Can you believe May is just about finito and it’s time for another edition of Runfessions? Today, and the last Friday of every month, we purge our dirty little run- gym- and swimfessions and share them here. Join us and link em up below. I promise you’ll feel better! Let’s get to it:
My tri is in two weeks and my bike hasn’t been tuned up…..ever.
I don’t know how to change a bike tire. And I own zero tubes.
I was rummaging around deep in the bowels (ok that sounds gross) of one of my “sports drawers” and I found a sports bra that was in the rotation during the Clinton Administration.
Typically Oreos hold no allure for me. But oh my the mini ones we had along on our roadtrip were irresistible. Probably because mini things have negative calories. At least in wishful thinking land they do.
My tri coach advised me to cut my fingernails or risk tearing my new wetsuit. Color me shallow but I think I’d rather tear my wetsuit.
Remember back in January I told you they were calling me “Ann” at the gym check-in desk? Because it turned out I had “Ann’s” card? Well I recently went back to wearing my Fitbit and it said “Hi Marilyn”. I mean seriously. Who the he!! is Marilyn and why do I have her Fitbit??
I saved the one I’m most ashamed of for last. I am prepared to do hard penance for this:
Thing 1 had a stellar track season, for which I am so proud of her. Track season transitions directly into ice show and competition season. Alas over the holiday weekend, she sprained her ankle pretty badly, which makes it impossible for her to skate and just like that, the ice show is up in smoke. I feel horrible for her and know how disappointed she it. But there’s a small ok medium part of me that’s the tiniest bit relieved, because no ice show rehearsals free up HUGE chunks of time and I don’t have to tell you what a crazy month May is with the end of school ,graduation and everything else. This dark cloud definitely had a bit of a silver lining.
Ok your turn! Spill your runfessions and link em up or tell us in a comment. Don’t forget about my giveaways here and here.ย

This was a good read. Love Runfessions! Have fun in your upcoming tri….
Here is my Runfession if you’re interested in reading……

And yes I highly recommend cutting your finger and toe nails!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Oh I so get that free time thing….that sense of guilty relief…
You do have really nice nails.
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Terrible mother, you are. NOT. I have no doubt that my parents were more than happy when certain things petered out for me–less running around. That does suck that she is hurt, though. Because now you might have to cater to her every need. Or just take her for froyo.
And Flo Jo nails….. woof.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Stinks for Thing 1, but maybe a season off will be nice for everyone! I occasionally feel that relief when I can’t do a race or when The Husband’s car keeps him from a long time away racing. It doesn’t make you a bad mom, it make you HUMAN.
Um, please get your bike tuned up by a professional before that tri and go to a tire changing clinic. The Husband taught me but I still don’t know how exactly. (Otherwise, play damsel in distress – but carry a tube and kit with you – that is pretty much what I do!)
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
So I don’t know how to change a bike tire either! I figure someone will ride by and take pity on me ๐ Shameless I know. My tri is the Sunday!!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Poor Thing 1 – but I so get the desire for a little more free time. May has been a zoo! I cannot even begin to explain the Marilyn Fitbit thing…are you leading a double life ๐
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
I totally get the free time thing!!! Don’t feel guilty! I need to link up to this next month! Have a great weekend!
Andrea says
I remember when my daughters softball team didn’t advance. Big relief I kept to myself.
I slept through 3 alarms this morning and ignored the call to go run even though I can’t later.
elizabeth says
always love these. i got nada. i can’t even finish my marathon race report. my mind is mush.
HoHo Runs says
I am always chuckling after reading one of your posts. Shouldn’t everyone run with blue claws? Please, please turn your bike up and have someone take a picture. PLEASE. Oh, and please Marilyn, be my Fitbit friend. Thanks for hosting Runfessions. It’s a huge favorite!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
Mini oreos = heaven on earth haha.
Let’s see runfessions – I’ve barely run in a month, but I’m racing a 10k tomorrow… I’m nervous I don’t have the endurance anymore… definitely no longer have the speed – eek!
Rachelle Q says
I just bring my bike in to the bike shop to have them tune it up for me:) Honestly whenever I see women with nails like that, the 1st thing that comes to mind is how do they wipe?;)
Karen says
Time is so precious – I get it!
Seriously, when someone calls you Marcia you may forget to answer ๐
Emily @ Out and About says
I am amazed to hear that long fingernails are a tear risk for wetsuits. I’m no wetsuit expert, but I feel like wetsuits are much more durable than that! The picture of those long blue fingernails makes me shudder.
“Marilyn”??? Yikes! How do these mix-ups happen!?!?!?
I totally understand what a relief it was to have some time freed up in your schedule. The introvert in me is secretly happy when a friend cancels plans with me. Down time is huge when the calendar is packed!!!
Elle says
I love this month’s edition… I look forward to this post every month – you are such a great story teller!
Char says
You don’t have to feel guilty about reclaiming a little time. You would have done all those rehearsals willingly because you’re an amazing Mum but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy the little bit of freed up space in your calendar.
Mary Beth Jackson says
OMG! I am eating lunch and just choked on my salad Ann, I mean Marilyn, who are you these days?? LOL!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Its always interesting when you discover things that you bought long ago, and it makes you wonder if you’d had it for so long and not used it why you purchased it in the first place.
Artney @ My Pretty Brown says
LOL @ your Fitbit! I love it! Well at least you’re back! These past two months have been a zoo for me too. Enjoy whatever free time you can get!
misszippy1 says
Your last one–so relatable! I’m sorry she is hurt, though. But totally get it.
Wetsuits can be tidied up with a little super glue, never fear! And I might have things in my sock/underwear drawers going back to Bush 1. That’s sad.
Hollie says
I’m glad I found your blog! This is hilarious.
I’ve been cleaning out the closet a lot lately as well. I’ve found myself finding things that were probably in my first collection of running stuff ever.
Carilyn Johnson (@CarilynJohnson) says
Love this, Marcia! So great! My runfession is that Hubz keeps getting me “running” dogs but I only half-heartedly try to teach them to run with me. I find running with a dog frustrating. I like to zone out and use my running as a meditation or as a social occasion with my friends. I love to walk my dogs, but running them is not my thing.
Kerri Olkjer says
What a fun link-up! Not sure how I’ve missed it.
Kelli says
Love this. I keep my fingernails way short out of convenience (it also helps with wetsuit but I just don’t like dealing with them in general). I’ll avoid the tire changing lecture – it’s really empowering to learn how and not as hard as it seems!
Jill says
LOUISE!! Please tell them your name is LOUISE for heaven’s sake!
Lindsay @ Fit & Awesome says
Bwahahaha on the triathlon wetsuit ripping. Your coach is right though. I keep my nails pretty short and I’ve still managed to get a gash into them. Gah!
Coco says
Oh, your poor daughter! I just sprained my foot hiking last weekend and I am bummed. But, I know what you mean about freeing up time.
Annmarie says
I was literally cracking up laughing reading this the entire time (except about your daughter’s injury, sorry to hear!) but otherwise this was quite entertaining. Hope you have a great weekend <3
Toni says
Great post! Very funny except your daughters injury, hope she recovers quickly!
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
This was a really fun read! Hope you don’t tear your wet suit. ๐
Mary @ Fit and Fed says
Oh my gosh, poor Thing 1! Almost the same thing happened to me when I was 16! After working hard over the summer so I could do a good job trying out for the community ice show, I sprained my ankle at the end of the summer and was not able to skate at all. Unfortunately it was the end of skating for me at that time of my life. By the time my ankle healed, my family decided that skating was too expensive :(. I hope your daughter has a much happier outcome than that.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I desperately need to clean out my running clothes drawer!
Thanks for the linkup!
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
We had to cut our fingernails for rugby and they even did checks. I hated that mine were super short for years.
Safari @ Tri-ing To Run Boston says
lol…these were hilarious!!! I’m right there with you on the bike…I don’t own a spare tube and even if I did I would still have to flag someone down to change it. Oh and I completely understand the last one…our kids’ schedules take up so much of our time. I was SOOO glad when my daughter’s decided NOT to run track this year…practice on Tues/Thursday and mets on Saturdays…ALL day?!!?? Whew…yeah…done with THAT! lol
Oh and I so just cut my nails for the same reason your coach suggested. lol
Laura@ Fit Running Mama says
So sorry about Thing 1 but there is the silver lining like you said!!
Sam @ PancakeWarriors says
Oh my gosh your poor daughter!! I hope that she is feeling better and can find something new to look forward to! I bet you are relived though!! So funny about the nails! Good luck
