Hello May! Before we get to the April goodness and May goals, here’s how this week’s workouts shook out:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 3 miles on mill
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: 4 miles on mill
Friday: Strength and Swim
Saturday:ย 8 miles outside before the monsoon
Sunday: Strength and Swim
Workouts
Because that posterior tibial strain continued to nag, I cut back on running this week and took it to the mill to avoid any pavement variations that may be aggravating it. It was a cold, wet week so being inside wasn’t all bad.
I’ve struggled with swimming forever so this week I let myself swim in the warm, light-filled leisure pool vs the cold, dark, barracuda-filled lap pool. Part of me felt like a pansy going there but if I can make myself swim longer, it’s a win, right? Plus it was totally empty except for one old guy walking with hand weights. My primary goal is to swim longer and take less breaks to cling to the side, gasping and chugging Nuun. I made myself swim slower and blew more bubbles to exhale more fully. I reflexively find myself holding my breath, you know in case I can’t get another one. Ridiculous, I know especially since the water is 4 ft. deep. I’m happy to say I was able to calm down here. Swim more with way less breaks. Maybe a breakthrough? I hope so!
Faves:
Trader Joe’s Organic Herb Salad mix. I’m not a huge fan of bagged lettuce but sometimes I loathe all the prep making a nice salad entails. I typically just chop up some romaine and baby spinach but this one is really nice because not only does it have a crap-ton of different greens (baby spinach, radiccio, arugula, frisee, chard) but also cilantro, dill and parsley.
Caveman returned from a business trip bearing my favorite coffee.
Not faves:
The weather. Not sure where spring went but it’s not here. Cold and rainy is not my bag.ย Both kids came home from school Friday with sore throats. Ugh. So far I’m hanging tough though.
Missing pint glass. Not just any pint glass. My glass from the New York City Marathon is MIA. I’ve scoured the cabinets and nobody is fessing up to breaking it. I’m getting worried. Sound the Amber Alert.
Goals for May:
Weightloss: I’d really REALLY hoped 4 months would be sufficient time to take off 10 lbs. Not so much. I cringe to be in weightloss mode and training mode simultaneously. We’ll see how this goes.
Tri Training. With a mere 6 weeks remaining until Espirit de She, I really truly NEED to get my behind in gear. Yes I’ve been running and half assed swimming, but I’ve done next to nothing in terms of biking and that needs to change. I’m digging out last year’s training plan today. Yes TODAY. I know it’s around here somewhere…
Codeย GEDS16AMB027 saves you $5 off any Espirit de She event anywhere.ย
Decluttering: I made some good progress in April but this needs to continue. I’ve been curious about Marie Kondo for awhile now. It may be time to put some of her tidying tactics to work.
Planky Panky: In April I was diligent about dynamic stretching pre-run and post-workout stretching and foam rolling. But I slacked off on much of my corework and my pushups. In May I’m challenging myself (and you too if you wanna join me) to plank daily and do daily pushups as well. I’ll be updating progress on my Facebook page daily so check it out if you want in.
How did April shake out for you? Did you set goals for May?

What is up with our weather? No fog in San Fran, but yay, I got to experience it here this morning.
No shame in swimming in the leisure pool! Those swimmers in the big girl pool sound mean. Is there a time during the day that they aren’t there?
Karen @ Fit in France says
Spring came back here, finally as of today. It has been quite cold too. No shame in swimming in the warmer pool !
I went to the pool yesterday and it was crazy. None of the laps were coordinated, people were passing and all over the place. I hate it when its like that. I only do breast and back stroke, because I hate putting my head under water, but swam hard 60 minutes. Felt good though my feet kept cramping. Ugh.
No goals for May. I’m goaled-out at the moment.
Jody - Fit at 58 says
I so need to declutter – I am so bad at that!!! Be kind to yourself!!! xoxoxo
Holly @ pink-runner.com says
Awesome planking!! Even though I teach CXWORX (core) I am also challenging myself to a plank challenge this month! I want to get back to 5 minutes!
Jackie @ The Freckled Runner says
The weather has been super weird here in Vermont too. Was in the 50’s 2 weeks ago but then snowed the following week. So ready for consistent spring weather!
I’m going to plank daily with you!
Nicole says
Marcia, I am sorry to hear about your post tib tendonitis. That really sucks. I would suggest taping the area during the day, to help take some strain off of it. That tendon plays a big part when you walk. Good luck
Char says
We’ve got weird weather too. It’s still hot and it’s nearly the end of April. I know at this time last year I’d worn a dressing gown to a race (with my running clothes under it) – that won’t be happening this year. Singlet and shorts all the way!
Alison says
I totally don’t blame you for swimming in the warmer pool! I have to have warm water to swim. Plus if you’re able to swim longer, that’s a huge plus! I had a rough April so I’m really looking to bring some positivity to my life in May along with some changes to my workouts.
HoHo Runs says
A light-filled leisure pool sounds like the perfect place for swimming! You go! I was always intimated by the “real” pool while pool running. I don’t have any May goals. Hmm… should I? I’d agree to the planking! But the daily pushups? EEK – out of my comfort zone and yeah #oldladyelbows. Thanks for linking with us Marcia!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
The weather this week was so dreary and the past few days have been cold. I need to get back to planking this month too! I think I have been saying that every month this year, although I have been keeping up with my push ups!
lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Bag lettuce makes it so simple. I use it all the time. It has been raining here the last couple days and is suppose to all wk..Yuck!
Coco says
I love the salad mix with herbs! This weekend I got a salad mix from the farmer’s market, along with some grape tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes – yum! I need to weed out my closet but I have a hard time tossing things!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
The weather here continues to be the bane of my existence – this week’s forecast calls for rain and cold temps daily…seriously?! Your time in the pool sounds like progress to me. I like the idea of some daily planking – count me in!
Karen says
I so admire you for swimming, it is tough stuff. I know your legs love it ๐ I hope that strain starts to feel better soon. I hate the aches and pains that hold us back.
It has rained here all last week, it is warm, but no fun being in the rain. I need to bike too and I do not like rain biking…I discovered that a few weeks ago lol it made my brakes really squeak.
No May goals for me, except heal! Plank more and push ups sound good though.
Kimberly Hatting says
I do planking every day, so I’ll try to remember to check in with your page. I did a arm/shoulder challenge for April, so I did daily push-ups, UGH. Not my favs, but they are effective. I’ll just live vicariously through you in term of triathlon stuff. Go Marcia kick some tail fin!
Sonia says
Leisure pool would be my route too! You swam and that’s what counts. I hope the tendinitis gets better fast!!
Pam says
We have had the weirdest spring weather here, but hopefully the warmer weather will stay now for a while. I love that your hubby brought home your favorite coffee. Very nice. I would be freaking out too about a broken race pint glass or mug. My Boston pint glass is rarely used cuz I am afraid it might break!
Mary Beth Jackson says
It was 88 degrees on the back half of my 18 holes of golf- I swear we went straight to summer! Plank a day- I like it- I need to join you ๐ Did you find the glass, stuff like that drives me CRAZY!!!!!
Lesley says
We have spring but our spring weather is all over. It can be warm, cool, dry, muggy or stormy. I never know what to expect and my weather app can change multiple times a day.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I just heard of Marie Kondo myself! I’ve been trying it out on tees just a teeny bit. ๐
When I do swim, which maybe won’t happen this year if it never warms up (and sometimes we get summers like that — last summer was actually on the cool side, which made for some lovely running weather), I don’t normally push the pace and I do a lot of breast stroke. Take it easy and you never have to stop. ๐
I have been in trying to lose mode the entire time I’ve been running! It does really kind of suck. Seems that’s what happens at a certain age — especially if you’re short, too.
Savannah says
Agreed that this weather is awful! I am so tired of snow in April!
Sharon says
I would swim in the warmer pool too! Congrats on swimming more with less breaks. I hope the weather changes for you soon and that your NYCM mug shows up.
Michelle says
I agree, this weather is for the birds. April wasn’t my month, so praying for May to be better!!! Hope you find your mug soon, and that your kids are feeling better.
Tricia Vaughn says
You have more guts than I do for putting up with the drama in the other pool. Geeze,
I sure hope you find that Pint glass! I’d be pissed!
I said I was going to start bringing back new coffee from the different places I visit, but I so failed this weekend. Came back with nothing! ๐
Ana says
Marie Kondo totally rocks at tidying up! I’m going to read her book again, so I can finish decluttering the dining room!
A plank Challenge sounds exciting! will check back to see the progress!
I hope the NYC marathon glass reveals itself!
Jenn says
Sorry about the weather! Poor weather can really bring everyone down.
Swimming is a tough thing to get right. I love that you are focusing on your form and breathing to improve your overall performance. It’s going to do you a world of good!
Hope everyone is feeling better soon! I wish we had Esprit De She around here. It sounds like such a cool event!
