I’m linking up again for a coffee date with Coco, Lynda and Deborah. I’ve got some Starbucks house blend all brewed and ready to go so let’s get to it, shall we?
I’m entertaining the thought of a fall marathon. I know this was supposed to be the year of the tri and RocknRoll fun, but friends don’t let friends run Twin Cities alone. What’s holding me back is the thought of marathon training during the 3 weeks we’ll be in Europe. Will I train? I might, but probably nowhere near as thoroughly as I would if I were home.
We were at the high school last night with Thing 1 as she met with her advisor to make course selections for freshman year. It’s still so surreal for me. It struck me how big of a deal the whole ‘going to high school’ thing is. This was not the case when I was a kid. Maybe because I have 5 siblings. We just went. I don’t even remember course selection hoopla. Is this a new thing? Is it typical everywhere?
Not so fast–I still have a 3rd grader! Valentine’s Day is approaching. That means it’s time for the class Valentine’s Day party and card exchange. I thought Thing 2 would be all over picking out her Valentines….um, not so much. “I don’t care, just get anything. But not cartoon characters” she told me. Well alrighty then. Sounds like she’s over Valentine’s Day already. High School, anyone?
Workouts have been going well, but then I’ll have a day where I’m just SO tired. The highlight of this week was an indoor track pace ladder that I was quite positive was beyond my current fitness abilities. Not so. I rocked that sucker. But oh the next day? So hard to even move!
The pool? Well something so shameful happened this week, I’m not sure I can spit it out. I think I’ll save it for the next Swim- Gym- Runfession Friday linkup on February 27. Put it on your calendar and join us!
What would you tell me over coffee?

Friends don’t let friends run Chicago alone. Say you’ll run with me…and Sara…

I am with you Marcia- I don’t remember this whole high school course selection being such a big thing. I mean my mom never went. I just took the courses that the counselor told me, no you can’t take home ec, take another biology, your future husband will appreciate a paycheck not a casserole was what I was told. Yup, turned out just fine and I went to the University of Florida! Good luck!
Kovas - Midwest Multisport Life says
Of course you’ll train in Europe, what else would you do, be a tourist and eat?
Carla says
High school does seem to be a bigger deal now. My kids all had some sort of event that they had to go to. But then it happened every year and not just Freshman year so by the time Lucas started high school it was like eh.
I think 3rd grade was my favorite year for valentines! But too each her own. Better for Thing 2 to be independent than seeking for attention/love from others.

I have a HS 9th grader and a senior. We filled out housing apps for college last night! Talk about surreal-yikes! Thanks so much for linking up with us for the coffee date and hope we see you more often!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I got the same instructions from my 3rd grader on which Valentine’s Day cards to buy/not buy – I think he’d rather pass on the whole thing too! Can’t believe you’re doing the whole HS course thing already – I’m barely surviving life with a middle schooler 🙂
Farrah says
Aww, it does sound like it’d be fun to run with your friends though! Having awesome company is great! 😀
I went to a high school full of overachievers, so the whole course selection in high school pretty much prepared me to be a master at it in college! 😛

Oh my gosh – can’t wait to read the pool story. I’ve got my own freshman – the picking of the classes was stressful.
Lynda@fitnessmomwinecountry says
Oh high school.. Yep already had one finish and graduate {he is 23 now} and our middle child is a Freshman now. We just got done doing his sophomore schedule last week. I just sit back and think wow. I miss the elementary school valentine day parties and goodies so much. Our daughter is in 7th grade and they don’t do anything there.
Jenny @ TurtleStride says
IT’ll be so fun to get a run in early in the morning as the towns are waking up during your travels, if you chose to train while abroad! I don’t remember high school being that big of a deal but where I grew up there was only one middle school and one high school for the entire town, so maybe that’s why.
MCM Mama says
Friends definitely don’t let friends run by themselves. LOL. We need to figure out an RNR we can both run!
And I have a 7th grader and 3rd grader – so not ready for high school…

Um…how cool will it be to get up and “train” everyday somewhere in EUROPE?? Um, super cool.
Tara just texted me today and was hesitant pulling the trigger. Come on, girls – LET’S RUN TWIN CITIES!! Price goes up on Tuesday, just sayin’!!

i actually loved marathon training when i was in europe- it was a great way to sightsee and learn my way around the city. and i’m also so type A i hate skipping assigned workouts. What would I tell you this week? I hate wedding planning, I would rather elope but my family might disown me. I would love a week off of work to play catch up in my personal life- i have about 20 magazines to read, 3-4 blog posts to write, and 2 closets to clean out.
Coco says
I love that Valentine – so corny, but I love corny! I think everything is more a big deal with kids these days – the pressure to do everything “right” starts early and keeps building. It’s hard to keep perspective, but important not to give in to all of the hype.
Kim says
We just did our 2nd round of the high school pre-enroll stuff. I’m like you, when I went to high school I just went.
I can’t wait to hear your pool story!!!
Char says
My youngest had to make course selections too going into high school. My eldest two had just been given their courses – no selection required. Made me wonder why they had to start making decisions so young. Thirteen year olds don’t always know what they want to do when they grow up.
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
I don’t remember selecting courses being a big thing at all! I think schools have changed so much in the last 20 years! You have me curious about the pool!!
Lisa says
High school course selection actually is a big deal. Starting to lay out a plan for life.
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
I feel like I was just told these are the 6 classes you have to take – no would you like to choose band, art, theater, or choir for your arts class. That was it.
Alison @ racingtales says
Ooh how could you leave me hanging with that tidbit about the pool? I have been wondering how your swim training has been going, and now you mention an incident but leave that cliffhanger!?!
High School is another year away for my oldest, but we had course selections recently for 8th grade and that was hard enough, so I can’t imagine trying to select High School classes!
I say go for the marathon – training in Europe will be awesome, weather will be good and lots of new places to discover!
Travel Spot says
I actually remember HS classes being a big deal; however, I don’t think it would have been the end of the world if I didn’t get one I wanted. I think it was more about getting into the same classes as your friends. Of course, that was a loooong time ago!
kilax says
This reminds me, I wanted to say “Woot woot” that you signed up for TCM!
It seems like HS is a WAY bigger deal now. But… what isn’t?!
