July has flown by once again. Camp is over, school is creeping up and I’m in the early phases of training for the New York City Marathon.
Mileage for July:
Running: 100. Not sure how I hit that one on the head when I wasn’t even aiming for it.
Biking: 44.
Swims: 4 (not counting pool lounging days).
Strength sessions: 8
Races: Just one. Espirit de She Chicago.
Highlights:
- We celebrated the Caveman’s milestone birthday in North Carolina with his family and twin bro.
- My 6-week focus on strength culminated in the bench press showdown (and max lift PR) with the Caveman on July 3.
- We celebrated Thing 2’s 9th birthday with a request for a repeat appearance of the infamous Pigs-In-Mud cake. This year, everything that could go wrong with the cake, did. I made a larger cake than last year which left the Kit Kats too short. The chocolate ganache was runny and oozed between said Kit Kats. What minimal piping bag skills I have took a siesta. But, in the end, the cake turned out well enough and it was a really fun party. I’m waving the white flag on pigs-in-mud from here on though. No mas. Somebody remind me of that next year.
- We’ve been grilling, swimming and playing badminton like fiends.
- Thing 1 had a clean skate and podium finish at her competition.
- I’ve been up and out for my 5:30am heat-avoidance runs. Hard to get up sometimes but so worth it.
In August:
- I’m getting my head around ramping up mileage for NYCM. I’ve run marathons before. I can do this. Yes, I can. This is a pep talk.
- Other than a couple of virtual ones, no races on the schedule.
- Another skating competition this week for Thing 1.
- I’ve been dialing in my training nutrition, being more mindful of empty calories.
- And that elephant in the room: Back. To. School. Noooo!
How did July pan out for you? What’s on tap for August? Final day for my giveaway!

Awesome job on the strength training sessions! I’m also training for NYCM… and when I’m marathon training, strength training goes out the window (sadly). Need to do a better job of it!

Why must summer fly by so fast and winter just hang out like a bad visiting in-law? Makes me REALLY sad as the boys head off to college.
Keep being badass, Louise. I don’t know how you do it all but you do!
Miss you!!

July is a wrap are sad sad words. I am not going into school to work until after my birthday. Once you start you go in all the time as there is so much to do. August is like Sunday night.
Workout wise because of Alaska all amounts down but no complaints! July was great!

August will be all about ramping up my miles. I was wondering when that was going to happen…it’s here! Yay! I’m looking forward to it.
94 miles for July for me. I didn’t realize I was that close to 100!

I can’t believe summer is soon wrapping up! I guess I spent most of mine waiting for baby and now it’s almost over. But I’m looking forward to cooler fall weather and eventually beginning my own marathon training. 🙂
