Before we get to the long run, here’s how the week went:
Total Miles: 33
Monday: Yoga
Tuesday: 5x1600m repeats
Wednesday: Strength & swim
Thursday:10 Miles
Friday: Strength, core, swim
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 15 miles
One more heavy training week, one almighty 20+ miler and it’s taper town! Something I am more than happy to partake of.
Hooray for a rest day kayak adventure!
So this weekend’s long run. You may know that we’ve been sweltering under a blanket of heat and humidity here in Chicago for awhile now. A cold front is expected later today, which cannot come soon enough for my taste. I’ve been doing everything in my power to be strategic with running to manage/avoid the heat.
Let’s talk about yesterday’s 15.
Time I got up: 5:15
Time I hit the road: 6:00
Temp when I started: 73
Humidity: a billion percent
Time the sun rose: 6:21
Number of gels consumed: 2. Salted watermelon and Strawberry/Kiwi (can you tell I’m clinging to summer?)
Number of bugs inhaled: 1. Thankfully it was immediately exhaled. Gross.
Number of deer spotted: 3
Number of people I know who spotted me out on my route: 1 carload
Sprinklers run through: 1
Train tracks crossed: 2
Miles run before I looped home to collapse on the floor for a minute and reload my fuel: 12
Ounces consumed during those 12 miles: 30
Ounces consumed while I laid on the floor before finishing the final 3 miles: 32. Seriously. Somebody got behind the 8-ball.
Temp when I finished all 15: 77
Trays of ice in the ice bath: 4. And man they felt good!
I was very grateful this was a cutback week cuz I’m not sure I could’ve handled any more than 15. Blech!
Looking forward to this week: Labor Day fun today in Lake Geneva, a short school week, and a blog field trip I can’t wait to tell you about!

It is still so hot and humid here as well! Don’t know how all of you marathon training runners are doing it. I am so done after 5 miles. Hope you have a great week!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I’m so over our weather! Altho yesterday, I read my marathon training posts from last year and we were experiencing the very same conditions! Is this what our summers have come too? Extreme weather? Ugh…
Have fun in Lake Geneva! I hope the weather cooperates.
Kelli says
Way to get it done. I love the by the numbers (and I hate inhaling bugs – mountain biking is the worst for that). I’m hoping this late summer humidity comes to an end soon. It looks like we have a few more days in the 90s here before it cools off. Enjoy Lake Geneva!
misszippy1 says
Seriously–can the humidity just go away now? We are going to have another week of 90 degree days/high humidity. It’s my final big week of mileage and it would have been nice to have cooler temps. I guess lesson learned on an early Oct marathon, right?
Enjoy your long weekend!

The best things about a 3 day weekend (other than the extra day off) is a short work week ๐ Visiting Taper Town scares me LOL It’s hard to not run or run very little.
Becky @ Ok, so here's the plan says
The humidity has been terrible this year! We have some temps in the 90s coming up this week, and I am not ok with it.
I would never finish my run if I stopped at my house. I would just be like, ok that’s enough, I’m already home ๐
Heather says
It has been miserable here in Memphis as well, but I would rather be hot than cold. You are such an inspiration, I am also a late starter with running, but I love it. Have a great Labor Day

Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says
Yep, hot and humid here too. Though the humidity is probably less and the heat more than in Chicago. Good job on getting it done though. And the words “cold front” sound pretty delicious right now, don’t they?
Coco says
Hah! I measure my ice baths by the bag – I think 20 lbs is what I need. Taper town is in sight!!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Congrats on your long run! ๐
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Have I mentioned just how over this humidity I am?!? You’re doing great with your training and the end is in sight! Enjoy the lake today!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
I can’t believe how humid it has been, even this late in the summer! We finally got a little break in the humidity yesterday and today but I think it will be back this week. Amazing job with your long run in those temps! And I give you alot of credit for being able to get off your floor and finish those last 3 miles:)
Alexandra @ My Urban Family says
Hope you’re having a good time! I cannot even imagine running that far in this kind of weather we’ve been having!
Char says
I don’t know how you do it. If I went home that far into a run, I don’t think I’d be leaving. Especially a run which was so hot and horrible and involved eating bugs.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Hmmm. Fun. Nothing terribly fun this weekend. Nothing terrible, either, so I guess there’s that.
I was very happy to finish 9 miles saturday & not have to run another step!
Great way to get it done!
Carmy says
I got tired just reading 5x1600m! Track work outs hurt!
MCM Mama Runs says
I have to do 16 here tomorrow in temps very much like yours. I am not looking forward to it at all and have a feeling I’ll be refilling my bottle regularly at my car. Ugh.
Natalie says
It is so hot here too!! I am settling in – it won’t cool down significantly until November. Ahh, such as life ๐
Way to kick butt on the marathon training!! 5 x 1600 is fierce!! 15 miles in the heat is true dedication
Wishing you a great, hard week until your taper Marcia! ๐
Thanks so much for the Women’s Running Magazine code! That is quite a deal and I don’t have a subscription for that magazine.
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
I’m totally loving the way you are doing your recaps ๐ The heat and humidity have been no joke. I’m actually a little afraid that I’ve been doing most of my runs in a climate controlled environment. Makes me nervous for my actual race day and the elements that I haven’t acclimated to. It will be the end of October, so hopefully cooler temps, but still. Way to get that long run done, and YEY for taper time!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I’m cracking up reading your 15 miler stats. The number of bugs inhaled. Hilarious!
Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC says
love your stats – this humidity has been killer the past week. i’m ready for fall weather!
Sharon says
Love the stats! Way to get that 15 miler done!
Priya says
What you are achieving is truly amazing. And to run in humidity is no childs play.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Oak Brook was brutal. I was a mess when I finished – physically and mentally. It took me 3 bottles of water, some SOS Rehydrate, a ton of ice and a few hours to feel normal. Oy. Plus – HILLS. I am in trouble for NYC. Need to get out to Waterfall Glen or Barrington – STAT.
Mary Beth Jackson says
My long run this weekend was 9 miles and that is long enough! I am with you- humidity= one billion percent!!!!!I used your code to order some spandits I am patiently waiting on the mailman!!!! sort of ๐ Great week of miles for you! This is my taper week- smiles!!!!!!!!
Michelle says
Still no long runs for me, but am enjoying starting back slowly! Can’t wait to hear about how you ROCK your marathon! And I agree, I am so over this humidity!!!! LOL
HoHo Runs says
You are a week ahead of me in your training. This is my cut back week. I did 21 in Sunday’s heat…blech is right. One more long run and I’ll be in taper town too. (PS. I missed you on the link!)
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
I’m so ready for this summer and it’s heat and humidity to be over and done with! I will do my very best NOT to whine about the cold weather, very best I say! Great week of training for you! I did have a great race on Sunday, recap to come and then spent the rest of the weekend and Labor Day with my husband in Memphis! ๐ Thank you for linking up with us this week!
