First: Huge congrats to our weekend racers. It was SO much fun to watch my FB and IG feed. The Chicago Marathon weather could not have been more perfect and I am so very proud of all of my runners who threw down one stellar performance after another. Seriously you made this coach very proud.
Week 13 of NYCM training is complete! Stuff in blue is what actually happened.
Total Mileage: 28
Monday: Upper body strength
Tuesday: 3 miles Sick
Wednesday: 6 miles 10x400m. Sick
Thursday: 6 miles
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 22.03 miles
You may notice my training veered off the track this week. Tuesday afternoon while I was skating I started to feel AWFUL. Terrible body aches. Chills. I went home and beelined straight for bed. Sweating, shivering, gross. And pissed.
Miraculously though I felt A TON better when I woke up on Wednesday. I’m calling it flash flu. Still drained and mildly achy so I laid off the workouts. I hated missing the speedwork but nothing good comes from pushing too hard, right? Plus my left knee is wonky. Maybe the body aches exacerbated this. I’m going with that. I expected Thursday’s 6 to be slow and weak, and the first mile was, but it all picked up from there and became a very decent progression run. Saturday’s 22 was nothing short of a miracle. Conditions were perfect, I felt great and the miles just fell away. Knee pain reared its ugly head from time to time but nothing horrible. I swear it hurt more on the days I didn’t run. I slowed a touch at mile 15/16 but then my pace picked right back up. What? Felt like I definitely could have done more. The knee is on watch but overall the 22 was confidence builder for sure.
And with that I AM TAPERING! NYCM is drawing ever closer. Congrats again to all the weekend racers! I cannot wait to read your race reports!
What was fun for you this weekend? Did you enter my giveaway?

I’m so relieved for you that the flu was short-lived. Could have been so much worse (especially knowing that you’ve had Ebola in your country). I hope the knee thing sorts itself out too.

Nice post and as of from my view as well as experience sometime while continuous running i have felt sick so we have to take some break in running. Thanks for sharing.

So glad that was a “flash flu”! Getting sick during training stinks. You were smart and you have the base so it is no biggie though! Smart decisions – that is why they call you “Coach”.
We had a BLAST at Prairie State 1/2. Perfect conditions and I ran strong so I feel good for NYC, too. Did 18 in total. Plus – 3 20s this cycle. Ready or not, here I come! You won’t be surprised to hear that I lost my voice cheering for my super friends (and strangers) in Chicago. So much fun! Congrats on your trainees!

So glad your “flash flu” was a quickie! Being around sick kids all the time, I worried that I’d pick something up for my race. I became pretty OCD about handwashing! Enjoy the taper. You’ve earned it. Now it’s your turn to run!!
Laura@Fit Running Mama says
We had a couple of days of feeling icky over here– It was fast but it has to be the weather. Enjoy the taper!

I’m glad the flu passed so quickly–I think that’s often the way with things like that, thankfully. And at this point (as you know) they hay is in the barn anyhow, so missing a few runs is all ok. Now bring on that taper!
Heather (Where's the Beach) says
Oh yuck thankfully you got over it quickly. Enjoy the taper!

I spent much of the weekend with my middle son – a horse festival, hanging out at REI and Dick’s, nice bonding time ๐

Yay taper! I can’t wait to see how NYCM goes for you!
We ran 20 miles this weekend and then went hiking at Allegany State Park. We also cheered on some friends who were racing 50 miles on Saturday!

With my MC tryout last weekend, I haven’t been running much the last few weeks. Time to get back at it!
Good luck in NY! You’ll be great!

Bummer that you lost 2 days to being sick but so glad it was a short lived thing and that you came back with a great 22 mile run!!! Hopefully that little bout means you are good to go for the duration of your taper and time until your race!

22 miles, wow! Glad to hear that your flu was short-lived. NYC is such a great race you will have a blast!
Tricia's Mostly Healthy Life says
Yay for no knee pain during a run – just be careful because all the endorphins and adrenaline could be masking it.
Glad to hear your being sick was short- you must have a great immune system.
Carilyn says
Oh man, we’ve all been sick, too! Ugh. I’m just now starting to get over. My running has been pathetic – getting out there and doing it, but knowing it isn’t the smartest.
Glad you’re on the mend!

Woo hoo! So happy you felt well enough to get your LR in! Has the knee acted up before? I hope it calms down! ๐

Kim this knee pain is new. Although it is the same knee I had ITB issues with 7 years ago after my first marathon. I think this feel more “pattelar” though….as if I know what I’m talking about. Haha!

Nice job getting in a great long run after a tough week. I had my last long run before MCM on Saturday and it was one of my best training runs during this cycle. Enjoy taper time….I sure am!
