Before we get to the highlights, here’s how the week in workouts went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 5 miles
Wednesday: Swim and Yoga
Thursday: Run 4 mile progression run
Friday: Run 8 miles
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Strength and Swim
It was a busy and stressful week. I was the mystery reader for Thing 2’s 4th grade class. It was super mysterious when I showed up to read on the wrong day. Thing 2 also had her holiday concert, which was awesome. Friday a student came to our high school with a concealed gun. That is definitely not a call you want to get. All ended peacefully so there’s that. But still. So scary.
Friday night I headed into the city to meet the Caveman for the first of the season’s holiday parties. Other than the Caveman, I didn’t know a soul. Except for a close talker, it was fun. Mostly because I found a swimmer….and then a runner in the crowd and talked shop. Haha!
I’m happy to report I did not over-indulge. Probably because I was yakking so much. But holy mama we were out laaaate for this geriatric. I didn’t get to sleep until 2am. Thank heavens Saturday was a rest day. And rest I did. Slept until 9:15am. Unheard of for me.
Although it killed me to not run on Sunday because the weather was perfection, Caveman and I did our usual Sunday strength session and I chased that with a swim. The legs and posterior chain got a serious workout and I can just imagine how sore I’ll be. But I’m already significantly stronger than I was just a couple of weeks ago when I shifted focus. I’m squatting heavier, deadlifting heavier, but it’s all still soooo hard.
My runs last week were all good and strong, even though I’ve cut back mileage quite a bit. Even the snowy one in which I tested out my YakTrax for the first time was good. Stay tuned for a full review.
I chipped away at holiday shopping and went on a blog excursion I’ll tell you about later this week. Just 2 more weeks and I am off to Florida!
What was fun for you this weekend? Did you race? Any parties? Close talkers? Still time to enter my giveaways here and here.
A couple things:
- Tomorrow’s Tuesdays on the Run linkup topic is Race Expos: What do you shop for? What’s the best item you ever got at one? Or are you in and out?
- Since the last Friday of this month is Christmas Day and I’ll be away on vacay, the December Runfessions Linkup will post on Friday December 18. Join us!

The guy that put in our new front lawn this spring was a very close talker. We all hated to answer the door. You back up, he takes a step forward. Yikes. That is so scary about the concealed weapon. When we were in school, our parents never had to give one thought to something like that. I always find parties like that so awkward! At least you found people you could talk to. Great job on the strength training and swimming. I just did that crazy pool running thing. I’m happy to report that I was not the weird one in the pool today. But that story deserves a whole post. I appreciate you linking with us, Marcia!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
That’s cool that you enjoyed the office party; not my favorite thing & the animals really hate it when we’re gone at night.
I did race last weekend & I did have a really fun day – I needed that!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
It’s great that you are seeing so much progress with your strength! I have definitely been getting sore from doing exercises that I have been avoiding for months.
CARLA says
SO MANY PARTIES
SO MUCH FOOD
SO MUCH FUN!!!
<3
It was HANUKKAH HEAVEN here this weekend.
Tiffany @ The Chi-Athlete says
Well that is just frightening as all getout about the student bringing a concealed weapon to school. I mean, what on earth? Looks like I gotta pray extra hard (like with my eyes shut really hard!) that this kind of thing doesn’t happen. Good grief.
So happy that your training week went well! GO PICK UP HEAVY THINGS AND PUT THEM DOWN. REPEAT.:)

I am giggling a little that you were the mystery reader and showed up on the wrong day. Sounds like something I would do. I also love finding other triathletes, cyclists, runners, swimmers at social events. Amazing how much stuff there is to chat about. Hoping there will be one or two when my husband and I go to his boss’ boss’ house for a christmas thing. What part of Florida are you visiting? I will be over by Fort Lauderdale – my first time on the Atlantic Coast – normally we are Gulfside.
Jessie says
My heavens. I’m so happy to hear everyone at your school is okay. What a scary moment!
Kristin says
That chocolate fountain looks so good! We had some great weather yesterday so I snuck out for a run. It felt AMAZING!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
omg that is terrifying. What the hell is wrong with this world? In my mind, there needs to be more chocolate fountains. Then everyone would be happy.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Ugh, the close talker. Once at work, I was talking to a dad who was a close talker. He kept getting closer and I kept backing away until I fell backwards over a garbage can. It was just like an episode of Seinfeld!
We went to dinner Sat night, and I asked my friend if we could meet at 6. Oh, am I an old lady or what?
Coco says
Oh, wow on the school mix up and the gun scare. Truly scary. LOL on having fun at the party after you found some kindred souls. Thanks for the head’s up on the early runfessions!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I work with some close talkers and it makes me so uncomfortable because I am always afraid I have coffee breath!
We were up really late on Friday night!! I even said to Paul, “hey if I stay up for 3 more hours I will have been awake for 24 hours!” I don’t stay up too late anymore so I was proud of how I rallied!
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
Wow you are already wearing the Yak trax! We are still enjoying temps in the 50’s most days. I know it won’t last much longer though. I missed my swim this week unfortunately!
Alexandra @ My Urban Family says
Oh Yum, a chocolate fountain?! I need one of those in my life more often haha
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Sounds like you had a great combination of a fun but also productive week. It always amazes me how jam packed every December is!
Lesley says
I was out late Saturday night and woke up at 7 yesterday. It is technically sleeping in for me, but not when I fell asleep after 1. Give me a break! I didn’t have anywhere to rush to in the morning, so why was I awake?
Jenn says
Aside from the gun situation, it sounds like a wonderful week. That, though, is absolutely terrifying. 🙁
It was a crazy busy week here. A few races, a few parties… And then some awesome time sitting on the couch in my pjs, watching movies and doing nothing. Love those times, too!
Marlynn @ UrbanBlissLife says
That’s so scary about the student with the concealed weapon. Awful! Glad to hear the rest of your week sounded like it went well, though.
Sharon says
You made me lol when I read about you being the mysterious reader and going in on the wrong day! :p And wow, so scary to hear about the gun at the high school. Looks like a nice holiday party! So great when we can find other runners/fitness enthusiasts in the mix!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
A concealed gun! Oh my gosh, that is so scary! I’m happy everyone is ok, but goodness! Sounds like a good week otherwise!
karen says
I have a thing about my own little box, I like boundaries lol
I skipped our work party this weekend. Honestly, parties give me anxiety lol I would enjoy it better if I could find a runner or outdoors person!
You know that strength training will have a great pay off 🙂
Michelle says
yay for all the fun and food and fitness!
Carmy says
Great workouts! Is that a chocolate fountain!? Haha, I always somehow find a runner or fitness junkie to talk to and I can avoid the awkward office small talk
Mar @ Mar on the Run says
is it wrong that all I wanted to do while reading was stick my head in that chocolate fountain? holy mother of fountains! haha, that’s funny you were the mustery reader but showed up on the wrong day. That’s something i would do! Looks like a good strong week of workouts plus some fun!

We went to a party on Saturday where I knew at least half the people and I still got cornered by some odd guy I didn’t know. Beer Geek had to rescue me! And I’m not sure I could NOT run on a lovely day…
I love the YakTrax, but I only need them a couple of times a year, so mine will last me forever.
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
that’s really scary about that student bringing a gun. sigh. glad you had a nice weekend other than that!
Karen @ Fit in France says
I had one party this past weekend, and no more until the 24th. I purposely wanted calmer weekends.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Getting the call about the gun at school must have been terrifying! I’m headed to my husband’s holiday party this Friday and won’t know a sole either…maybe I’ll get lucky and find a runner in the mix 😉
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Ok, first of all. So scary that a kid went to school with a concealed weapon. That scares me to death. I’m afraid of my kids getting old! And uggh, I hate close talkers!!
Juliana @ 4 Well Rules says
it is definitely about to be holiday season. i skipped my first one over the weekend (i was tired from a race that morning) but have a few coming up this weekend
Kim Hatting says
haha…close talkers are really awkward! I have difficulty hearing conversation in a noisy room (I actually hear EVERY conversation, so it’s hard to focus on the one happening right in front of me), and I’m tall so I have to usually lean over…close talkers get in my face and I feel like a panic attack is about to erupt. UGH. And I can relate to “talking shop” when you find a fellow runner in a crowd of strangers.#guilty
Jessica says
What a scary experience!! Im so glad everyone is safe and ok!
Natalie says
I am SO interested in the Yak Trax review! We are going to the snow soon and I don’t want to be on the treadmill for the entire time!
Don’t you love meeting runners at a party? #nonstoptalkaboutrunning
jill conyers says
The chocolate fountain. Yum! Maybe I need to get one for our annual Christmas Eve party.
Char says
I’m incredibly impressed that you could stay out till 2am. That’s the endurance athlete in you. I was up till 10:30 at a wedding the other day and that just about killed me.
Jenn's Adventures says
what a busy week!!!! glad you were able to sleep in after that laaaaate night, too! I’m pretty useless unless I’m able to sleep off a late night!!
Sharita says
Thanks for sharing your week with us! I find that fitness, especially running can make you a lot of friends in a crowd. I drop the marathon line pretty quickly and convos just open up! Congrats as well on not over-indulging. Tis the season of failed eating habits! :-p I’m bring strong with you!
Patty @ Reach Your Peak says
running weather has been perfect where I’m at but honestly have not been taking advantage. I haven’t ran more than 3 miles since chicago! and I have a 9 mile race this weekend omggggg
Sounds like a solid week of training! Do you feel like swimming helps your running/you get faster? I’m looking for something I can do in the mornings…though if I swim I’m afraid I’ll smell like chlorine at work? lol
Sandra Laflamme says
Oh my goodness. I am so relieved for you that the concealed gun thing turned out ok. So scary!!!!
Debra @HappyRunningSole says
Great week of training! Those Yak Trax look neat, but I have no need for them here in Alabama. I hate being in crowds of people I don’t know, but it’s always nice when you can find someone to you can relate with and talk to. I ran my second full marathon this past weekend. I’m hoping to recap my race before the link up this Sunday. Have a great week!

you are seriously the most consistent poster. all the envy. pretty sure i was like 16 posts behind and figured you didn’t need THAT many new comments all at once so….nice job on the turkey trot!! no fun on a short course. also glad the new meds with the thyroid seem to be helping! and lol’d that you changed your cap and swimsuit to hide from the coach. i still remember the day me and my sis got to pick out “big girl” room things- it was such a big deal!! i know thing 1 must love it. okay…off to keep reading.
