I’m linking up again for a coffee date with Coco, Lynda and Deborah. I’m double fisting coffee and Zip-Fizz. Let’s get to it, shall we?
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’m feeling wistful. There was another plagiarism scandal in the blogosphere yesterday. That kind of crap makes me sad. Yes it’s nice that blogs are recognized more and more as valuable vehicles for promoting brands, but with the addition of money in the mix, things have changed. In the ‘old days’ (2009) when I started blogging, I did it simply to log my training for Boston. Now too many bloggers crawl over each other clawing and scratching for page views. Apparently now some of us have stooped so low as to steal the content of others.
I told you I had content scraped. I also had watermarked pics of my kids stolen and posted on a sicko child porn site. Most recently a national running magazine that shall remain nameless (rhymes with sunners curled) just coincidentally publish a gently massaged article eerily similar to one I’d posted just a day earlier and shared on Twitter, tagging them in hopes of a retweet. One word in the headline was changed when it showed up on their website, so I guess it wasn’t total plagiarism. Sigh. After awhile I can’t help but wonder if it’s time to go write somewhere else.
Enough sour stuff. On a positive note:
If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I’m chomping at the bit for spring break. We’re headed for the Caribbean where I hope to thaw these frozen bones. I also hope to test the waters with my first open water swim. In. The. Ocean. Color me terrified.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’m a serious contender for Mother of the Year. We booked our spring break vacay long before the school calendar was released. I so very stupidly assumed spring break would be the same week in March it was last year. Yeah not so much. So the kids will miss a week of school while we’re in the Caribbean and have another week at home while the rest of the school is on spring break. Whoops!
If we were having coffee, what would you tell me? Any spring break plans? Did you enter my giveaway?
Glenneth says
no spring break for me, but i hope you enjoy yours. sounds amazing! stopping by from the ultimate coffee date.
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
We just got back from a caribbean cruise too. It does wonders esp after this winter. I had thoughts of swimming in the ocean but kind of chickened out and just waded around. Have an awesome time. Sometimes family time is more important than school-don’t stress it! Thanks for linking up today. Always a fun way to catch up
Laura@ Fit Running Mama says
SOOO jealous of your spring break but hello 50 degrees next week!! I am so EXCITED!!! So done with being stuck inside with a newborn in freezing temps!! Happy Sunny Saturday 🙂 Enjoy your run- I got on the mill and lifted this morning… Saturday morning goal is MET 🙂
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Ugh a big boo on your content being stolen – just so frustrating! I am way jealous of your cruise plans so I will live vicariously through you – which ports are you hitting?
Amy @ Mama Running for God says
So sorry about the plagiarism issues, so sad. How fun about your upcoming trip! I’ve never been outside of the US. Enjoy the sunshine and just relax!
Mary Beth Jackson says
OMG! You are just going to throw yourself out there and start swimming the ocean? YIKES, I am scared too! HA HA on the spring break- who comes up with the school schedule anyway? Oh well now they will have plenty of time to make up what they missed! The plagiarism thing sucks 🙁 Have a great weekend!
Coco says
LOL on the double spring break! Did you contact the publisher? That sounds like a serious infraction and changing one word of the title doesn’t save them. I’ve noticed they push out a lot of content these days, sad to know they aren’t creating it or paying for it themselves.
Melanie Serauskis says
Don’t you hate it when schools change their calendars?? Our spring break changes every year lol! and that stinks about runners wo, whoops I mean that magazine! Be flattered, it must have been a great piece!
HoHo Runs says
Yet another reason to not read Sunners Curled. I sorta did the same thing with winter vacation recently. Oops – I thought school started back on a different day. Enjoy that cruise!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Seriously? They stole your content? Did you call them out on it? That’s pretty poor form for a national magazine.
BTW, I’m sure your kids think you are mother of the year! Missing a week of school and then having spring break? Sounds pretty awesome to me!
Kim says
You rock as a mom – 2 weeks vacation is awesome!!!
Horrible about your article being taken – sorry!!!
Tina G says
Man..if we were having coffee…first thing i would say is …do you take Baileys? Of course we would have run first…then I would suss out what you love to eat…I have a great place to take you i VAN! Then I would ind out what is gonna go down in Vegas! haha
Annmarie says
Ugh…all of this plagiarism makes me sad and really disappointed. I just don’t understand it, what is the point of blogging and writing if you can’t create your own content?!
I am so sorry that happened to you and that your kids pictures were posted on a porn site? WHAT? That is sincerely upsetting!!!! Hope it was all taken care of and the perps were caught!
Yay for Spring break and a warm vaca…hope you enjoy!
Lindsay says
blogging sure has changed. I mostly wonder how I ever had to much TIME to write! /creative energy to write. I miss it a little bit everytime I try to its hard and just different. I hate youvr had extra trouble with it!
I’m sure the kids won’t mind missing extra school and clear blue water is much easier to jump into than murky open water!
Farrah says
I’m so sorry that you’ve had to deal with so much negativity in the blogging world! That’s horrible. :[ I hope those sickos got caught.
I hope you have a lot of fun on your vacation though! Eat lots of good food and soak up lots of warm sun! <3
Alison @ racingtales says
Ha ha, Spring break goof sounds like something I would do! After I planned our trip to return the Sunday before school starts, I discovered the kids have the Monday off anyway…huh.
I don’t understand why some people blog. I realize some people are doing it for a living, but when someone feels the need to steal someone else’s content, it suggests to me that blogging isn’t something they should be doing. The whole point is to talk about your own experiences – how can you do that if you steal someone else’s?
Amanda @ fridaylovesong.net says
Woah, that’s insane about your content… that irks me to no end! Crazy.
Annnd I think your kids will forgive you about the Spring Break mixup 😉 Yeah, I’d forgive you. he.
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
Oh my gosh. I had no idea Runner’s World did that to you. That is shady!
I have never even thought about taking blog stuff from other people ad making it my own. I guess I just do this for fun and have a good time with it and love the support network it brings me. I feel like stealing and cheating takes all the awesome support I love away from blogging.
Char says
I bet the kids are loving your timing error. There is nothing better than going on holidays knowing that all your friends are stuck in school while you’re away. You deserve a special Mother’s Day gift this year.
CARLA says
hmmm shady and disappointing.
VERY VERY VERY.
Kovas - Midwest Multisport Life says
Strange about RW – even if they gave credit as they should wouldn’t affect their readership numbers. ???
Should have made the cruise 2 weeks.
kilax says
I think that is awesome they get an extra long spring break. I bet they think so too!
elizabeth says
omg thanks for the compression socks and cheese tips on previous post. both are right up my alley. can’t believe that about RW!?!? sad. if we were having coffee i would tell you that i’m stressed to the max because i’m too type A, a perfectionist, and want everything done NOW.
