Now that the kids have been in school a full 2 weeks, I’d hoped things would settle into some sort of routine. Um, not so much. Chaos continues to reign. Before I get into that, here’s how my workouts played out:
Monday: Yoga
Tuesday: Run 6 miles
Wednesday: Strength & Core
Thursday: 6x800m repeats
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Strength & Swim
Sunday: Run 17 miles….make that run 12 + 15 bike
With the new fall season of extra curriculars plus school curriculum nights, orientations and what have you, we were out late every single night last week. Add that to mom’s taxi duties and you can stick a fork in me. Don’t get me wrong, I love going to all this stuff but by Friday I was So. Tired. No rest for the weary though because Friday night we hauled the teenager and her squad to the first high school football game of the season.
I love the solitude on my early morning runs. The heat and humidity I could do without.
Running: The jury is still out on whether I’ll run the full marathon in Indy or cut back to the half. My goal was to give it this week and really be impeccable about my training in order to make the best decision. Overall the week of training was solid, although I wish I’d felt stronger on those last couple of 800m repeats. Saturday morning was stormy so I traded my long run for some strength training. On Sunday though, it was still so humid. I’d have headed to my favorite shady trails, except heavy rain overnight made those not an option. I was ok before the sun made an appearance but after that things went to hell in a handbasket. I pulled the plug after 12 miles and bailed to the bike. It is what it is.
Garden: I told you about my pumpkin/squash issues in this month’s Runfessions. My Big Moon pumpkins are still hanging in there, although I continue to lose jack-o-lantern size varieties as well as winter squash. Sigh. I’ve harvested quite a few already though.
Food: Tomatoes and herbs are plentiful in the garden as well so I whipped up a batch of Tomato-Mozarella Caprese Skewers. So simple and so delicious! Just layer tomatoes with mozzarella and basil, drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper and refrigerate a few hours to allow flavors to blend.
Fun: On Sunday we headed over to a local art festival. It was a fun way to wind down summer (and play PokemonGO) although I noticed the running store in that area has closed. Sad.
What was fun for you this week? Favorite summer dish? Have you settled into your fall routine?

I made homemade salsa from the garden last week…and OMG. I’m practically eating it straight out of the bowl with a spoon. We had a brief break from the humidity, but it returned this weekend…it was fairly cool on my LSD yesterday morning, but by the time I finished, I could really feel it. And today? I’m just glad I was on the bike and had a bit of a breeze as I pedaled into the headwind.

The weather has been killing me here in Nashville, too. The heat and humidity have made my runs incredibly difficult and i’m impressed that you were able to even get to 12! Well done! I can’t wait until things cool down and I can get into what actually feels like a Fall routine.
I’m so envious of your Caprese Skewers though! They look absolutely delicious and few things are better than those cool, simple Summer dishes. Can you send some of those my way please? 🙂
My fun this week has been the lead up to the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend – I can’t wait! Good luck with the Marathon/Half decision!

Love the title of your post. If only…
I’m afraid nothing ever seems routine and normal anymore around here. Just when you think everything is under control, BAM. I’m impressed you are growing tomatoes (and pumpkins!). My squirrels would not allow that. I’m one of those weird people who don’t like a cold tomato. It probably has something to do with my childhood and eating tomato and mayo sandwiches. Thanks for linking, Marcia!

Those skewers look delicious! I’m in denial that it’s almost fall, I feel like summer just started! Then again, I haven’t been attempting to train through the heat and humidity like everyone else.

Back to school is SUCH a hectic time. I hope you get into the groove of your new schedules soon! We’ve had such a hot summer, my Mom’s garden is DONE already. 🙁
Michelle says
Those skewers look delish! I am over the humidity too, but I’m not ready for winter. LOL!

My school hasn’t started back yet so i’ve really been trying to make the best of my last weeks of summer vacation but it’s been so hot to really enjoy much!
I love caprese salad but never thought of making it a skewer! I’ll have to try that!
Hope you can find some calmness in the coming days!

The humidity is RIDICULOUS! When I ran this morning it was 75 with 90% humidity. Brutal. I got my run in as well as my playground workout. It became a quest…
I’m looking at October halfs….if you decide to switch to the Indy half, let me know…if you want me to tag along, I could be interested!

I’ve been riding my bike all summer rather than running long….I’ve reached that age where I just can’t handle the heat and humidity any longer.
I love tomato caprese salad and skewers…yours look beautiful! Think I’ll make some this week. 🙂
Darlene says
The humidity this summer has been ridiculous. I’m not a sweater but lately…UGH!
I have 2 halfs planned – Sept 18 and Oct 9.
I’m thinking t hat you will do the full cuz you like a challenge. GL!!

I was planning on running Sydney marathon next month and part way through training I realised that I just wasn’t feeling it. It was a hard decision to make but I changed to do the half and I’m just so glad I did. Once I’d made the decision I felt so relieved. There’s no rule that says I have to run a marathon every year. This year will be the year of the half. Then I can really look forward to New York next year.I guess what I’m saying is do what you want to do – not what you feel you should do.

I love tomatoes and friends have given us lots from their garden. I prefer feta over mozzarella but anything with fresh basil is fine in my book ! School starts for our kids this week, so it will be crazy for a couple weeks before a sense of normalcy sets in. I am looking forward to some sense of routine.

The humidity here on Sunday was RIDICULOUS. I felt so bad for anyone doing the Chicago Tri! We stopped at every water fountain. Longest 10 mile run ever.

I’ve pretty much accepted that the humidity is NEVER going to end here in South Carolina. That way, I’ll be pleasantly surprised when fall actually does arrive! I’m guessing we have at least another full month of this weather first though…ick.

The caprese salad skewers are yummy! I got the idea from a coworker last year at an office party (and they were popular), and I made them for the Christmas party I went to. I don’t think there was a single one left, and they’re so easy to make.
Ana says
This week has been chaotic for school start here too! and adding to that is soccer practice! ugh! I need somebody to have dinner ready to be eaten when I get home, so we can get to bed on time!
Those caprese skewers look divine! I need those in my life!
Pete B says
Yes, humidity please go away. Running in the swampy air is a chore. Is it September yet?!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
The humidity has been the bane of my existence all summer! I might as well have been swimming this morning it was so soupy out. Can’t believe your kids have been in school 2 weeks already! My boys don’t start until after labor day.

Local art festivals are my favorite part of the end of summer. I need to find one near me soon 🙂

Great week!
My favorite summer dish is my my mom’s macaroni salad and pickled beets. And good guacamole. I like food LOL.
I think we’ve settled into our fall routine. Little man has activities 4 nights a week, but Mr PugRunner and I are splitting it up. It’s made for some tired mornings, but we’re getting it done. We also have a lot of travel coming up and we need to be ready for that!
Rachel @ RachelMcMichael.com says
Yum! Those skewers look delicious, and even better if it’s fresh out of your garden!
Kelli says
The humidity is overstaying its welcome here, too. I am looking forward to some cool and crisp weather, for sure. Although I wish the daylight didn’t have to go away so rapidly. The art festival sounds like fun!

I am still working on my routine! With one daughter in college and the step child is hit or miss at our house it’s hard to establish one. Which works our great for me most of the time, but just when I get dependent on MY routine, they throw a wrench in there. I’m ready to see the H&H heat n humidity leave but not the longer days. Sigh. I need to get back to the campground to cause that is when I ride my bike most often!
Mary Beth Jackson says
Sounds like you are in for a busy school year! I think back on those days and it makes my head spin! Welcome to my world of humidity………ugh

It will cool down! This week was my first full week with my students. Wow!!! I am so happy I am off on Monday. 🙂
