Just the other day, when I finished my final “pseudo long run” for NYCM, the caveman and I had a convo that went like this:
Me: “That went about as well as it could have.”
C: Once NYCM is done, you’re not running marathons anymore, right?”
Me: Well….nothing domestic appeals to me at the moment…
but if somehow the opportunity to run London or Berlin presented itself, I’d be all over that….”
C: When’s Berlin?
And there it was. The seeds for future epic adventures were planted. I know pulling off a marathon abroad will be no small task. Heck, it’s taken a village getting trained and shipping my glycogen-stoked carcass to NYC this weekend. I know the first step to getting there is getting the Caveman’s support. He didn’t argue with it and I know he filed it away. It may not (make that won’t) happen next year….but I’m going to give these seeds plenty of water and sunshine and who knows? Never say never, right?
How do you get your partner/family to support your plans and goals?
Bri says
I wish I had support like that, haha! When I get ideas for the next awesome endurance sport event I want to do, it’s usually met with, “Aren’t you ever going to take a break? Do you really want to train all summer again?”
That sounds like an awesome goal! I would love to do a marathon abroad!

Love to hear stories like that! Mr. Z is very similar. I think it helps that we keep our running from totally overtaking our day-to-day lives. Then the partner is more likely to be on board for an adventure like Berlin, etc.
My friends loved that race, btw!

Berlin sounds like fun! I might choose London or another English speaking marathon just to make the trip a little simpler, but it probably won’t be a problem with such a big race.
Marcia says
Kovas when we were last in Berlin everyone was great with English. I think the only time I had an issue in Europe was on the French side of Belgium and then I whipped out my high school French and all was right with the world. Haha!
Kim says
love that the Caveman is supportive and will help you achieve your dream!!
Chris is like that, too which is nice because sometimes he pushes me to do things I want to do but might not otherwise do.
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
That’s awesome! An international race, other than Canada, is on my list of things to do!
Mike is very supportive, since he races too!

My husband is the most laid back person of all time, so he goes along with pretty much anything.
Tricia's Mostly Healthy Life says
That was a pretty big seed! I would probably suck up -well, try to suck up- the knee injury to run in Berlin.
Amanda - TooTallFritz says
LOVE this post! LOL! I scatter seeds too. Sometimes. Other times, I just blog about the upcoming adventure so he can read about it. Then by the time he gets home he has already “blown” and is calm enough to discuss it. Sometimes we don’t discuss it, I just put it on the calendar. Sounds rude, I know but I try to keep things as calm as possible. He doesn’t have to like my running but he doesn’t have to be nasty about it either.

That response was definitely positive. I’d almost say that was a resounding’sure – go ahead and book into Berlin’. That’s exciting!!
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
Wonderful that he is so supportive, it is great to have that.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Seriously? When’s Berlin? Can he give husband classes? And can I sign mine up?
Mike says
That’s awesome you get such great support! Berlin sounds fun.

haha! i’m VERY lucky that Rich is an athlete and avid racer, too. The hardest part is not picking races on the same weekend and figuring out how we can afford to do it all ๐
Michelle says
HOW EXCITING!!!! My hubby is pretty supportive of my races knowing it keeps me sane. Our bank account doesn’t afford us the ability to race/travel abroad so that isn’t an issue for us, LOL! I’ll live vicariously through all my friends who get to travel!!
Elle says
I am with you… almost everyone in Europe speaks English… oversimplification, yes, but I am pretty sure it is true!
Great to plant these little seeds. I do that sometimes too, and then let them grow a bit… and sometimes I just throw the whole plant at him. hahaha!
I hope you DO get that overseas marathon one day.
Emily @ Out and About says
Really cool that your husband is so supportive of your running adventures! I’ve heard amazing things about Berlin. Anytime I get the implied nod of approval, I start researching travel details. Then I sloooooowly mention them in passing conversation to get the wheels moving. =)

Oooo, I hope you get to do Berlin some day!!! ๐ Steven is pretty cool when I want to do something, and supports me, so I try to be the same way for his hobbies ๐
Carly @ Fine Fit Day says
Berlin would be an amazing adventure! My dream is to run the Paris marathon and it’s really the only time Fran has given me a resounding, ‘no way’. He feels it would cut way too much into precious wine-drinking and cheese-sampling time. I’m working on it!

I’ve always wondered how people fared with regard to jetlag and marathoning. It sounds like such a recipe for disaster to me. And then throw in the different foods and other potential fun-yet-sometimes-stressful parts of travel…you’re much more adventurous than I am! I’d rather just go on the trip withOUT the marathon!
(we were in Paris during their marathon a few years ago. it was a surprisingly warm day and pretty much everyone looked miserable. then we saw all the post-marathon tourists hobbling around the museums and metro stations for a few days after. IDK…is that fun?)
