tell you how much I love the cleans and snatches and everything else. I think being in a chronic state of thyroid-induced anger and irritation fuels my fire.
Black swim cap = don’t mess with me
I’m swimming. Believe me, I’d rather stay in bed curled up in a tight ball, but my goal is to keep moving. I can’t say swimming and I are (or will ever be) a love match, but I’m getting in that pool twice a week. That’s a win in my book.
I’ve become a spin class regular. The music, the darkness, the power of cranking up the gear…..it all appeals to me right now. And I notice when I do my AeroDyne/kettlebell swing HIIT intervals at Crossfit, my riding intensity is way up.
I’m eating well. The calorie restriction I talked about here was an experiment, never intended to be a permanent thing. I want to be able to tell the doctor exactly what my calorie needs are right now to illustrate that something is effed up. In the process though I weaned myself off of sugary junk foods, oversized portions and mindless eating.
Alright, it’s just about game time so I’ll wind this up. I’ve taken my running fitness almost down “to the studs” but hopefully I’ll be able to start rebuilding in March, if not sooner. In the meantime, there are plenty of positives. It’s all about where you focus.
Where is your focus now? Do you let challenges in one aspect of life affect everything else? Are you watching the game?
I’m linking up with Tricia and Holly for the Weekly Wrap…
…and with Ilka and Angela for the Sunday Fitness and Food Linkup. Join us!

I feel like the post I have ready for tomorrow is really negative. I should have tried focusing on the positive stuff like you! But sometimes we just need to vent, right?
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Glad to see you making the best of the thyroid funk. What’s up with those specialists being impossible to schedule with? I picked the wrong field, clearly.
We need to schedule a healthy lunch! Let me know what things look like for you the next couple of weeks!
HoHo Runs says
I’m right down to the studs with you. I hope I will be ramping up the ol’ running miles soon. In the meantime, I’ll keep riding my Sanity. I hope you can get your uncooperative thyroid to cooperate. That has got to be frustrating! I’m going on record to state I’m not impressed with our February weather. I’m jealous of your sunshine. Now, I’ll really be on Mother Nature’s poop list. Thanks for linking, Marcia!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I think you’re doing plenty to keep up your cardio fitness. Once you sort that thyroid out, I think you’ll be surprised at the fitness that’s there.
Nope, i won’t be watching the game. Never do
Sunshine? I don’t know how you guys get it, we don’t seem to rate. 🙁
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
For one who is only watching the commercials there have been some good ones early on. – I am loving ones that seem to be protesting the political climate by showing the beauty of togetherness.
Megan says
You always looks so bad ass in your swimming pictures. I started doing our passports. I am being like sooooooooooooo careful so I don’t have a blue ink situation or similar!
Teresa says
You know, since my injury forced me to have to do more cross training, I have found that I really enjoy it. I’ve about decided that with my newfound “old age”, it’s probably best for my body to always switch things up…. keeping Aunt Minnie on her toes and keeping injuries at bay. At least that’s what I’m hoping.
I really hope you get some answers soon regarding your thyroid, I can only imagine how frustrating that is. But you are doing a fabulous job of staying active and positive!
I love Spin classes too and you look fierce in that pool! Hang in there 🙂
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
You always looks so bad ass in your swimming photos! I just started the passport process and I am being hyper vigilant to not make a blue ink mistake or similar!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Focusing on the positive is the way to go for sure! Getting back into the pool 2x a week as well and it feels good. It’s the running back to my car with hair that I dread 🙂
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Running aside you’ve been getting some great workouts in! Yep – gotta keep focusing on the positive!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I am currently watching the superbowl too. Boy that half time show was awesome! I am glad I got some longer runs in this weekend after the junk I have been eating this evening during the game. Good job getting your swims in. I have swam laps in years!
Kimberly Hatting says
Well, I watched some of the game, but tried my best to focus on the commercials, but we had some friends over and all the guys utilized the commercial breaks to “analyze” the game…so it was a struggle to really hear what I was desperately WANTING to hear LOL BUt Gaga totally rocked the game!
Sherry says
Hope your thyroid situation gets sorted out sooner! Great job with your cross training! I didn’t watch the game because of work but heard all about it.

SO MUCH HERE RESONATES WITH ME.
Except here? It’s been a lot of taking LIFE down to the studs and that’s ok too.
xoxoxo

I hate that it takes so long to get a Dr’s appointment. I hope an opening comes up soon. I thought a lot of the SB ads were pretty bleak – I guess the movies and video game ones. I wondered about kids who were watching!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
You really are making the best of a cruddy situation. Kudos to you for staying as positive as you can. Attitude can make such in a difference in difficult situations.
Katie Shepherd says
I am getting close to the year make when I had two panic attacks pretty close together. It may be associated with my heart problem or maybe stress. I doubt I will ever figure out what happened to me, but I experienced months of setbacks. I had worked so hard to get faster at all my distances but I paid the price for it. I’m not where I want to be, but just taking each day as it comes. Great job on your swimming and strength training! We might be getting a spin class at the gym where I work! Would love to try it!
Lesley says
I hope you enjoyed the commercials. I did not watch the game, but I heard plenty about it. It was enough that I did watch highlights after the game was over, but during the game I was watching a movie, reading a book, and then watching Victoria.
Anna @ Piper's Run says
Still an active week for you! I’m focusing less on running which feels odd but I’m enjoying so many other activities right now. Spin class is on my list to try but I just haven’t had the time when it’s scheduled.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
No appointments til March? Yuck!! I’m glad you’re making the most of what you can do, though.
Margo says
I watched most of the game but headed to bed after Lady Gaga’s performance. I thought the game was over!
Tricia says
I’ve got to get back into a spin class even if it’s a couple times a month. There was a time when our gym didn’t have them but they are back! Bad thing is it’s on Leg day!!! Oh well. That is crazy about how long it’s going to take to get to see your Dr. I do hope an appointment will come up way sooner and I hope your bloodwork will show what is really going on! Hang in there lady I know it’s frustrating.
Gina says
I love your mean swimming face! You go girl! Sorry you have to go easy with running lately. I too love spin but I have to use YouTube to do a class as my gym diesnt offer one.
Rachel says
Gah, I’m so sorry you’re going through this and believe me, I know how easy it is to let this kind of stuff get you down. But you’ve got an amazing attitude about it. Swimming, cycling, low mileage running — a great plan!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I’m glad to hear all of the positivity! I missed your post about your thyroid issues, it must be frustrating to wait so long for your appointment! But it’s great that you’re moving, flipping tires like a boss, and swimming!
I watched the Super Bowl and then as I started getting ready for work, I hear my boyfriend screaming about “you gotta see this”…I come back down and they’re headed into OT. I’m not a fan of either team but can’t stand Brady!
Jenn says
I am so glad all the passport stuff got worked out. I would love to know the reason for the black/blue ink, but I am fairly sure it is just a rule someone made up for the sole purpose of annoying people.
I’m sorry your thyroid is being a jerk. You are doing really well, in spite of it. Fingers crossed an appointment opens sooner than they said.
Right now I am working on endurance and strength. Or, at least I want to work on those things. My runs are going well, and I hope to be back in boot camp shortly. Things just haven’t been going smoothly this year, so I have to roll with it as best I can.
Michelle Rogers says
I fell asleep after halftime and missed the best part of the game! I woke up as it ended and was like, wha???? 😀
vicki says
Keeping a good thought as you get the thyroid sorted. I watched the super bowl, mainly for the commercials and Lady Gaga!
