Here we are winding up February (what?) and it’s time for another installment of the Runfessions Linkup. Since I’ve been frequenting the gym more often these days, many of my ‘fessions originate there. Let’s get started, shall we?
Since I finally got myself back in the pool for another season of triathlon, I’ve also been frequenting the sauna…to thaw out and, you know, in case I get the call to do a race in Maui or Death Valley or something. Some people do stretching exercises while they’re in there, I get it: heat up the muscles…stretch deeper, yeah ok.
But there’s one lady who lies flat on the bench and extends her leg up and all the way over her head, pulsing her toes on the bench Β next to her ear. In a string bikini. Forgive me father, I try to avert my eyes, but I just don’t know where to look….is the circus in town?
Speaking of ladies, there’s another one I see in the gym locker room every Sunday. I get there early so it’s before 8 when I’m packing up to leave. Inevitably she’s camped out in front of the mirror, jet black hair, black leather pants, thigh-high stiletto boots and is applying heavy make-up. Forgive me for not minding my own business but I can’t help wondering where the heck she goes dressed like that every Sunday morning.
There are large, wide benches in the gym locker room, approximately 3′ x 8′ long. Inevitably someone will take it upon herself to cover the entire bench with the contents of her gym bag then walk away leaving the other 45 of us with a locker around that bench to fend for ourselves. I may have…um…nudged her stuff to the floor so I could sit down to put on my socks.
…and finally…
I told you I got a new uber Garmin for Christmas. The one triathletes use. The 920 something or other. I can’t say enough good about it. It does everything except run for me. I swear I hear it snickering when I swim. It tells me actual swim time vs hang on the pool edge and slug Nuun time. My old Garmin came with a HR monitor, which I badly wanted at the time, alas I never used, because I could never find the dang chest strap. That strap eludes me to this day. Things were going to be very different with the new uber Garmin. I vowed to reform. I’d put all the accessories, straps, booklets etc. in one giant zip-loc bag and stash it somewhere for safe keeping. Great. Uber Garmin has an uber battery. I got the watch in December and the battery is first now getting low. So I started my search for the battery charger stowed away in the zip-loc bag. Except I couldn’t find said bag. What?? I sifted through dressers and junk drawers to no avail. Finally I turned over the massive bowl o’ battery chargers that resides on a kitchen counter. Do you have one of these? Old Garmin was there. So was ye olde Garmin charger. Phone chargers, Fitbit chargers, tablet chargers, camera chargers. Alas, no uber Garmin charger or zip-loc in sight. Apparently the whole zip-loc plan was formulated in my dreams and never carried out. I suck.
Your turn: Are there weirdos at your gym? Do you lose stuff? Tell me you do!
Coco says
Wow, that is a crazy battery life! I just want to know why each of my 5 Garmin devices has a different charger! Luckily my gym is pretty empty when I use it, but there is still a bench hog from time to time.
Julie says
I always have chocolate milk or a protein shake after my workouts
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
I kind of miss seeing all the strange things that happen at a gym! Actually, not really. People that take up too much space in the locker room drive me crazy!
Kelli says
The gym locker room cracks me up. There are definitely people getting super tarted up in there. There’s also the crew that yaps on their mobile phones while getting dressed. Or takes selfies in very strange poses. Just right there in the middle of everyone trying to get ready. Some people hang out there so long I wonder if they every actually do a workout. At any rate, the beet boost sounds interesting! I love beets and I know they are really nutritious. I just don’t have the time for smoothie making π
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I do lose stuff all the time. I think it’s because I’m always multitasking!
Oh, the gym…I used to go to Bally’s back in the day, and there were plenty of interesting characters there…
Tamieka says
I don’t go to a gym but I could totally see the fun in just sitting and watching the funny stuff that happens there!
Omg..do I lose stuff!!!! It is ridiculous actually how often!
Tamieka says
To answer the giveaway question: I am a ctually not good at recovery….a work in progress for me!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Ah the gym crazies…yep I have many…don’t know what to say about the woman in the sauna ?!?!!
Despite my best efforts I’m always misplacing an attachment/charger/etc. – I think it’s a sign I need to purge the closets again π
Post workout drink? Almost always chocolate milk!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
You should strike up a conversation with the woman in leather pants! Maybe you can find out where he is going. π
Kimberly G says
I swear I see the weirdest things in the locker room at the gym. I just think people have no reservations about waliking around compeltley naked – it baffles me!
Regarding recovery – I could do a better job for sure. I know I’m going to have to get this under control once I start marathon training later on this year!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Oh man how frustrating! I still don’t know how I lost my original FitBit charger…it vanished into thin air! The gym definitely has some characters…I have a few in my gym at work that crack me up!
HoHo Runs says
If Beet Boost helps with mental clarity, then heck yeah sign me up! I have a pewter pitcher sitting on my kitchen counter full of cords and chargers. If it’s not there, I know it’s not anywhere. I’m guessing Gym-Elvira is going to work! A-hem. The circus is always in town! Thanks for the linkup.
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
I workout at home, but I miss the people watching! Thanks for the giveaway!
RFC says
GIRL. TRUE STORY: I worked at a gym that shared a building with a world famous circus performing arts school, and the students frequented our gym. It literally WAS circus town. And there were ALWAYS girls in the sauna doing crazy things like that! Except they’d either be a) in sweat clothes (in the hot sauna!) or b) naked. It was crazy town for sure π
Jenn @ RunWithSole says
Oh my. The gym locker room is one of the weirdest places to ever frequent. I’m a trainer at the Y and since it’s has a wide variety of members, there is always something strange going on in the locker room. I may have to save those stories for another Runfessions π
I’m interested in that Beet Boost. I’ve been wanting to try some myself. I hope I win! π
karen says
There are some strange characters at my gym. I have a few invisible fighters, always interesting to watch. I would feel so silly invisible fighting…I just want to be crazy enough to not care lol I envy them.
My kitchen is full of all kinds of chargers …makes me nutty they are all different!
alexandra @ my urban family says
I don’t know if it’s because it’s so early when I’m usually there, but people always seem to behave so strangely at the gym. At least I know I’m not the only one noticing! ha
reb says
My mental clarity needs Beet Boost. Great giveaway!
Gina Hanzel says
OMG! I seriously laughed this ENTIRE post! you are so funny. I’m actually very surprised about the lady in the sauna. Seriously? Can you imagine if she farted? Sorry, just had to say it!
Michelle @ LivelyChicken says
Haha this made me laugh! I have had similar experiences at the gym, especially in the locker room. Some people leave their stuff all over the place. I always wonder what their own bedroom looks like if that’s what they think is appropriate for a public locker room!
I’ve never tried Beet Boost so would love to be the lucky winner!
Kate says
I’m a BIG believer in the power of beet juice! I definitely feel like I ride stronger for longer when I’m drinking beet juice. I’ve been drinking the V8 Purple Power juice, but Beet Boost sounds like a great (way more portable) answer.
Allie says
I these are universal gym truths! And yes, I have been known to “nudge” a thing or two π
My favorite line: “I swear I hear it snickering when I swim!” LOL!! Mine does too!
And the Beet Boost? Just got some and tried it in a protein bar recipe – OMG delicious!!
Lesley says
When I did go to the gym, there were also women who would use up the whole bench with their stuff. I got to the point where I didn’t care and put my bag on top of their stuff. If they didn’t want my bag on top of their stuff, they should keep their stuff in their bag. I can be neat, and so can they.
Karen @ Fit in France says
Yeah, I’ve done some nudging too when sitting on the bench at the gym. And the string thing ? That is why I don’t go into the sauna ! LOL
Becky @ Ok, So Here's the Plan says
I definitely do not miss gym locker rooms. People are so weird.
I have been trying to be better about stretching/doing yoga for recovery. I am also a pretty big fan of compression socks.
Jody - Fit at 58 says
I do weights & cardio so a mixture of simple & complex carbs, protein & fats! π
Kim Hatting says
gosh…I thought all the weirdos were in Iowa. Apparently a few have wandered your way and set up residency LOL I’m not into beets, but I could be persuaded to drink them mixed with tart cherry juice… π
Edye says
To make the most of my performance I listen to some happy/upbeat music to lift my spirits π
Blessings,
Edye // Gracefulcoffee
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Guess pros have to work out too, huh? I LOVE the sauna! Luckily I’m usually the only one in there. The gym I use is rather run down, but it’s inexpensive & it does have that sauna & not too crowded, either.
I’m still boggling over the fact you didn’t have to charge your Garmin since December . . .
But yes, I do lose stuff! Doesn’t everybody?
Tricia @ MissSippipiddlin says
Ok so I’m a day late and apparently a dollar short with my runfession, but that’s all the time on the dollar, who isn’t? I’m sliding in by the hair on my chinny chin chin!
My gym is way to small to be enjoying the gym runfessions you have! I saw a bunch of girls dressed in the same black fashion last night, but I think their profession was more into adult entertainment. π
Thanks Marcia for letting me tag along today! It’s back to fun in Sin City for us today!
Lauren says
I totally am not a gym frequenter all too often but these stories are too funny! And why can’t all garmins have the same charger?! My dog recently chewed my Forerunner 220 and I had such a hard time finding the exact replacement charger!
Char says
The lady in black is probably on her way to church. Not exactly sure what kind of church but you did say every Sunday didn’t you?
Phaedra @ Blisters and Black Toenails says
OMG I am the QUEEN of losing things. My hubby just laughs at me now. I have the 920 as well and I absolutely LOVE it. SO much data! I keep the watch in the charger, plugged in sitting on the kitchen counter. I’ve heard about Beet Boost but have yet to try it.
Sharon says
Ah sorry to hear about your charger! I hope you found it. I’m interested in beet boost. I’ve heard good things! I don’t do much for recovery other than compression socks and foam rolling occasionally.
Jordan D. says
I’m not so good at recovering from a workout. I should really try foam rolling haha. Awesome giveaway though, this stuff sounds great!
Mary Beth Jackson says
I am experimenting with the beet juice- it takes a second or two for my mouth to adjust but I think it works! I would love to try this brand- the bottled stuff is expensive! And where is that lady going on Sunday morning? You just need to ask her π Inquiring minds want to know!
Tricia @ MissSippipiddlin says
Just now entering the giveaway! I’ve read quite a bit about tart cherry juice for recovery, hey can’t hurt right!
Vera Khule says
For recovery i usually shake up some protein and drink it in the car after the gym.
Renata says
I drink a lot of water with electrolytes to better my recovery as well as stretching out my muscles too. Thank you so much as the Beet Boost sounds fabulous!
Raymond says
Keep hydrated and make sure to have a good cool down period. Thanks!
Erica @ Erica Finds says
My gym has a few prize weirdos. My fave is “The Sweater.” He wears extra clothes and goes mega hard on stairmill and treadmill and uses a zillion towels but never quite cleans it up. BLECH!
I use SOS Rehydrate and a few other products but I am keep to try this one! In LA they had a canned beet juice. It was … not the tastiest. Kind of like drinking the juice from a jar of beets!
Thanks for linking up!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Dying to try this beet boost that I’ve been hearing so much about. I usually take some BCAA’s after a tough strength workout and that helps, also tart cherry juice is one of my favs! Would love to try this!
Sarah N says
I’m lucky that my company has its own gym. People typically are on their best behavior in the locker room when they have a staff meeting with the same people am hour later.
I’ve been working on upping my protein after hard runs and workouts to improve my recovery.
Judith says
i make sure to foam roll
katrina says
I usually just drink water but would like to try beet!!
Amy Lauren says
For recovery I try to foam roll and drink a protein shake.
tara pittman says
I have just started to run aft. injury. So I am walking and running
Jen @ SprinklesHikes.com says
I’d ask her where she goes, but maybe that’s just me π If you guys see each other every week it’s safe to say it’s okay to ask π
For my recovery – short runs just some water and stretching. Longer than 5, less than 10 – Nuun and snackage followed by stretches; longer than 10 – Nuun, foam rolling, and compression socks. Works like a charm!
Debbie F says
I make sure to have bubbly water with me at all times – I don’t really like flat water and bubbly water tricks my mind into thinking I’m having a soda π
I don’t go to the gym anymore – I can’t stand other people’s sweat -bleh – one time when I was on the treadmill this really sweaty guy started talking to me – he was standing right in front of the fan and his sweat was blowing all over me. good god.
I don’t miss that.
π
thanks!
Lisa Jagodzinski says
An important thing for me to do for recovery after a work out is to stau hydrates and nourished well and also stretching is very important for me to do
Leela says
To stay hydrated.
Angela Saver says
For my recovery, I always drink a glass of milk & eat Greek yogurt!
Zenaida Arroyo says
We have 2 or 3 benches in the locker room in my gym and one girl likes to use the whole bench for her stuff. She takes everything out of the locker and leaves it there while she showers. Really? Why? Why not take stuff out when you need it?
