Yesterday was the 2nd installment of my Turkey Trot trifecta. An 8k this time, right here in town. You know, the race I complained about the other day because it’s gotten too large and too pricey.
The day dawned cold and clear: low 20’s. Better than last year’s 9 degrees. I got there an hour+ in advance to score prime parking. I was excited to be trotting with Wendy and Sara! This was the first time I met Sara, although we’ve been cavorting on Facebook for awhile now. We all gabbed and stayed warm in the car until go time.
My goal for this race was to run easy, since turkey trot 3.0 is on Saturday. No faster than 9 minute miles.
We went off in waves this year. With 3,000 runners, this was the right thing to do. As usual, people were very poorly lined up, resulting in tons of stopping and weaving. But it’s Thanksgiving. I’ll stop being the race warden now. We tromped through town then out to a residential area via a dirt path. It was pretty tight running all the way to the point when the 5kers broke off from the 8k.
I did a decent job of sticking to my goal pace and felt relaxed and effortless:
Mile 1: 9:02
Mile 2: 8:43
Mile 3: 9:08
Mile 4: 9:05
Mile 5: 9:10
It was total gridlock when the 8k rejoined the 5k for the last mile or so, but whatevs. It was fun and festive and freezing!
Finish time: 45:18, AG7/27.
Finish snacks were nothing special: cookies, granola bars, fruit snacks, protein bars. The “fleece” half zip race shirt was cute. Love the red zipper but fabric is on the cheap side. I’m only critical because this race was almost $50. Despite signing up weeks ago, my size was no longer available, so this one’s going to a friend.
Best of all SO great to see these ladies!
How was your Thanksgiving? Did you turkey trot? Are you a black Friday shopper?

That was nice, consistent running. Well done!

Just being there with you and Sara made it such a fun day!!! ๐

Nice job, girlie. Super sweet fleece!

Great job! I would feel the same way about the race shirt. If you pay enough you should get a decent shirt, I think. Oh well, sounds like it was a fun experience anyway! I did some online shopping yesterday. Black Friday is not for me!:)

Great job on the race and …. beautiful photos.
Unfortunately… in Italy we don’t celebrate the Thanksgiving (it would be a day off more), we don’t have the Turkey Trot and of course we don’t have a Black Friday but we have…. the mighty Black Knight!!!!!!!

Good job!! For $50, I would want it gold! ๐ I understand your frustration!!!!
Kim says
Great job on the race! I think $50 is really high for a local race but I still remember the days when I only paid $15-20/race!!
How did Thanksgiving go with the MIL? I thought about you the other day and hoped that it was all good!!!
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
Glad to see you are still alive… desperately waiting on a MIL update

I actually really like the fleece; we got similar ones last year although hooded. If it helps they seem to run big and I am swimming in my medium.
Great splits! This was the first 8k I ever ran, I did it back in 2012, and it’s a pretty course. But it’s weird to me how much more expensive it is than the Schaumburg one.
Marcia says
Heather I wonder if it’s the municipality that is gouging and driving up the price? Or if the race organizer is because he knows it sells out.
