This week’s Tuesdays on the Run topic is race gear. We all love it, right? Are you a hoarder with a stash that requires its own zip code? Or are you a minimalist?
Like many, I do love me some running gear. Ok lots of it. Brands? I’ve got a fave….or 6…or 12.
First I had some space in the closet for my half zips and running skirts. I’m not even going to go count them. Let’s just say the colors of the rainbow are well represented. Then I added A running drawer. One turned to two. Two spilled into four. Then I started “culling the herd” by moving little to never used items to a basement closet. I’m good about getting rid of old shoes and clothing that is stained, torn, worn, faded or has perma-stank. It’s everything else that seems to hang around.
Here’s the problem
I still have the first running skirt I ever bought 10+ years ago. It’s from Skirt Sports and the color is “Sangria”. A pink and blue number from Skirt Sports followed and I still have that one in my stash as well, although I can pretty much assure you I will never wear them again. Ever. I was unable to access either skirt for photo purposes so I suspect they’ve been relegated to the basement closet where old running gear goes to….live eternally.
I have the outfit I ran my first marathon in, as well as the outfits worn to my Boston Marathons, and the outfits I ran my BQs in. Do you sense a trend here? Yes, I’m a hoarder, of the highest order.
If hoarding running gear is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.
How about you? Hoarder or minimalist? How do you store your stash? Do you save gear for emotional reasons?
Patty says
Solidarity, sister! I’m all about hoarding. And I have my first running skirt too- skirt sports as well. ha!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
I also have a tough time parting with running clothes. You never know if you might wear them again! Between Rob and Im pretty sure our closet is made up of 90% running clothes.
meredith @ cookie chrunicles says
i am starting to think that the lulu pants i wore for my first half 4 years ago are starting to lose their luster! but i doubt i will part with them. instead i bought a new pair and will put these back in the drawer lol
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
This was a great topic! Oh, definitely a hoarder. Although I have gotten rid of *some* old running clothes! which includes my first skirts — I tried a few store skirts & those never worked for me, and then running skirts — but they got too big & I gave them away. Of course now I am devoted to skirtsports.
You know, it never even occurred to me to hang them in my closet; what a fab idea! Except my closet is rather small.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Hoarder and proud of it! And why do I have no trouble finding cute things to run in but getting dressed for work is a problem for me? Every.damn.day.
LaChicaRuns says
I am starting to collect my own, well, collection of running gear. My Black Girls RUN! group does a gear swap about once a year, so that’s helped a little. It’s easier to give stuff away when I know my runner friends will get good use out of it.
I do hope you run across those “classic” Skirt Sports skirts. I’d love to see them.
Stacey says
I’m somewhere between hoarder and minimalist-I have to really like the race swag to keep it. I will, however, buy multiples of running clothing that fits me well (tanks/sports bras/shorts).
fairytales and fitness says
I’m at the point now where I can start thinning out my stash!
Lesley says
I have a good collection, but the problem is, I’m always shopping online for new stuff to get. I have gotten rid of shirts I bought and ended up not liking, and I’ve gotten rid of sports bras that lost support, but I still mostly have what I’ve bought over the years. It’s so durable, I can’t find a good reason to.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
You know we just did a thorough house clean. We organized and threw shit out. I barely touched my running tub. (I throw all my running stuff in a tub.) I have a hard time throwing away marathon race shirts even if I know I will never wear them. And I have a green short sleeve from my one and only 50 miler. I never wear it because it is over sized but I can’t seem to part with it!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Wow, your first running skirt? I’ve been running for 10 years and do not have any of my stuff from back then. I have donated all of it. However, I do 10 pairs of Oiselle Long Rogas that I love and want in more colors. And I am OBSESSED with the tanks and buy them in all of the colors I can find.
Ana says
OMG ! I was laughing at your post because I could see myself saving the same stuff!
MCM Mama Runs says
Those poor items relegated to the basement. You should free them. They deserve to be used by someone.
I have a large collection of running gear, but I’m constantly culling the herd. If I don’t wear it, I give it away. (Very occasionally I’ll sell a piece, but mostly I give it to other mother runners.) Our MRTT group has gear swaps a couple of times a year. I’m happy to say I always take 3-4 pieces and I never bring anything home.
See, I’m a minimalist. ;o)
Marcia says
Erika you’re right, I should free them already. I need to find a gear swap. That would be awesome.
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
I de-hoarded a bunch of stuff when we moved. It felt so freeing and soul cleansing. But I still have a bunch of stuff that never gets used (because of my favorites, lol.
Darlene says
I have given away a lot of old stuff but there is still so much more.
I re-arranged my drawers & rolled my pants, skirts & tops so they take up less room and I can see everything at one time. But still that’s 6 drawers and a basket for hats & gloves & jackets in the closet. My stepsons are grown and gone & I have taken over both their rooms with running stuff UGH!!
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
Ha ha!!! Absolutely love and agree with this: “If hoarding running gear is wrong, I donβt wanna be right.” Yep, same here. Running gear is my only splurge, and I don’t feel guilty about it at all1
alexandra @ my urban family says
It’s so expensive it’s hard to part with! I’m the same way with my tennis skirts.
Emily @ Out and About says
It’s funny – I balk at going out for lunch at the cost of $10, but I won’t hesitate to drop big dollars on races, shoes, gear, PT equipment, you name it. It’s all about perspective and value proposition, I say. =)
Karen @ Fit in France says
I live in an apartment, and I have obsessive organizational tendencies, so I don’t hoard. Don’t have the room. Usually my rule is that if I haven’t worn in in 2 years, I give it away or throw it out.
Tara @ Run and Live Happy says
I’m a hoarder too!! This was a great topic! I never thought about all the stuff And I never realized I have a problem! Lol
Rachel says
I hoard. Darn it.
I gotta purge!!
Jessica S says
I thinned out a bunch of things I rarely wear a few months ago, but think I need to go back through the collection again. I find myself wearing the same things over and over, so I may need to send things on to someone else. It’s just so hard when you see pretty new things to resist!
CARLA says
shoe hoarder here
and I WISH I COULD BE A MINIMALIST?
and yet???
not enough to change my habits π
Karen says
IT is hard to let go out of stuff!
I want to be a minimalists, I really do, but my drawers are overflowing because I try to get rid of stuff and then think mmmm, I may need or want that lol
Pam says
I think I am in the middle here. I have actually sold some of my Sparkle Skirts because they were themed in a way that I would not want to wear them multiple times, yet they were perfect for a couple Disney races. However, I now hoard Lululemon gear and have an obsession with their Tracker Shorts and the longer length skirts. Oh and I love the Run Times shorts too. I will not count, but there is quite a large stash. I was thinking about my Boston shoes and they will probably be kept since that was such a special race. Otherwise, my shoes are donated after 300 miles.
Juliana @4WellRules says
I think I am similar to you-I have a hard time getting rid of some stuff but I do use almost of the stuff I have acquired
Sharon says
Total hoarder here! So hard go part with running gear!
jill conyers says
I’m a minimalist in pretty much everything. Wait. Except for yoga pants. I might be a hoarder of yoga pants. Happily so.
Mary Beth Jackson says
LOL! Why would you want to get rid of such great stuff? I had so many shirts I had the queen size quilt made and I am proud to say that my shirt drawer is filling right back up! Hoarder? NAH! I’m sentimental- big difference π
Becky @ Ok, So Here's the Plan says
I’m a hoarder, but only with running stuff. What if I want to wear it someday? π Plus there’s winter gear vs summer gear, which I normally swap out during the year, but right now I have nowhere to put the off season gear unless I pack it back into a box, so it’s all jammed into my dresser. It’s getting a little tricky to close…
Rachel @ RachelMcMichael.com says
I am a hoarder of ALL comfy fitness gear. I live in my comfy clothes. Haha
