I’m back from spring break. Boy how time flies. Especially when you’re having fun, and maybe even when you’re…um…not…so much.
I really hate to go all Debbie Downer on you but I’m going to come right out with it and tell you our trip was not all that. Yes we have high expectations and yes, we’ve been blessed with some really epic adventures. This one? Not so epic. There was plenty of fun and adventure, don’t get me wrong. I’ll cut to the chase: Thing 1 fell on the stairs on the cruise ship and sprained her ankle before we even left port. The very next day, I hurt my back.
Let me back up. We flew to Los Angeles where we boarded the beautiful Crown Princess. We sailed to San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego and then down to Mexico before heading back up to LA. Lovely, right? Right.
But the ankle thing. Thing 1’s track season flashed before my eyes. Hours in the ship’s medical center, multiple x-rays and $$$ later, she left in a brace and crutches.
I had a couple of gorgeous runs before all the voodoo went down.
But the sea between LA and San Fran was on the rough side. Not seasick rough but you definitely felt some rocking. I was up in the fitness center busting out a strength session, finishing up with some goblet squats. I was just barely coming up from a deep squat when the boat rocked and something in my back strained to compensate. I’m hoping it’s a mere muscle strain but visions of a bulging disc haunt me.
It hurts mostly when I get up from sitting, but sometimes feels like I’ve got an epidural needle in my back (yes, that low) sans pain meds of course.
…and then, to put it all in perspective, this happened. Just 2 minutes before, we’d disembarked from the Coronado Island ferry that docked right next to this boat. All four of us were standing right there deciding whether to tour the Gaslight district or head back to the ship when we realized that ship could not stop. It was pretty terrifying to watch. There were injuries on board but thankfully everybody on the wharf was able to get out of the way.
I feel like a total ingrate for whining and I tried so hard to be positive in spite of our challenges and was mostly successful. There’s always a silver lining, right? We still had plenty of fun, family time. Hopefully the injuries will be in the rear view mirror soon.
Thing 1’s sprain seems to be healing up nicely. Over the course of the week my back hurts ever so slightly less so fingers crossed things will continue to improve. I managed 8 woggy miles yesterday. It may not be pretty but I’m hopeful I’ll be able to finish my 10-mile race this weekend.
Be sure to join us for Tuesdays on the Run tomorrow where we’re challenging you to find ONE WORD that describes your running lately.
I’m linking up with Holly and Tricia for the Weekly Wrap. Join us!

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!! I think I saw that crash on the news!!!!!
I am not & will never be a cruise person. JUst not my thing… only way MAYBE is Alaska……
HUGE HUGE HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Emily @ Out and About says
Yikes on that crash! How terrifying! So sorry to hear about your daughter’s ankle sprain and your back injury. I can totally relate to the dangers of lifting heavy weight on a moving cruise ship – it made me really nauseous and I had to be very careful about balance. Glad to have you back in town. I hope you are in good shape for Chicago’s Perfect 10 next weekend!!!
Alison says
So sorry to hear your cruise was less than perfect!! I took a spring break cruise a couple years ago that wen’t totally awry too…I was laid up in bed with high temps and strep throat and our boat had to miss a couple ports because there was such bad weather. You’ll just have to take another cruise to make up for it!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Oh my gosh, sorry to hear that things did not go so well! And that crash is so scary! I hope that the ankle and back heal up quickly!
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Ugh! We’ve had some small mishaps. Neal got terrible food poisoning in Hong Kong and I practically had to carry him to and through Hanoi and he’s not tiny. We have been pretty lucky, all things considered, too! I hope Thing 1 heals well (thank god for youth, I am sure she’ll be fine!) and that you do, too. If you are not feeling it for the Perfect 10 – skip it! They have it every year 😉
Christine @ Two Runners Travel says
Aw that stinks! Sorry to hear you guys didn’t have the best trip, Marcia! I saw the videos of that whale watching boat and could not believe it…also was surprised that the people on the wharf weren’t moving faster to get out of the way! I would have been booking it! Hope you and your kiddo are feeling back to 100% soon!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I found it ironic that the boat was named the hornblower? And he kept blowing his horn?
I’m so sorry to hear about all the mishaps on your trip. We get so excited about vacation and sometimes it isn’t at all what we hoped for. Kind of like running a marathon, right? It all comes down to that one event…
What race are you running?
Kimberly Hatting says
I had not heard of that boat crashing! What the what? Sorry your vacay had some downer moments. We took a family trip to the Black Hills when the kids were ittiy bitty…..we made it to my in-laws in NW Iowa and had the transmission vacate our van five miles before arriving. We had to borrow a van (while leaving our van to be repaired), and a rock (from a weed-whacker alongside the highway) knocked out a window on the borrowed van. SO we then had to find a place to get THAT repaired. Fortunately, none of us were hit with any of the flying glass…but UGH. They say “things happen in three’s”…..and we spent the entire trip just waiting for the “third” thing to happen (which never transpired, thankfully).
Michelle @ LivelyChicken says
Sorry to hear you guys didn’t have the best Spring break. Hope the back and ankle get better soon!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Omg I saw that on the news! And I’m sitting here drinking my coffee yelling for someone to grab that old lady in the red jacket and get her the heck out of the way!
HoHo Runs says
Geez. The older lady almost didn’t get out of the way! That’s scary. It’s a good thing that Hornblower’s horn was operating properly I’m so sorry to hear about the vacation mishaps. I hope you and Thing 1 are doing better. Some vacations just don’t work — I could write a book about a spring break trip to DC. I think you need a vacation do-over to replace this one. Start planning. Thanks for linking with us Marcia.

I hope you and your daughter are both 100% healed soon!
Lesley says
That’s just awful. I hope both of y’all heal up quickly and neither of y’all need to miss much time on the sidelines. The cruise route sounds wonderful, but I would want smooth waters. My parents and I did a cruise in 2005 and I didn’t even feel like we were on a ship.
Michelle says
Oh my goodness that is terrifying. Reason #137 I have never been on a cruise, LOL!!! Sorry to hear about the bumpy trip, and hope your back and daughter’s ankle feel better soon!
Karen @ Fit in France says
So sorry to hear about your adventures…. Boo. Hope your daughter’s track season is not compromised and hope your back is nothing serious….
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I must’ve got my TOTR mixed up but oh well.
It’s always so disappointing when you have such high expectations and then things go wrong. I always try to find the silver lining, but sometimes it’s hard, especially if you’re in pain.
It’s been a while, but I’ve been on several cruises & yes, in some rough seas. But thankfully never injure myself. I did get seasick for the very first time on a small boat (not a cruise ship, just a day excursion) in Kauia a few years back & that was just awful!
Pete B says
What a crazy trip! I saw that boat crash on the news, were you in the video? In any case, hope you and your daughter get better soon!
Ana says
Oh my god!! that looks terrifying! I hope everybody was ok! I hope other than that, you had a good vacation!
Juliana @ 4 Well Rules says
Oh my goodness-so many things! but at least you are all safe (that crash sounds scary!!) and the ankle and back are getting better. at least you had good family time!
Runaway Bridal Planner says
Oh my gosh, that does not sound like the greatest things to have on your cruise. No fun from the beginning on the injury front. I really hope your back is okay, hopefully a few more days and maybe it’s just some inner bruising that will go away! So sorry!
The video is crazy, I laugh because everyone waits until last minute to move. But not laugh at not a single person going to pull the granny lady in red out of the way, another second slower on her end and she could have been horribly injured. But I am glad she wasn’t!
Well guess no all cruises can be amazing! But hopefully you had some fun times between the injuries and dr visits and you can look back at this trip with fun laughs!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
OMG I saw that crash on the news! I cannot believe you guys were right there. Sorry to hear about the injuries – speedy healing vibes to both of you!
Char says
Unfortunately sucky things don’t discriminate between regular life and vacation. I’m sorry that you didn’t have a great time. Hope your back is feeling better soon.
Mary Beth Jackson says
wow, I know all the planning and high hopes and then BAM! Glad you still has some family fun! That ship crash sounds scary, I mean WTH? Welcome back!
Sharon says
Wow! That is crazy with the ship! Glad no one on the wharf was injured. So sorry to hear about your daughter’s ankle and your back. Hope you both feeling better now!
Meagan says
Oh boy, that does sound like a rough trip! I hope the ankle sprain and back both start feeling better soon. I’m sorry to hear so many things went wrong. Holy moly that video was scary! It gave me goosebumps watching it. It seemed to take people forever to realize they needed to get the heck out of there, and that one old lady seemed like she barely made it. Yeesh! Thank goodness no one on the dock was hurt and thank goodness the ship wasn’t coming in any faster than that.
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Oh dang I hate you did not have the trip you were wanting to have. I sure hope the daughters ankle and your back will be better by now. That video is crazy scary! And that older lady right there seconds before it hit! I hope everyone is ok.
I saw some amazing pictures on instagram you too. I’ve never taken a cruise. The hubs and I want too, just haven’t had the opportunity yet. Maybe one day.
Lisa @ Runwiki says
You have no idea how sad I was when I heard you were in Santa Barbara the same day as us and I didn’t get to see you! It sounds like you had some glitches– so sorry for that! It reminds me of the Brady Bunch episode when Bobby finds the Voodoo doll in Hawaii. Was there any surf wipe outs? Tarantula’s? Heavy pictures falling? Okay enough of my nerdy humor. I hope you are feeling better and on the mend. Next time you are at all close to California, please text me.
