We kicked off the weekend taking Thing 2 to “Movie Night” at her school on Friday night. I went fully expecting to watch the movie with her but was informed at the door it was a drop-off affair. Score! So drop off I did. I adore my kids but an unexpected pocket of free time on a Friday night was a treat.
I got out for a 10-miler (in near-tropic low-20’s temps no less) on Saturday. That’s the longest I’ve run since the New York City Marathon back in November. Yikes those final miles felt hard.
Making mile 5 hill repeats may have had something to do with that. Running is hard. I tend to take it for granted when I’m in good endurance running shape, which, I am not right now.
After my Sunday morning coffee and newspaper ritual, the Caveman and I headed to the gym for strength and swim. Of the fitness activities I’m doing right now, strength is my shining star. My body felt tired and beat up from Saturday’s 10. Lots of hip and lower back tightness. Funny how I don’t notice these things as much or at all when I’m in the habit of higher miles.
As much as I love strength training, that’s how much I loathe swimming. I’m swimming (if you can call it that) 2 or 3x/week but the progress is slow and there’s zero enjoyment. None. Today I had to take a lane in the cold, long pool. As I stood there at the foot of the lane putting down my stuff a lady took it upon herself to just hop in and steal my lane. What? Did she expect me to share?? There was another lane open so I went there but jeez. I also found out I need to swim a half mile at my tri. Some sprint tris require only a quarter mile swim but noooooo, not mine. So the word of the day was overwhelmed. There may have been crying in the pool. And words about quitting may have been uttered. Then the Caveman talked me out of my tree and I regrouped. I still have 3+ months to figure this out.
Weightloss. If you recall, last week I ate ONLY Diet-To-Go meals from the 1600 calorie, low-carb plan. There were a couple of instances where I added an apple, but overall I stuck to the plan. As I mentioned before, I was never starving and the meals are very delicious and not in the least bit diet-like. What I struggled with were my habits of wanting something sweet at certain times of day. The sugar cravings have faded significantly and it is my goal to stay sugar and junk free this week as well, although I’m on my own food-wise. For the week I am down 2.3 lbs! Remember if you want to try Diet-To-Go for yourself, use code DTGA127 to save 25% off your first order.
This Friday and the last Friday of every month is Runfession Friday! Be sure to join us and linkup your run- swim- and gymfessions, heck all confessions are welcome. Trust me you’ll feel better!
I’m linking up today with Tara’s Weekend Update.
What was fun for you this weekend? Did you race? Enjoy good weather? Watch the Oscars?
Alison @ racingtales says
Way to go on the long run! I’m feeling the same way – longest run of late is around 7 miles and it felt like a really long way! Still, better than the 0 miles I was running just a few months ago. Swim etiquette clearly lost on that woman! Usually I throw my mesh swim bag and water bottle down in the spot I am about to take, but that certainly wouldn’t stop someone from taking my lane if they wanted to. Weirdest thing that happened to me was when swimming in a near empty pool, a guy jumps in to share the lane with me. I’m fine sharing when the pool is busy, but there were empty lanes! I decided not to fuss and just moved myself. The swim will get easier, trust me! Today I was doing my thing and a woman joined my lane (busy day at the pool so that was cool). When I stopped for a break she said she was enjoying watching my great form! Turned out she was new to swimming. I cautioned her not to watch me as I have terrible form. Still, it was so nice to hear that, as I started at 0 just 5 years ago. Eventually it will all come together and you will be so proud of what you’ve accomplished! Is the swim in your tri open water or pool? Unusual for a pool swim to be 800m, but normal for open water swim to be that distance in a sprint.
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
I got out to enjoy some runs.
It was 20 here Friday.
60-70 this weekend.
And will be back to 30/40 on Tuesday.
Crazy weather.

You can do the swim!!!
The most fun part of our weekend was going to the high school musical performance of Spamalot Saturday night! The cast was incredible and the pit orchestra (Jordan played trumpet in it) was awesome! Plus it was super entertaining!

I’m sure you’re better off with your swimming than you think! You’ve been incredibly dedicated to it–stick it out.
How fun to get a bonus kid-free evening! I had that Sat. night when both of mine ended up at friends’ houses. I used it to go to bed early–party animal that I am!
Annmarie says
It warmed up here to the high 20’s on Sunday but unfortunately had run my 15 miler on the treadmill the day before. I did get outside for a bit and I’m not going to lie, it felt rather tropical!
Mary Beth Jackson says
yes we had great weather and yes I got my first TWO runs in since my recovery period – I am sore, sore , sore! This is like starting over! Yikes! Headed to yoga Tuesday night and I can’t wait! I can see you standing by the side of the pool- I am impressed you are hanging with it! Good girl!
Kovas - Midwest Multisport Life says
I actually had a good day of ski patrol on Saturday, great snow for this area.
MCM Mama Runs says
I’m so impressed that you swim at all. I can’t deal with a cold pool. And I don’t like to get my face wet. Yes, that would be why I’ll never do a tri LOL. Good for you for getting it all done.
I’m struggling with my running now that I’m past the half marathon distance. My body just doesn’t want to get on board with the increased distance and the weather is not helping. Running outside in single digits for 3 hours is really low on my enjoyment list.
Keep up the great work!
Maureen says
I bet that swim sounds scary, but once you do it, you will feel AMAZING!!!! I also tend to like certain foods {hello sweets} at certain times of the day and am trying hard to break that habit!

Love the cat pic! We PVRd the Oscars so we could zip through most of the speeeches. Love Viola Davis’s gown!
Ange @ Cowgirl Runs says
I don’t remember the last time I had a long run! The weather has been decent, but I just haven’t had the motivation to get out there.
Good for you for swimming even when you weren’t feeling awesome about it.
heather @ divas run for bling says
I stayed in a bit this weekend with a combo of a sinus thing and bad weather. I was able to get out long enough to do a couple of miles yesterday though. Great week!
HoHo Runs says
The cat swimming pic is priceless. That would be me. Way to go on the weight loss! That sounds like a good program. I raced – it rained. No Oscars. I saw zero of the nominated movies.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
I hear you on the lack of love for swimming. Even when I’m on vacation, I’ll sit by the water, but I’m a.ok with not going in it!
Char says
My kids are so much older than yours but I still love getting ‘child-free’ evenings. They’re still as rare as hen’s teeth. We may have to think about changing the locks to get them to leave.
Margo says
OMG the picture of that cat is hilarious! Good for you for getting out there. I am too wimpy to go outside to workout. My bike is collecting dust!
Tara @ Running 'N' Reading says
Wow! Way to go with that long run, Marcia; those hill repeats are a bear and you killed it. I would imagine you certainly were feeling it the next day; not sure I would have had the discipline to hit the gym – ha! I’m so glad you enjoyed your Diet-to-Go meals; cutting out sugar has been my focus lately, as well, and it has definitely been interesting to notice those pesky sugar cravings. Good grief! You’re doing great; keep up the good work. Thanks so much for linking up with the blog today; hope your week is off to a great start!

It does sound like you had a productive weekend … and good for you getting those 10 miles in! I have similar thoughts on swim, I actually enjoy it for a swim or two, and then I start loathing it. Mostly because of the high “female maintenance” required, haha 😉
Kate @KateMovingForward says
Swimming is scary for me! And exhausting. I’d like to do a triathalon but the swimming part holds me back!
AJ @ NutriFitMama says
I got in some indoor workouts this week, but sadly it was way too icy out to get in a good long run outdoors this weekend. I am looking forward to this week though- as long as the ice is gone I guess I will attempt to deal with the cold…yikes lol!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
We had terrible weather this weekend with a snowstorm Saturday followed by an ice storm Sunday. Made for fun time around here. Great that you got outside for your 10 miles, much braver than I am with the cold temps 🙂
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I’m glad to hear you ‘fess up about your love for swimming…. I sure couldn’t do it. Looking forward to hearing more on runfessions. Looks like I need to come up with some stuff…
Patty @ Reach Your Peak says
I really want to do a mini triathlon but the swimming portion is what makes me nervous! I really can’t even swim from one side to the other. I need to stop and take a break after just that! I get sweet cravings every day too ugh. Mainly after my lunch and dinner. I do want to try doing a sugar detox because I feel like I really need it. My sweet tooth has been out of control!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Congrats on a successful week of workouts, eating, and weight loss. I always find it difficult to stay on track in the Winter, but you did so well this past week. Hopefully this next week goes just as well!
jill conyers says
Horrible weather for the midwest and I didn’t watch the Oscars. BTW, did Jennifer Aniston win? I’d be surprised if she did but maybe.
I wish I could swim well enough to consider it a workout.
Have a terrific Tuesday!
Carla says
I admire your commitment to keep going with the swimming even though you don’t really like it. I’d have dropped it by now. 🙂
That’s a significant weight loss, especially given that you’re so fit.
RFC says
Oh man, my lack of love for swimming is why I finally gave up on the idea of an Ironman. I just can’t make myself even enjoy it, no matter how much I try! Good for you for keeping up with it!
Stephanie @fitmomtraining says
It was so cold here on the weekend that they canceled a half marathon.
Score for unexpected kid drop off!

i know you love when i finally play catch up a week behind 🙂 last weekend Rich moved in! I’m learning to share. So that’s that.
