Hello October! How did you get here so darn fast?ย I’m linking up with Coco and Deb for an Ultimate Coffee Date.
If we were having coffee I’d elaborate on something I alluded to in yesterday’s Runfessions post. I joked about my school dropoff getup, but the reason the school was crawling with security is far from amusing. We’re on high alert due to a bomb threat. Before taking Thing 2 to school, I wrestled with whether I should even bring her at all or keep her home safe, with me. Many parents opted for staying home. But are any of us really safe? It’s a sad state of affairs and I think we all know that anything can happen anywhere, anytime. Should we allow fear to keep us from living our daily lives? That answer is a personal one for sure. It’s been difficult to see my daughter escorted into school by police officers every day. Sigh.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I’m excited to be heading to St. Louis this month for the RnRSTL Remix. We’d planned to make it a family trip, alas the Caveman in his maddening way, realized “no, I’ve got people in from Australia that Friday, oh and I was invited to the Cubs game too so I can’t go”. Pffft. Looks like I’ll be road tripping either on my own or with the teenager. Not the end of the world, but still disappointing. Although I’m super excited to see my St. Louis friends and add a new state to the running roster.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you there’ve been three cyclists killed in the Chicago area this week alone (and more injured), which makes me very sad. Two of them were hit by trucks who didn’t see them. It’s just so damn dangerous out there.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’m joining Glenneth for a FREE 7-Day Healthy Habits Challenge, starting October 5. Who doesn’t want to reinforce healthy habits? I sure do! There’s still time to join me by signing upย here.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I’m excited to be hanging out with Wendy, Erica and hopefully more in the “blogger press box” (that’s code for our stakeout at mile 13) again at the Chicago Marathon next weekend. We’ve got quite a long list of runners we’ll be scoping out. Let me know if you’re running, what you’ll be wearing and your corral so we can spot you!
What would you tell me over coffee? How can cyclists be safer? Do you have a fall goal race?
Karen @ Fit in France says
Bomb scare ? That is so sad in a school. I hate this ”new normal”. I have let my kids live their life and we haven’t changed anything in our routine here in Paris. But I do think about it.
I love spectating a marathon and seeing all those bloggers ? OMG how much fun will that be ! Take lots of pictures please.
Tricia @ MissSippipiddlin says
Dang Marcia that is awful about the bomb threat! You are right though anything can happen at anytime!
More accidents too. People just need to pay attention! Gosh, I’ve noticed that since I’ve been reviewing and wearing this LED Vest People almost pay more attention to me than the road! Course I imagine they can’t quite figure it out at first! Checking out this Healthy Habits! Thanks for sharing!
Coco says
Oh, I would love to be in the blogger press box! Cheer on Holly and Courtney for me! I will be running the Army Ten Miler in DC next weekend. I’m not sure what I’d do about a bomb threat at school. If the school was open, I guess I’d take my kids, but it’s a tough one. So sad on the cyclists. I really do not like riding on the road ….
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
That’s awful about the bomb threat! It’s always so sad to me that kids can’t even feel safe at school! I think I would still let mine go too, but like you said it is a tough call. How fun that you’ll get to cheer on so many from the blogger press box ๐ I’m going to check out the Healthy Habits Challenge – thanks for sharing!
Lindsay Loves Running says
That is so crazy about the school bomb threat – this world has become such a crazy place. Despite some tough things going on, it sounds like you’ve got some great things coming up. The Chicago Marathon is such an inspiring event! I wish I could get there for it – my mom is running it (her second marathon). Give her a cheer for me will you?
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
BGHS had some “chatter” this week about bombs for homecoming, but they determined it was just chatter. I hope they are right. I don’t have a ton of faith in our suburban law enforcement…
I am so excited for our spectating adventure! But so sad I can’t go to STL with you. Boo. That would have been a fun adventure.
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Cars make me so scared when I am biking and I really try to stay to bike trails. Gweneth’s challenge sounds fun look forward to hearing about it
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I’m sorry you and your daughter have to deal with that scary situation at school. ๐ My school never had a bomb threat but about two years ago our secretary got a really creepy robo call saying someone was in the school and going to shoot children! It was terrifying! We went on lock down. Despite what we see on the news, school is still a really safe place. That being said, I did empty out some of my cabinets in case I have to hide or I need to hide students. Isn’t that sad?
Janice @ Salads4Lunch says
I have the same mug! My hubby got it for me when he was in Chicago on business because I collect that series of mugs from Starbucks.
Have fun at the Chicago marathon! I would love to run it one day….
Emily @ Out and About says
Horrible to hear about the bomb scare, and so sad to hear about all the cyclist accidents. Yay for RnR St Louis, even if your husband can’t join you! The Midwestern Remix Challenge medal is a beauty. Bummed that I won’t be able to join you in spectating the Chicago Marathon next weekend but I hope everything goes smoothly. The weather forecast is looking nice so far!
Missy - Getting Fit to Find Myself says
I am terrified of cars when I am cycling. I have taken to riding only on sidewalks and trails, I don’t care that I have a road bike. I had a friend killed last year by a distracted driver and since then I continue to hear more and more cyclists being hit.

I don’t have kids, but I have already decided to homeschool them. What is going on these days? I had such a safe and worry free child hood. ๐ Praying for peace and less violence in this country and in the world.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
It’s so sad the state of our world these days. ๐ That’s too bad about the caveman, but you’ll be having fun, I’m sure! Sometimes it’s even better that way . . . shhh! Don’t tell Mr. Judy.
Healthy habits are always good to reinforce, cept I’ll be on vacation for part of it so I think I’ll skip that one this time. ๐ I suppose you could argue you need them even MORE on vacation.
HoHo Runs says
It’s so sad we can’t feel safe anywhere anymore. I worry about mine at college, I worry about mine at the local high school. Heck, I worry about myself with an irate customer walking in. You never know. You think I know what I’m wearing for Chicago? Bahahaha.
Char says
I can’t even imagine having school look like it’s a scene from some martial law movie. School should be safe absolutely but without the need for security. It’s such a shame that times have changed so much. I hope things settle down soon.
Farrah says
So very much agreed with you on how dangerous it is. I was walking downtown the other day and there was an entire intersection fenced off where there’d been a huge bike accident. There was blood everywhere and a trauma alert called into the hospital. :[
I really hope that bomb threat isn’t still going on! Praying for peace–it’s so disheartening what’s been happening in this country and abroad.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I hope you guys have fun at the Chicago Marathon! That is definitely a race that’s on my bucket list!
Sorry to hear about your daughter’s school…things are so crazy these days. We recently had some clown threats at some of the Philly schools, scary stuff…
Jen @ SprinklesHikes.com says
It’s scary how unsafe we all truly are, but that’s just the way things are. I remember living in Syracuse a few years ago there was a wave of runners being hit by cars and they all had done everything right – reflective gear, headlamps, the works. People just don’t pay attention anymore.
vicki says
Bomb scares at schools… boy have times changed. Have fun in STL, it was always a fun get-away for me when I lived in KC. How fun that you are spectating at Chicago… be sure to cheer on Holly and Courtney!!
