Before we get to the fun stuff, here’s how my workout week went:
Monday Rest
Tuesdayย Yoga
Wednesday Strength/core
Thursdayย 4 miles
Friday 5 miles, squeezed this one in after hearing mega snow was in the weekend forecast
Saturday 4 miles
Sunday: Strength, swim
I didn’t do much running this week and that’s ok. Other than a turkey trot, I’ve got no races scheduled for the rest of the year and I’m welcoming a shift in focus. Our fall has been so gorgeous. Just when I dared entertain the possibility of a January marathon (not this year) since it’d be so much cooler for those last long runs, this happened:
You might have heard we got a little snow. Make that a LOT of snow. We went from sunny and zero snowfall for the season to 16.5″ of the white stuff all over the place in about 18 hours. What a difference a day makes!
The roads were treacherous. I thanked my lucky stars I was not flying out to Vegas THIS week cuz I wouldn’t have made it.ย As a result, Saturday was low-key. It started with coffee by a nice fire.
Then, because I couldn’t resist, a peaceful 4 miles. I love the way snow insulates the world and all the noise is gone.
Thing 2 and I did some Thanksgiving baking. I wish there was more of the meal I could make ahead but there just isn’t. The next couple of days will be a flurry of activity though.
The really big news this week is I finally got my behind back in the pool. I really haven’t had a good “workout” swim since last August. I’ve been thinking long and hard whether I want to do more tris next year and I needed to get back in the pool to make that decision. I hate to admit this, but despite all the work I did this year, I’ve come a long way, but I haven’t overcome my fear of the water. I still fear getting tired and sinking. After Caveman and I did a nice strength workout ย (Gah! I’m going to be sore) I stared down all my suck monkeys and jumped in the pool. Honestly I expected to not know how to swim anymore and worried I’d be starting over completely. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised to find that the swim went ok. More than ok, dare I say it went WELL? Chalk it up to muscle memory but my stroke was there. My swim endurance wasn’t, but that’s ok. I can work on that. It’ll come. After my test swim, I feel like I want to take on more tris next year. Boom!
Fun this week: Tomorrow the Tuesdays on the Run Linkup topic is “Holiday Gifts for Runners”. What would you love to give or receive?
And don’t forget we’ve got a Black Friday edition of Runfessions on tap for Friday you won’t wanna miss. Link up and join us!
What was fun for you this week? Did you race? Did you get snow?
Karen @ Fit in France says
I have never run in the snow, too afraid of slipping. I look forward to linking up with you this week. Alredy started working on my posts ! Happy Thanksgiving.
Kelli says
Hey Marcia! Can’t believe how much snow you got! My parents had some but not quite that much I don’t think. So happy to hear your swim went well. Muscle memory is amazing. That’s why all these adults at masters swim (some of whom don’t look overly fit) can kick my a$$ in the pool – from years and years of swimming twice a day when they were kids. My coach is advocating more frequent but shorter sessions in the pool for improvement. I’ve noticed a little difference so far – seems easier to keep up in my lane at Masters since I bumped it from 2 to 4-5 swims per week. Good luck with Thanksgiving prep this week and thanks for the reminder on the linkups!

We had constant forecasts of snow this weekend but not a single flake. As beautiful as fresh fallen snow is I’m not complaining about the forecast being wrong. The shift in focus after a race is such a nice feeling.
Have a wonderful day Marcia!
CARLA says
You so inspire me with that SWIMMING.
You came you fear you do you conquer.
I need to follow suit.

The pictures are beautiful! It is 50 degrees this morning and I am super excited- what to wear, what to wear! I can’t imagine getting out and running down a snow covered road! The hubby is in Wisconsin and he has snow too. Glad to hear the swim session went well, your first swim fear is over and sounds like you are back! Have fun this week!
HoHo Runs says
How pretty! I would have enjoyed that quiet snowy run! I’m lucky I don’t have to do much cooking for Thanksgiving. My MIL does most of it. But, I’m always on kitchen duty! Good for you for drowning those monkeys in the pool (and not yourself). I worry about the pool until I get in, and then I’m OK. I think we are both fearing the fear and not the water. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Marcia! I appreciate you linking with us.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
Wow!!! I’m so not ready for snow. I can’t believe it came out of no where like that.
Congrats on getting back in the pool!
Bri says
Those photos are beautiful! But it looks so cold, haha! I’m definitely not a fan of cold weather… we’re supposed to get snow here tomorrow (vancouver island) and I’m dreading it.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Even though I don’t like snow, I do like running in it. Weird, I know. It sure was pretty!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Wow the snow pictures are beauuuuutiful!!!!! ๐ As much as snow annoys me because it interrupts my running schedule, I do try to soak in the beauty. What is fun is when the roads are cleared but the snow is still blanketing the houses and trees. Those are some beautiful runs.
Lesley says
I’m in charge of dessert for Thanksgiving and I made a batch yesterday. I also did a race this past weekend so I don’t have to run around and be pressed for time Thursday.
Elle says
Such beautiful pictures… almost makes me wish it would snow… ALMOST! ๐
Pete B says
Love the snow and running in it. Great pictures and I like your observation how snow insulates the world! ๐
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
I can’t believe you already have so much snow! I am loving my pool workouts right now too. Have a great week
Alexandra @ My Urban Family says
We started up a baking storm over here as well! Apparently snow means turning on the oven in my house haha
Natalie says
Gorgeous photos of the snow!! I love newly fresh fallen snow. Looks like such a cozy day with baking cookies also ๐ Kudos for getting out for 4 miles and for swimming again!
Happy Thanksgiving week!!!
Sharon says
Wow! Pretty crazy you got all that snow so fast! Looks so pretty and very peaceful! I think I will actually miss running in the snow. When I lived in NJ I ran all year even when it was snowing. Loved that it was so quiet! Way to go in the pool! I’m still hoping to learn to be a better swimmer so I can finally do a Tri!
AlexandraFunFit says
Snow snow snow snow. I want some. We have only drought drought drought.
Margo says
No snow here but we finally have true fall weather which makes me so happy!!!
Emily @ Out and About says
Way to go on getting back into the pool and feeling good!!! That’s the best feeling ever. I’m with you on having some fear of the water. It’s not a coincidence that triathlons start with the swim segment, right? So exciting to think about doing more tris next year! What ones are you potentially thinking of doing?
Char says
Your snow pic looks just so beautiful. I can see the lure of running in it. Maybe one day …
Juliana @ 4 Well Rules says
snow is so beautiful! Here in LA, it was 90 over the weekend but supposed to be more Fall later this week-in the 50s! woo-hoo haha
Carly @ Fine Fit Day says
I know I will see lots and lots of snow so soon, but in the meantime I’m content to see your gorgeous photos instead. I always say that in the fall, but the truth is I like winter running, especially in the snow. So happy you found your way back into the pool!! Yeah you!
Tricia @ MissSippiPiddlin says
Your pictures of the snow are simply stunning! I’ve ran in sleet but never with snow. Course here in MS we freak out when the weather man says flurries. We will be cooking at the in laws an it will be a house full with only one oven. Imagine how that’s gonna be. But I’m looking forward to it cause hopefully I will have my 18 miles behind me. Last night was in upper 20’s at my house. Where were going low in 60’s Yes!!! Enjoy your Thanksgiving Marcia.
Debra @HappyRunningSole says
I love your pictures of the snow! So beautiful! Kiddos to you for running in it. I don’t like cold weather and by cold I mean anything below 40 degrees. I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Wow, that snowfall looks gorgeous!! I have done a 3 mile run since Vegas and that is it!!! I really need to get one in soon though. Those cookies sure do look yummy! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!
Jenn says
That snow is incredible! No snow here, but it did go from 79 to 46, although it’s supposed to go up again. I would love to have some semblance of winter.
Becky @ Ok, so here's the plan says
Holy cow! That’s a lot of snow to get all at once! We haven’t gotten any yet, and it’s actually supposed to be in the 60s later this week. It’s coming though! I really like running in the snow, it’s peaceful, and makes me feel like a bit of a bad-ass ๐
Becki S says
Holy snow batman! And I thought I was cold here in North Carolina ๐ I need to find a turkey trot to sign the hubs and I up for, as we will be in Pittsburg. Have a great holiday!
Carmy says
Ahh! SO much snow! We had our first snow fall the other day but it’s melted right up!
Kim Hatting says
Beautiful snow pics!!!! We got 6-8 inches (??) in my area of Iowa, but a lot of it has already disappeared. We’re due for some rain (say WHAT???) on Thanksgiving, so that’ll take care of any remaining white stuff. Great job on diving back into the water ๐
