Not to be confused with a hairy workout. If you’re an Instagram friend, you probably know that I finally got a haircut last week….and that I’m not thrilled with it
Here’s the before and after. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all bad, I don’t hate it. I just wanted it shorter, because my hair grows so fast and let’s face it, I don’t book styling appointments as often as I should..cough….it’s been almost a freaking year….cough. Overall it feels fresh, healthier and I still have the mandatory running/workout pony, albeit a little too much of one for my taste. The before pic required 2 heavy-duty elastic ponytail holders and even then my hair sagged down and drove me nuts. This was not my usual stylist, if you can even have a ‘usual’ one for a nearly annual haircut. I felt like she was tentative and lacked confidence in her cutting technique. After asking her to go shorter 3 times and getting a mere molecule off each time, I simply gave up.
So I ask you:
- How long have you worn the same hairstyle? With the exception of one bob that went over like a lead balloon with the Caveman, I’ve had long layers for 10 years. Eeek!
- How do you wear your hair for workouts? Single ponytail. Sometimes a headband too. Hat or visor for outside. Hat and headband and anything else I can find for polar running.
- Do you get it cut/colored/styled regularly? Nope.
- Are you good at asking for what you want and getting it? Nope.
- What kind of shampoo do you use? I alternate between Aveda Rosemary Peppermint and Pantene Pro-V.
- How much are you willing to pay for a good haircut? This cut was $50. I feel like that was too much because I didn’t get what I wanted. The last time I had it cut here, it was $40. I have spent up to $80 for a really good haircut, but that’s too rich for my blood on a regular basis.
Feel free to answer some or all in a comment or post and tag me.

I haven’t gotten a haircut since last February, not even a trim. I am planning on donating my hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths sometime soon, in honor of my friend. I do like to have my hair in a ponytail when I run/workout, so that’s why I am waiting a bit longer. I don’t really get my haircut often and I used to dye my hair a lot but I haven’t in awhile. I think I will though when I get it cut this time!

I, too, am an annual cutter! Sometimes less than that. I stopped coloring a little over a year ago and am sort of throwing around the idea of a big chop so that I don’t have two-tone hair anymore. Pretty sure I would regret that, though, since I am not a fan of the growing out phase.
I’m super cheap for haircuts, because I rarely like them. My hair pretty much looks like a rat’s nest 90% of the time, so why pay a lot of money??
I’m a pony girl for most workouts, but you know I love me some race day braids! 🙂
And finally, I think your haircut is super cute, even if it’s not quite what you were looking for!!

Your hair looks great! I get mine cut probably once a year:/ I wear it in a ponytail almost exclusively whether I am working out or not because I hate to style it. Too much work;) I never color it but once the gray starts coming in, I will have to start;)

So pretty!
I chopped off my hair so I have to get it cut every 6 to 8 weeks. It stinks. Mostly because I feel guilty budgeting $50 every other month for my hair. I’d much rather go every quarter. I’m working on growing it out to a flirty bob so that might help. As it’s short, I don’t have to do anything to it for workouts. A win! I also love the Aveda shampoo – my one indulgence in life.

You are so lucky to have such thick hair. I hate my hair. Although I have a lot of hair, it is fine and frizzy and impossible to tame. I’ve tried wearing it long and short, no matter what it looks bad. I usually have a bob. I don’t get it cut nearly as often as I should. Mostly I pull it back in a ponytail and that is that. I color it every 4 week because I have so much gray.

My hair is super short so I have to go in every 5-6 weeks. I honestly think that if she’s a good hairdresser, she should let you go back at no charge to “fix” the issues.

I think you look marvelous! 🙂 A few years ago, my stylist suggested that I go red (which I was born with), and I’ve never looked back! I keep the same cut, too – I often find that I feel less attractive with shorter hair (weird, I know)…

Oh man! It bites that you paid that much and didn’t get what you wanted! We used to pay that much (then more) at Mario Tricoci and our lady rocked. We started going to Great Clips to save money. I haven’t been since last March! Ugh.
Are you going to do what Steven did and cut more off yourself? I helped him cut his hair 2x in January because the stylist refused to do it how he wanted!

I am so jealous of your thick speedy-growing hair! I’ve been growing out my bob since August 2012 and it’s finally getting past my shoulders. Never again! I keep my hair in a bun on top of my head so the bouncing of my run doesn’t drag a ponytail down..and so when I have to lean back on weight machines it doesn’t get in the way.
Having white blond hair means salon trips every 7 weeks…and I dread them!
Kari @ Running Ricig says
That’s so obnoxious that your stylist wouldn’t give you what you want. I’ve had my stylist tell me she won’t do something before, but she’s a friend from high school and usually what she’s saying no to actually makes sense. I got my hair cut short a few months ago, but I’m going back to my old style because I think it suited me better.
Tina@GottaRunNow says
When I run, I wear it in a single ponytail. I tried a braid, but it kept hitting me as it went back and forth!

Man I really need to get on instagram- I am missing out! Of course your hair looks great both ways ;D !!
I don’t think I have ever written about hair on any social media. But this could be a fun post to do.
My stylist sees me annually too, and I LOVE her. If I can get in the next day, I am thrilled. She will cut and highlight my med-long hair for 55$. It’s a steal!!
Haven’t really changed my style much in the last 10 years, but have colored darker to hide some iron color we get from the well water. My last Eugene Marathon pics have that shorter cut and color. I like to be able to wear a ponytail too.
Sheesh.. and there’s my blog post in a comment 🙂

Ok, here is my story. I have VERY, VERY naturally curly hair. In september of 2010 I discovered keratin treatments and never looked back. Between the 4 treatments I get a year and my beloved flat iron, you’d never know I have curly hair and I am keeping it that way.
I do have the same style – just straight and long because that is what I always wanted and didn’t get it until my 30’s. And I foil my hair a blondish color, too.

I get my hair cut and colored every 4 weeks – lots of maintenance with short hair! I have changed the style – I grow it out for awhile then chop it off and repeat. And, I change the color!!! I have gone to the same hair dresser for about 13 years – love her!!!
Your hair always looks good – even when you show running pictures!!!

I have an awesome hairdresser who knows what my hair will and won’t do and she hardly charges anything. It’s great when your sibling’s got mad hair skills. And it’s great when her daughter dances so you can swap hairdressing for dressmaking services.

First of all I didn’t know this because we literally joined Instagram 4 days ago! I’m going to find follow you right now!!
I can’t believe you don’t like it! I think your new cut is FABULOUS!!!
I change my haircut all the time. I go between short and medium length. Practically the minute I get it cut short I start growing it out. I rarely look the same for 3 months in a row. I don’t know why! I think I had a pixie cut for about 5 months once. That was probably the longest I had my hair the same at a time.
I get my hair cut every 10 weeks when it’s long and every 5 weeks when it’s short (it takes more cutting to keep the shape if it’s shorter). –Lisa

I was telling Abbey how much I hated my last haircut. She said, “Why, it looks exactly the same as it has for 15 years.” She has a point.

I love Pahla B’s comment about rat’s nest hair 90% of the time. THAT is so me.
I haven’t had a haircut in…. Wait for it… TWO YEARS! Gah!
In 2006 I chopped my waist-length hair into a pixie, let it grow out, chopped it again in 2010 into a Mohawk. First brown (natural), then platinum blonde tall Mohawk, then I shaved the sides for a “skunk” Mohawk, and finally tamed it back down to a brown fauxhawk. It was just so easy to maintain since hubby could trim it for me. But, then we moved from TX to KY, and I decided to grow it out since the summers aren’t nearly as bad here. I need a trim and thinning now (my hair is thick enough for two people), but I really hate to spend money on it since it always looks like a rat’s nest! I try to go with a boho/hippy look so I can be all like, “yeh, I meant to look like this,” lol.
When running I either go with a ponytail or a looped up rat’s nest pony. I think a milkmaid’s braid would be cute for race-day pics, but haven’t tried it yet, so I don’t know if I could get it to stay up without so many pins in my head that it would be uncomfortable to run with.

Laima cuts my hair when I ask her and she’s willing. 🙂
Haven’t had hair long enough for a ponytail in a long time.

Here’s a little secret–I’m a licensed hair dresser in three states and I worked for L’oreal Professional for many years before I had kids. Hair was my business for a huge chunk of my life. So u’d think that I’d get my hair cut and colored on a regular basis, but no–haven’t had a professional cut or color in over 10 years (that’s a decade) My husband trims the back about once a year and I cut the layers. The rest of the time it’s in a ponytail. oy! PS you are so stinkin gorgeous!

Looks like you have written about a popular subject today!
I wore my hair short for the 12 years we were on the boat and had it cut regularly but the same person. She just started charging 33 per cut. Now she is on a year-long maternity leave… yes, that is what we offer in Canada… a whole year! So I just found a new person, local to me now, and she charged 43.50 (of course the tip is on top of that) and I like it. But I let it go for a bout 4 months longer than I normally would before I got brave enough to try someone new.
I have lots of hair but the hair is thin and straight so midlength doesn’t work for me and I am so not into looking after long hair anymore!
If I color, I do it myself, even the highlights.
I think you look lovely!
misszippy1 says
You have great hair and it looks good with or w/o a cut–I’d go long periods w/o a cut, too, if I could. I on the other hand have wimpy, thin hair and so must get it cut every six weeks. I do highlights every 12. And it’s all too expensive, but I keep doing it.
michel@BabyWeightMyFatAss says
When I run/workout it’s a ponytail.
I now use Costco’s Kirklands shampoo and conditioner. Crazy good.
I go to either the beauty school or Great Clips for a hair cut that’s how I don’t have a regular girl anymore. 🙁
Jody - Fit at 56 says
I would go back & ask her to cut more that you did not get what you wanted FOR FREE! 🙂
With gray hair all under my color it has to be done a lot but I push it out due to money & use the root touch up.. with my crazy hair, I am limited to style so.. otherwise I would change it all the time! 🙂

lawd, you would die. I have had my bangs/straight hair since my 30th birthday (on the nose) so that’s a little over 3 years. I have to go every 4 weeks or so for a bangs trim, and get my hair cut AND colors 8-9 weeks. I’ve been seeing the same guy for about 3 years and LOVE him. He gives me a deal, at $70 a haircut. NOT KIDDING. And I get keratin treatment. This involves keratin shampoo, conditioner, and products…each one costing about $20 each. I spend a flipping fortune on my hair. :):) When I run or work out, it’s back in a pony tail with bangs held back by a sparkly soul band or a hat if I’m running outside.
Alyssa @ Don't Look Down says
I think it’s funny that you say $80 is too rich for your blood on a regular basis, when I wouldn’t really consider annually a “regular” basis. But I am kind of the same way. I don’t like paying a lot of money and since my hair is long going 9 months without a cut. I buy deals on groupon for haircuts so I can go to a nice salon but not pay full price!
