Wow what a whirlwind week. Just when you think things could not get more weird, they do! This was my first week post-marathon. Here’s how the recovery went:
Monday: Rest, foam rolling
Tuesday: Rest, massage
Wednesday: Yoga/corework
Thursday: 3 miles easy
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 5 Miles sans Garmin
Sunday: 15 min. stepmill + Crossfit (you read that right)
I spent much (ok all) of the week recovering from last weekend’s marathon. The worst part about this recovery? The chafe from hell I got just above the bra line from my arm sleeve. Over a week since race day and the scabs are still not completely healed (I accidentally ripped it open because it gets dang itchy). Up until now, I’ve gotten off very easy in the chafe department. Apparently my luck had run out. I’ll spare you any graphics. You’re welcome.
It was a single parenting week. The Caveman headed to Cali on Monday just hours before Jill (BRF) headed back to CO. What running adventure will we cook up next? That’s a fun question to ponder.
Thing 2 had her first band concert. I still cannot believe the kids have been in school for 3 months already. Thing 1 had five members of her squad over for a rip-roaring sleepover. Actually they were pretty well behaved. Either that or I’m a very deep sleeper.
It was pretty darn nice to not have any pressure to run, although I have to admit the “trigger finger” to register for something was itchy. What little running I did do was easy and sans Garmin. Our weather has been perfect, even if the fall colors are past their peak.
My dad was scheduled for heart surgery Friday. They postponed it at the last minute due to concerns about his kidneys. It was rescheduled to Sunday and then pushed to Monday. I could do without all the waiting and uncertainty. It’s been 20 years since his last major heart surgery. He and his family predisposition for heart problems are why I started running.
My Crossfit face….complete with badass filter to hide the agony…and the wrinkles.
So yeah CrossFit. I planned to change things up post marathon so I took a page from Wendy‘s playbook and gave Crossfit a try. I slammed some balls, pushed the prowler and pulled the sled, among other things. I drew the line at tire flips. My back was having none of that. Let’s see if I can move tomorrow.
This week I will continue to change my focus from distance running to “muscling up” even if I do have a certain half marathon racecation coming up in a few weeks. That one’s going to be for fun.
Congrats to Karen who ran her first marathon, to everyone running RnR Vegas and everyone else who raced! Do you change things up post-goal-race?
This week’s Tuesdays on the Run linkup topic is Holiday Gifts! What do you get the runners in your life? What’s on your wish list? Stop by and tell us!

I always want to sign up for another race right after a marathon, and I also want to jump back into running way sooner than I should. I have never tried crossfit but I would probably hurt myself! I hope everything goes well with your dad’s survey. I would imagine all the uncertainty is very stressful!
Jennifer@Dashing in Style says
Just read you recap! Congrats again! I’m enjoying recovery after my first marathon last weekend and spent a lot of it mapping out my running goals for next year. Exciting!!!
Karen - Fit in France says
Wow, crossfit. Not sure if I would like it, would love to hear what you think. Sorry about your dad. Mine is having some health concerns which is also why I was home in Maine. (Didn’t plan on meeting with Jen, but she lives in my parent’s hometown and we run the same route. Such a small world !)
I haven’t decided or even thought about any races yet. I need a break ! I like stopping (well, taking a break) on a high.
Sarah @ BucketListTummy says
I did a lot of yoga this week after my first marathon last week and I think it really helped. Sleep, too! Chaffing is the worst but body glide has done wonders for me!
Kimberly Hatting says
I’m a huge believer is changing things up after a big race. I think the “running” muscles need some down-time and it does a body good to do other things. I have never tried cross-fit. It looks a little scary…but also like a fun challenge 😉
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I will be sure to say a prayer for your father. Hope the surgery goes well. I am not a big cross fitter either. Well I I guess I shouldn’t say that because I have never tried it. However, flipping tires and climbing up ropes does not appeal to me..haha.
HoHo Runs says
Oh my. I’ve had the arm sleeve chafing before. It’s now on my Trail Toe lubing checklist. Well, the whole body is just about on the list at this point. The itching finger can be a dangerous thing. I worry about having let mine scratch recently. I’m very impressed with your CrossFit. I wish I could find something different that I’d actually enjoy. Thanks for linking, Marcia. See you soon!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Whoa! I had no idea you took the CF plunge! Are you doing a class or solo? Becky says I’m too uncoordinated to do a class…which is really true. I’m like a special ed fitness client. Altho those tire flips shouldn’t hurt your back. That’s all glute and hammies…. I love me some tire flipping…
Sending healthy thoughts to your dad for tomorrow….
Coco says
Oh, my thoughts are with you and your dad. I hope everything goes OK. Crossfit sounds intimidating and fun in a sick sort of way. I’m sure it will make you stronger!
Kelli Wright says
Sending positive thoughts for your dad and his surgery. I hear ya on hard to believe how far into the schoolyear we are already. Can’t believe it is mid-November!! And hope those chafe wounds get better quickly.
Lindsay Loves Running says
Thinking good thoughts for your dad! The week after a marathon is always tough for me. Scratch that, probably a little longer. My body just feels tired for longer than it feels like it should! I’ll have to get it together for a half in a couple weeks though! PS chafing is the worst! We’ve all been there and it stinks!
Sonia says
Praying for the surgery and things go well. I’ve never taken the CF plunge though many have dangled that carrot. That reminds me to get my rear in gear with strength training.
jill conyers says
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Post marathon is the perfect time to change things up. Well, it is for me because I’m bad about post marathon blues. You’ve got this! All of it. xoxo
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Sending good vibes to your dad. Crossfit scares me with my own back issues. I know lifting heavier would be a good idea for me, but I don’t know if I’m ready for slams and such.
Carla says
Love and prayers for health to your dad.
I completely grasp and have lived how the uncertainty is the worst part.
Lesley says
I was itching to sign up for a race too. I haven’t had one since Tink, and since I’ve been consistently pain-free up to 4 miles, I started looking at Turkey Trots in the area. I’m not really impressed though, so I’m still itching to get in a race.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Thinking of your Dad & your family today. The waiting is absolutely the worst.
Since I very untypically for me signed up for a half in March, there is just no end to the long runs for some time to come much to Mr. Judy’s chagrin. He thinks my goal is cool & all, until he’s left taking care of the dogs on the weekend while I’m out for what seem like forever running.
Pray for a mile winter for me, even if the almanac says otherwise.
I’ll definitely be interested to hear what you think of CF!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I hope everything went well with your dad’s surgery!
CrossFit just looks too scary…I’m sure I’d injure myself trying to lift those heavy things!
Karen says
Thank you Marcia for the shout out xoxoxo
I hope all goes well with your father.
I think changing it up is good 🙂 I did go by a cross fit place to check it out a few weeks ago, but part of my issue is convenience…maybe i can find a way to implement some things at home.
Don’t hide that pretty face with a filter! See u soon, I can’t wait!!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Prayers for you and your family right now Marcia!
Oh wow, how awesome you are trying out cross fit. I am so interested in hearing your thoughts on this. I know Wendy has really had great success with it.
So it’s official, your marathon is behind you so that means you can get excited about the upcoming racecation right ?!? 🙂
Ilka says
Running feels so free when you come off a marathon. Usually after 2 weeks I start really missing it again though. Really debating whether I should sign up for one…
Can’t believe that sleepover went so quietly! Love your girl in the band concert! Very cute!
That filter is really intense – makes you look extra fierce Marcia!
Have a great week! Enjoy the easy running schedule!
Raina says
Strong running is good running! I like your plan. 🙂
Michelle says
Sending lots of healing prayers for you Dad! Running a race always makes me want to sign up for another, LOL! Cross fit sounds fun!
Thelma says
Jill told me she misses you and her Midwest adventures and looking forward to solidifying up some plans for next year.
She also thinks it’s cool you’re doing cross fit. She doesn’t have the bravery to be sore for 30 days post workout, therefore will always be weak!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’ll be keeping you and your dad in my thoughts and sending good vibes.
I’ll be curious to hear what you think of crossfit. Now that my racing season is done I am definitely ready to focus more on strength training…but crossfit looks more intense then my back/hips could handle.
Jenn says
I hope everything is ok with your dad. The waiting would have driven me insane.
I do try to fit in more yoga and other workouts after my goal race, but running is still the most convenient. Sounds like you are definitely good to jump back in to things!
Lindsay says
Ahh! CrossFit! So much fun, right? The soreness can be bad, but in a good way? Definitely be proactive about back-health (in anything you do) It can’t replace running, but I’ve really enjoyed CF-ing for 3-4 years, I don’t even know how long I’ve been doing it, haha. Oh and i don’t look like the “token” CF girl – toned, abs… oh wait I still eat a ton of crap. Lol. Hope your dad is doing ok!
