Before I get to the rest of the summer fun, here’s how my training went this week:
Monday: Swim
Tuesday: Run 6 Miles
Wednesday: Strength, Swim
Thursday: Speedwork 3 Miles
Friday: Swim
Saturday: Run 10 Miles
Sunday: Strength, massive gardening (I’m counting it)
This was one of those weekends that requires a few extra days just to recover from all the activity.
We’re in the midst of birthday season here. We celebrated Thing 1’s 15th all weekend long. The family party tradition has gone out the window and in its place was a multi-part celebration that went on and on.
First a train-trek to the city for dinner on the town with friends. These shrimp tacos at Green St. Local did not disappoint.
I may have dipped into this “party cookie” as well.
Saturday it was lunch at the Sugar Factory followed by shopping for Thing 1 with yet another clan of friends while Thing 2 and I saw Finding Dory. Saturday night was pizza, cake and a sleepover at the homestead with yet another “squad” as they’re called. Gotta love a good girl squad.
Thing 1 has one more week of Drivers Ed and I am very much looking forward to having those taxi duties behind me. Although they won’t totally be over because there’s still ice skating, gymnastics and track camp going on. With a schedule like this, sneaking training in has been a challenge. How do I do it?
5am. The early-morning time slot seems to be the only one that doesn’t fill up with other activities. Sleep would be good but oh well. It’s been hot here (not complaining) so waiting any longer just makes the run more miserable. As tough as it is to get up and out with the earlybirds, I feel like Queen of the world when my workout is done before 7am.
Here’s my I-just-ran-10-miles-in-80-something-degrees-and-I’m-delerious look.
I’m trying to buckle down and ramp up my long run for RnRCHI. Since it’s just a few weeks away, my efforts are probably futile. Saturday’s 10 miler was hot. In the 80’s by the time I finished with humidity you could slice with a knife. I’m not in 10-mile shape in the best weather. In those conditions is was kind of a joke. A cruel one. RnRCHI will most likely be steamy as well so its good to acclimate. And practice all the cuss words I’ll likely be using on the course.
All plans for RnR Dublin are finalized. I’m so excited I can’t even express. One more reason to get my endurance up. Plus there’s that little marathon (Indy Monumental) I committed to this fall. Sounded like a good idea at the time. Now? I’m not so sure.
This week: June is ending! Waaah! We’re heading to North Carolina for the 4th of July weekend, where we’ll celebrate the birthdays of the Caveman and his twin bro. Should be fun. I’m racing there on the 4th. And I’ll probably have some good MIL stories as well.
Does your training suffer due to summer travel/activities? Are you racing over the 4th of July weekend?
This week’s Tuesdays on the Run topic is Racing. How often do you race? Join us and share!
I’m linking with Holly and Tricia for the Weekly Wrap. Join us!

Have a fun time in NC! I can’t wait to hear the stories. Let’s schedule lunch when you get back!

RnRDublin?! That sounds amazing!! All of that food looks incredible, too.
Lesley says
I’m sure there are 4th of July races here, but I won’t be racing. I’m enjoying my running without any pressure from races, though I need to stop looking at bling. Bling envy isn’t good.
Ana says
Sounds like a busy busy week for you! That ice cream looks delicious!! I with there was some of that on my desk right now!
fairytales and fitness says
Yes, I’ll be racing on the 4th as well. I’ve missed this race every other year due to traveling so it will e my first 4th of July race and I am excited!
That cookie looks amazing. I can’t even imagine eating at a place called the Sugar Factory! That sounds like it would be right down my alley!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I would count massive gardening too! When I used to mow our lawn I counted that as workouts. 🙂 You have some RACES coming up! The only thing on my sked is a marathon Sept 11 which I am nervous for since I got PF and missed 2 weeks of training!
alexandra @ my urban family says
That party cookie looks like it would give you diabetes and be worth it lol Yum
Emily @ Out and About says
Happy 15th birthday to Thing 1! So exciting! I can only imagine you must be thrilled at the prospect of not having to be the mom-taxi anymore. I’ve never been to Green Street Local despite living just a couple blocks away – and those tacos/cookie look delicious. Yay for RnR Dublin! How was Finding Dory?????
Karen @ Fit in France says
You had me at party cookie…..
We are still having overcast, cool skies. Summer ? What’s that ?
Enjoy the 4th !
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Lately I have been glad that Im not training for anything because I have been too distracted by everything else that is going on anyway! No races planned for the 4th, but we’ll see. I will probably pass just because I am still getting back to running after taking time off to heal my foot. That party cookie looks amazing!!
Tricia @ MissSippipiddlin says
Yes, just how do you do it all Marcia? Superwoman is all I can think of. So when Thing 1 finishes Drivers Ed, how long will it be until they can drive? Here you get a permit at age 15 but can’t drive alone until 16 and then I still think it’s not “turn them loose” I think there maybe a few rules like a curfew unless you have job. My step daughter just got her permit an honestly it scares the h3ll out of me, she does good sometimes to walk and chew gum at the same time. I can only imagine her getting behind a wheel and being so distracted and scatterbrain. Well thankfully it won’t be my car’s wheel.!
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
I had to laugh at your long run in the heat & humidity being a cruel joke. That’s how I always feel on these hot weather runs! I will be doing absolutely no running over 4th of July as my last hurrah before my training starts next week! Good luck and have fun at your race!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Massive gardening always counts as strength work in my book! You are so good about getting your workouts in. It’s starting to heat up here and I’ve got to start pushing myself out of bed earlier so I don’t completely melt. I’m suppose to be racing over the 4th, but am dragging my feet and stll haven’t sign up. I’m such a heat whimp!
Kayla says
Look at all that swimming 🙂 I finally got myself back in the pool (other than floating) today. I am not quite where I would like to be for RnR Chicago as well but I’m hoping I’ll surprise myself with race day adrenaline?! lol. Finding Dory was pretty cute, I saw it last week as well.

I am trying to keep up – the 5 am slot and I have always been friends and I don’t have kids to tote around 🙂 I hope you have a great weekend and high five to us both for running over the holiday weekend – cheers-Coach!
HoHo Runs says
Both of my youngest teens had drivers ed in their junior year of high school. They even let them take the driver’s test at school (and boater’s exam!). I thought that was pretty sweet. My typical running time slot is 5:50. I can run for 40-60 minutes and still make it to work on time. I will not be racing over on the holiday weekend. I hope you have a wonderful trip to NC and a great race! Thanks for linking Marcia.
Coco says
Oh, I am so excited to hear about RNR Dublin! Sounds like you are doing pretty well squeezing in what you can. The humidity just sucks the life out of me.

I’m gonna be in your area the weekend of RnRCHI…except I’ll be pulling an all-nighter at the Christmas in July (12-hr)….swing by Lisle in the wee hours if you’re having trouble sleeping 😉 July is a big birthday month in our household…the oldest daughter celebrates on the 5th, and the son on the 16th (which was my paternal Grandmother’s birthday). My FIL’s bday was on the 30th. I probably told you that I ran the RnRCHI in 2014…I thought it was great having all that fab architecture to myself (and all the other runners) for a couple hours 😉
