This past weekend the Caveman and I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary. I know where has the time gone? It goes faster and faster, I swear.
He treated to me to a 90 minute massage featuring reflexology (that’s a fancy way of saying awesome foot massage in case you were wondering). What runner does not appreciate a good foot rub? If you follow the MHS Facebook page, you already know that I was stressing about said foot massage due to a rather large blood blister acquired at the New York City Marathon. I worried the masseuse would be grossed out, but many of you assured me they see gross feet all the time. So I sucked it up and went for it.
The place was…um….different. Any massage I’ve ever had has been in a private room. This place was Asian and there was one big, dimly-lit communal room. Clothes stayed on, thank you very much, as I’m one high-strung, uptight prude on my best day. So I flopped down and relaxed with my feet in a bucket of hot water while my guy…I mean masseuse…went to town on my head and neck. It was very nice until the guy across from me started snoring. Only in my world.
Surprisingly the reflexology was just ok. I could feel my masseuse pause as he surveyed the blood blistered real estate. He stayed well away from it. I thought the massage was complete and sat up to leave but no, there was a back massage too, so I flipped over. And oh my that was fabulous. I’m thinking it was Shiatsu massage as I know that one you stay clothed for. I needed it sooooo badly and it hurt so good! Massages are always something I say I will do during training cycles, yet I never seem to follow through.
Do you enjoy massages? Do you get them as regularly as you should? Have you been to a communal one?
The Women’s Running Telesummit starts tonight! Join me, Katherine Switzer, Jeff Galloway and a whole host of awesome running experts as we talk about training, nutrition and everything else to run strong into your 40’s and beyond. I’m not a huge fan of massages, altho I think that if I could relax it would be beneficial. Last year when my sister and I were in Vegas, we thought it would be awesome to have a foot massage. The masseuse I had kept telling me I was type A and needed to relax. I know that and I didn’t need him to tell me that! I felt like he was judging me and the massage wasn’t one bit relaxing…

That certainly sounds different than any massage I’ve ever gotten! I have really only ever had one that wasn’t a sports massage and it was a hot stone massage-wonderful!

Happy Anniversary! That was a very nice gift. I love a good massage…any type. I did get them regularly earlier this year when I was having hip issues. At the time, I had a plantars wart and kept it covered. It grossed ME out…I didn’t want anyone else to see! It would be weird to be in a room with others.

That seems so weird to me that your massage was in an open room! I love a good sports massage during training. It hurts but I always feel so much better after!

My sister is a masseuse and a really good one. She finds all those spots that really hurt and brutalises them into submission. I always feel so much better afterwards.

I love massages but don’t get them very often.
No, I’ve never been to a communal one – I would be bothered if someone started snoring – I’m sure a snarky comment or two would slip out!!!
