4 days post race, I’m still feeling giddy about the whole weekend. It was everything I’d hoped for and more (well not the wind, but in a warped way, conquering that without letting it ruin my attitude kind of rocked).
As much as I complained about my NYRR training plan being “too easy” in retrospect, it was more enjoyable that way and my finish time did not suffer. I felt pretty great.
Speaking of feeling great, my legs were sore until about noon on Tuesday then the stiffness started to lift. Fairly typical I think, although I was waaaay more sore after my first marathon than I’ve ever been since.
Immediately after the race, I noticed my whole core was sore. Abs, back, shoulders were sore to the touch. I think it was from bracing against the wind. I definitely felt more beat up after this race than others. The core soreness was gone by the following morning though.
I also have really big, bizarre bruises. On the side of my wrist, across my tricep, a large circle on my abs…I have no clue…I could’ve been elbowed in the race….
I am still so dry. Mega chapped lips and windburn.
Also feeling exceptionally hungry and dehydrated, despite constant eating/drinking. I drank for a cool weather race but did not take into consideration the extreme winds. I think they were super dehydrating.
I started in with the festive red cups in NYC and it needs to stop.
I’m still down a couple of pounds from pre-race weight, According to my high-tech robo scale, body fat is down and hydration is up. In the past I’d always weigh more post-marathon. What is up with that? I’ll take it though!
I entertained the thought of running yesterday then remembered the king of all blood blisters. I haven’t put on a running shoe since I got home and I don’t want to just yet.
In light of said blister, I’m going to rethink my distance shoe. I’ve worn Mizuno Wave Creations for every single marathon I’ve done and all but one half. These current ones never felt great on the left foot but I blew it off because it was “my marathon shoe”. Maybe not anymore.
Some of you asked to see what I got at the expo. Here you go:
Plus a finisher’s shirt at Marathon Village on Monday. With Elizabeth! I thought I did a good job holding back. Lord knows I wanted everything!
It’s hard to sit atop this endurance base and not entertain another marathon. I’d be lying if I didn’t do a little shopping yesterday. Did not pull the trigger though.
Has a favorite shoe ever stopped working for you? Do you shift gears after a goal race or sign up for more? Neutral runners what shoe do you wear for distance?
Insoles & Beyond Shopping Spree Winner: Congrats to Rachel H.! Rachel please contact me and I’ll get you hooked up with your prize. Thanks to everyone who entered and to Insoles & Beyond for sponsoring. Stay tuned for more fun stuff coming up!

That race sounds like it took a lot out of you!!
About the shoe, is it possible that you just got a lemon? I have had shoes stop working for me. They seem to exacerbate running problems; but, after I started doing pt the shoes are fine again. Yours just sounds like a bad pair.
That photo of you -you are beautiful!
Heather says
The wind is definitely more taxing than I ever realized. I think you had worse, but my 50k was killer windy too and I felt like I was working way too hard for what it was. I have felt parched ever since, too.
I have never really found a perfect shoe yet. I am excited though, my mom bought me a pair of hokas for my birthday!
Darlene says
Yes, all the time. I started loving Saucony and then Asics and then Brooks. I thought I loved New Balance but they just gave me a horrible blister so I am on to Mizunos.
Katie says
I’m a creation wearer also and I think they’ve changed. I think I’m currently running in the 14s (or whatever last year’s model was) and i have an unhappy hip since I started in them. And this is my 2nd pair of 14s???? No clue, maybe it is mental because I bought blue instead of pink????
Lora @ Crazy Running Girl says
That shirt you got is the one I wanted to get!!

I really want to love so many shoes but I think I have had less problems with the Hoka Stinsons then any other shoe. There are the Altra shoes I would like to try too. For races, I’m always signing up for them!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I just love your positive, pragmatic attitude! And so glad that you had fun with this race. With that wind, there was not going to be PRs for anyone! LIke you, I’m considering another marathon for 2015. That’s all. It’s under consideration. For now, I’ve got some rebuilding to do over the next couple of months and then training for a half in March. We’ll see how that goes.
Carly @ Fine Fit Day says
I like Mizuno Wave Inspires or Rider. I also find the Saucony Kinvara super, super comfortable while running, but anything longer than about 10 miles and they give me blisters between the toes. Maybe try a different Mizuno model since you already like them? I also hear great things about the Asics Gel Nimbus for neutral runners.
Marcia says
Carly I wore the Gel Nimbus years ago. I may revisit them!
Kim says
I think the wind definitely dehydrated you – hope you are back to normal soon!! Glad that you aren’t too sore – weird about the bruises.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Wind can definitely take a lot out of you especially when you’re battling it for 26.2 miles! I think you showed great restraint at the expo ๐ Sorry the shoe troubles — Since you like Mizuno, have you thought about the Wave Rider? I love the 18s!
Char says
My last Mizunos (Wave Riders) weren’t right either. For the first time ever they gave me bruising on the top of my left foot if I did any sort of distance with them so they’ve been relegated to speed shoes. I wasn’t the only one in my group who had issues with them and apparently Mizuno is going back to the previous sizing/shaping? because of too many complaints.
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
Love all he expo stuff and also your finisher’s shirt. Looks like they had great stuff.
Andrea says
Loved following your whole journey. So glad it turned out so great.
There aren’t many marathons I have any desire to run but New York is one.
Jill says
You are adorable, Louise! Loving your hair! Great swag pics…I’d have a hard time saying NO to everything, too.
Recently started loving the Hoka Clifton. Love at first run! (still a big fan of the Kinvara, and Brooks PureFlow….light and fluffy all the way :)).
xo
Erica @ erica finds says
I had a weird bruise on my shin and my lower back was very sore. Could it be wind related?! That would be strange.
I am also loving my Hoka Cliftons. I did wear my marathon shoe Karhu Fast 3.
I signed up for a Turkey Trot 8K and almost for the half that weekend in Schaumberg. I probably will. Just post race Philly was on my mind. But, thankfully it is sold out!
Laura@ Fit Running Mama says
Congrats! So amazing!! I hope one day to do another marathon! I wear Mizuno wave riders– for years I wore Adidas but last year switched and I’ve been SOOO happy
Gigi says
Ever since I have started running I will have a shoe that I love, get a bunch of pairs and then without fail I start to hate them. Then I find a new favorite and either the company changes them (I am looking at you Mizuno and you changing the Wave Rider 16s!!) and I hate the new ones or my feet just change. I have gone from Brooks to Newton to Mizuno to Hokas to Mizunos….. Right now I am still in my mizuno 16s for all runs, short and long. I am a neutral runner with neuromas in both feet.
Kovas - Midwest Multisport Life says
Early in my running career I ran in the Nike Air Pegasus and then one model year they switched to a really skinny last, just didn’t work for me.

That is just SO AWESOME that you did the NYC marathon! What an incredible life item to check off the old bucket list! And your someecard made me laugh out loud! :)-Ashley

all the eating. having to throw candy and granola away that’s in the house so I don’t eat an 11 serving package in one sitting. I still can’t finish putting this race into words. buckling down today to do so. and yes, picked THE race. more on that soon.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
I wear the pure flows and pure cadences these days! I used to wear a much heavier shoe with a thick heel, but the transition to a lighter shoe really helped my form.
Glad that you are recovering well from the race!
Elle says
Oh gosh.. blood blister. HATE them so much. Do let it heal well…
Mike says
That wind must have been killer!
I run in New Balance 1080’s and find slight variations in model year. Usually some improvements and sometimes slight degradations. I ran Chicago in the previous version because I like it better than the current version.
Carla says
It’s possible that the bruises are because people knocked into you from the wind. It sounds like the wind was so hard that ya’ll probably got used to it and didn’t even notice that it was a person and not the wind.
I hope that blister heals soon. Blood blisters are the worst.
I managed to maintain composure at my first expo. Not sure if that will continue for the one in April since my son is also running a half with me.
kilax says
I love the orange shirt you picked out!
Too early for the red cups for you? Ha ha – I like them ๐ They help me get in to the holiday mood.
I bet the core soreness is totally from the bracing! Those bruises though? No idea, lol!
Marcia says
Kim maybe a little early for the red cups but I don’t mind too much. I do mind that I’ve been treating myself to the holiday drinks a little too consistently. :p I too love the orange! Wish they had a long sleeve version for winter!
