Before we get to the rest of the weekly high- (and low) lights, here’s how week 2 of Indy Monumental Marathon training went. Not too shabby if I do say so myself:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 4x800m repeats
Wednesday: 10 Miles Bike, Strength, Swim 800 yds.
Thursday: Run 6 miles
Friday: Rest
Saturday: RnRCHI 5k (race report to come)
Sunday: RnRCHI Half Marathon (race report to come)
This. Except in sweat-wicking tech fabric. And sleeveless, of course.ย
Track Camp:ย High school track camp started this week. And yeah, it’s been hot. Plenty hot. I dropped off the teenager at the first day of track camp in 93 degrees and full-on sun. I made her tote a cooler filled with ice, cold towels, electrolyte drink and water. I got huge eye rolls but she eventually took it. When I picked her up hours later she was ever so grateful. That cooler has become a team favorite. Yeah #humblebrag
Fire. I finally found a way to get Thing 2 to leave the mall without a visit to the bulk candy kiosk. A fire alarm. I’d allowed the teenager to split off and do her own thing and Thing 2 was asking for candy for the 86th time when the alarm sounded. Some weren’t sure what to do, others ignored it completely. I figured it was best to get the heck out, just in case, so we did and I called Thing 1 and set up a meeting spot. Turns out the fire was real, in one of the restaurants. Maybe not a threat, but better safe than sorry. Plus no candy for the win.
Dog attack. I was out walking Carlo when one of our neighbors stopped me to tell me his dog had been brutally attacked by two of another neighbor’s dogs (all on leash). A dog walker had them out at the time and apparently could not handle them. The owner of the “victim” dog is elderly and uses a walker so he couldn’t exactly get in the middle of a 3-dog fight either. His dog has had 2 surgeries and is still in the hospital. I am sad and not sure how this will pan out. I’m not thrilled about having dangerous dogs living just a few doors down from me.
I’ll leave you with my favorite pic of the week, you may have seen it on Instagram. I’d been running past this area for EVER but never turned in to explore until recently. I found a nice trail around this water. Is this not a stunning way to start the day? Getting up at the ass-crack has its rewards.
This week’s Tuesdays on the Run topic is Runner Slang. Do you have certain “code words” you use among your runner friends? Stop by and tell us. I may have a few of these myself….shocker.

Glad you had a good training week! And that was smart of you to get out of the mall, just in case. I would have done the same thing. I can’t believe that dog attack! That is horrible!
Shandy Jo says
The dog thing would freak me out, when we lived in the trailer park there were some mean dogs and I was always worried they would attack the kids. The fire thing also scary, I agree I would have gotten the heck out of dodge.

You have made your daughter wonderfully popular on the track team with that cooler. Don’t you love being able to say “I told you so” to a teenager? That is a gorgeous sunrise and what a delight to find that trail. I can’t wait to hear about your RnR Chi races. Thanks for linking, Marcia!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Mom for the win! WTG. I guess you do know a few things…
I’m looking forward to lunch and hearing all about RnR….

Beautiful pic! I could never get up that early and snap a pic like that. So sorry to hear about that dog. Hope it’s gonna be ok.
Karen @ Fit in France says
The dog attack would kind of freak me out…
Congrats on your successful running weekend, I am excited for the recap.
MaryEllen says
I live in fear of dogs.. sadly. Where’s the link for the tee shirt! I love it!
Meranda @fairytales and fitness says
Oh man, that dog attack makes me sad. I do hope things turn out okay.
Kimberly Hatting says
Sorry I didn’t get a chance to see you while I was in the Chi-town vicinity. I guess all the crazy weather we missed was there for YOU on Sunday. I’d be freaked about the dog, too. Our little Max thinks he’s 10-times his actual size (when he sees a dog bigger than him), but I don’t think he stand much of a chance taking on a big dog…
Rachel says
That’s an incredible shot over the water. I agree, getting up at the asscrack has benefits!
Nice #momwin with the cooler!
Lesley says
I know that eyeroll because it was a specialty of mine when I was a teenager. Who knew parents know what they’re talking about?
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
Great week of training and racing! That photo is absolutely gorgeous! My dog was attacked by an off-leash dog at an unfenced dog park, and ever since then I carry Halt! spray to deter attacking dogs. Unfortunately, you just never know what can happen. The dog attack in your neighborhood is especially unfortunate because it could have been prevented if the owners/walkers were in control of their dogs, which should be mandatory if you’re out walking them!
Karen says
You rock MOM!! Teenager was sweet to admit she thankful when she cracked a sweat ๐
Your IG capture is beautiful…I do enjoy getting up and catching those very brief moments when it is quiet and there is near perfection sometimes.
I am sad for your older neighbor. I am sure it hurts his heart to see his dog attacked like that. It would be frustrating to know you aren’t really strong enough to get in there and help.
Tricia says
That is awful about the dog that got attacked. I often run with my dog and this has crossed my mind. I think I’d go toe to toe trying to protect my baby!
Ha no easy task about getting your daughter to leave without a visit to the candy store. Yea I’ll try this next time with my husband. ๐ ๐
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
Oh no, the dog thing is really scary.
And tho think it happened to an elderly guy who couldn’t do anything about it, even more horrid.
Michelle says
The dog thing is scary stuff. We’ve got “invisible” fences in my hood, so when they come running I just PRAY that the fence works. What a beautiful pic!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Oh hearing about that dog attack makes me so sad for your neighbor. Love the mom win on the cooler. Looking forward to your RnR recaps!
Jenn says
What a beautiful photo.
I am so sorry to hear about your neighbor’s dog. That’s heartbreaking. One of my pugs was attacked by a vicious dauschund once. Fortunately, my dog was so submissive that he immediately rolled over and the doxie couldn’t get to his throat, and Mr PugRunner was able to break it up, but ugh. The owner of the other dog were complete jerks about it, too. Irresponsible pet owners are the worst. ๐
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
Great training week! A half and 5k in the same weekend is intense. And I had to smile at the cooler thing- I would have done the same thing! And mom does know best.
Mary Beth Jackson says
Getting up at dark thirty does have some advantages! Sounds like you had a good week Mom ๐ The dog story in unsettling- I don’t like that kind of stuff either. #bothersome
Kayla says
You always seem to get such great pictures and that one is gorgeous! Great job on pulling the I told you so, as much as teens don’t agree…mom definitely knows best ๐
Sharon says
Ah sorry to hear about the dog. Hope it’s ok. What a cool place to run by the water! Looking forward to your RnR race recaps!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Awesome idea on the cooler! I am sure everyone was grateful. How did you like your 800m repeats?
