As I pack my elvis costume and round up the traveling circus to head to Las Vegas for a spectacular Rock n Roll Remix Weekend, it occurred to me that some things other runners might think of as necessary evils, I actually enjoy:
Foam rolling. I was “scared straight” by an ITB injury early on in my running career and I learned the hard way that quality time with a foam roller does a body good. Since then I’ve come to enjoy a good sesh with the roller and even keep a rumble roller on the premises for special occasions. What can I say? If the ITB is happy, everybody’s happy!
Foot care: You may begrudge your running callouses but not I. To me they are badges of honor and I don’t entrust them to just any pedi technician. I’m masterful with a pumice and have an array of cooling foot gels to pamper my feet with after a tough run. Ok this is gross, let’s move on.
Laundry: Having tons of sweaty workout stuff in the laundry makes me feel super accomplished. I love sorting it, washing it, hanging it to air dry (all over the place) then lovingly jamming it back its special drawers and closets that may require their own zip code, but that’s another post.
Thanks to Erica for turning me on to Vapor Fresh Laundry Detergent, I no longer need to pre-soak my stuff to ensure it is destinkified (it’s a word). Truth be told, the Caveman has super-sensitive skin and many detergents do not work at all for him. Vapor Fresh passed the stink test and the Caveman test with flying colors.
What’s fun for you this weekend? Is there a household chore you don’t mind doing? Have you ever run in Las Vegas?
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
That detergent would probably come in handy for my rugby playing son!
Good luck this weekend!!! And have fun!

My foam roller is collecting dust in the corner. I really need to pull it out and put it to good use. I’m sure it would help tremendously with tight calves. I haven’t gotten a pedicure in forever. I’m embarrassed for people to see my toenails. I’m like you. I have foot soaks and rubs. I’ll pamper my own feet, thank you!
Nicola @ Faster Pussycat Run Run says
I’m ashamed to say my foam roller is rather dusty. Even when I recently had a very tight calf muscle I didn’t use it. I thought about it, but just didn’t get round to using it. Perhaps I’ll add using my foam roller properly to my 2016 goals.
This weekend I’m running with my Start to Run group as they do their first ever 5k. I’m really looking forward to seeing them all cross the line. I have even baked muffins for them!

Does cooking & baking count? Seriously, if I were rich, I would have a housekeeper. It’s weird, too — I was meant to be a 50s housewife: I’m content not working & I like to cook/bake.
Of course then there’s the whole hating to clean thing & the exercise thing – so not 50s.
Have a great time! I ran Vegas once (my first), walked it once, took a running tour, have run in red rock canyon, & just run there many times.
If you make it up to fashion show mall, btw, there’s a nice little cafe called the Red Velvet Cafe I like to visit every time I go. It’s kind of hidden away in there. Have you been to Vegas before?

I’m ashamed to say I haven’t used my foam roller in AGES!! This is a great reminder that I need to get it back out ASAP!!

That laundry detergent sounds awesome! Enjoy Vegas! I got married there in 2007 – we keep meaning to go back for an anniversary trip (possibly have Elvis renew our vows?). Can’t wait to hear how the race goes!

I love my foam roller too — it hurts so good! The one chore I do religiously is keep my kitchen clean. It’s the hub of the house and can be seen from the front and back doors. The rest of the house may look like hell, but the kitchen is good. We had a tripped planned this spring to Vegas but had to scrap it. Good luck at RnR.

I can’t wait to hear out our weekend! Enjoy it! Loved the wedding pic on FB 🙂 I don’t mind laundry either!

We need Vaporfresh down under. Seriously – you should smell my son’s soccer socks! The odour is indescribable.

I have learned to enjoy foam rolling and stretching because it gives me time to catch up on my favorite TV shows while I go through my routine!
Alison @ racingtales says
I too love the foam roller but am forgetful – thanks for the gentle reminder! Love those skull capris – where can I score a pair? Hope you had a great weekend!

I learned the hard way too about the foam roller and IT band issues. I sure wish someone had made me get on when I got my very first pair of running shoes.

I know I should foam roll more!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Hmm, I may need to look into this detergent, I spend a lot of time washing funky running clothes!
I think my feet aren’t that bad with all the running I do, but I’d probably leave it to a professional if it gets really bad!
Karen says
I need to try the detergent!
Those callouses are badges of honor 🙂
I can’t wait to hear about Vegas!

Ack I should foam roll more. Thanks for the reminder! I’ve never even been to LV, so can’t wait to hear about your trip.

I love that you are your foam roller are besties! I know I need to put some more quality time in with mine, that SMR work is SO important for health and performance! I am going to have check out that laundry detergent, With my job and my sport I pretty much LIVE in workout clothing and I noticed the other day that my generic costco detergent isn’t doing as well with all my workout clothes as I had hoped!

Vegas RnR was one of my fave races! I did it 2 years ago. Looking forward to reading your full recap. Congrats!

I so want to run in Vegas … bucket list thing. Especially the night time race. How cool to see the lights!
I didnt even know there was detergent like that!

Ugh. My cranky ITB says I need to do more foam rolling. Can’t wait to hear about Vegas, baby!

I go in phases with my foam roller. Sometimes I use it all of the time and other times it just collects dust!

Yes about the laundry! Between my husband, son, and I we have more special loads of tech fabric laundry than normal laundry I think 🙂 I haven’t tried that detergent before but I saw it over on Erica’s blog too. Right now I’m using a big sample of Persil that they sent me to try and I like it. The scent is really strong and clean and it really powers through the sweat on the tech fabric.
