Not one but two virtual races happened here last week.
I ran Run with Jess’ #WinterMiles Snowball Shuffle Virtual 8k on the mill.
Ironically there were no snowballs in my running laboratory, I mean basement, and I did not shuffle either. To make sure I picked up the pace, I made my gut-busting 400m repeats the race. Jess outdid herself with the gorgeous diamond-encrusted medal. Yes diamonds, I’m sure of it.
Then on Sunday, I made 5 miles of my long run my 5 by the 5th effort.
Plenty of snow and 12 degree temps for this one, but the winds were tame and I did not break a hip so win-win.
Here’s how last week’s half marathon training panned out. The workout in red was modified to what’s written in purple. My bad.
Total Mileage: 21 miles
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Pace intervals
Wednesday: 40 minute easy run 2 mile run and 10 minutes frantic total body workout
Thursday: Running drills, strength
Friday: 10x400m
Saturday: Heavy weights
Sunday: 8 miles
Everyday: Pushups and corework
Thanks to those of you who weighed in on yesterday’s less is more discussion. As I’ve mentioned before, until this training cycle I was a 3x/week runner. While I am enjoying the 4-day/week plan I’m doing now, I feel like I’m SO hard-wired to a 3x/week plan. The Wednesday easy run has been cut short twice now out of 5 weeks and I miss having a cross training day. While I think a 4th easy day will only help my endurance, on the other hand I know a 3x/week plan has worked just fine in the past. I’m going to stick with the 4th run day through this training cycle. I guess race day will tell the tale.
In other news, I have a ‘real’ 5k this weekend. There’s also mega-snow in the forecast (when isn’t there?). This should be interesting.
How many times a week do you run? Did you race last weekend? Are you racing this coming weekend?

I’M IN!!!
It looks like you had a very solid week of training, especially with all the different varieties of strength training. Way to push through! That Snowball Shuffle medal is GORGEOUS indeed. You look so hard-core in your 5th by the 5th picture! My fingers crossed that the weather will hold up for your real 5K this weekend! This winter has been so insane. Will it ever end!?!?!?

I don’t want IN; that would require me to post a blog (but I actually DID write one the other day…I’m good for another month now :)).
I’m a firm believer of the more is better approach to marathon training; I’ve always run on 6x/week. But I also know that as I get older, those recovery days are more vital. I think changing it up a bit will be good for you and I like the 4x approach.
Gah, we’re about to have Antarctic land on us tomorrow through the weekend. I guess I deserve it for the weekend it was 60 here and you were suffering -60. Still, I’m OVER Winter!
Good luck with the race. We need to text and get updated on life!! Miss ya!

Good for you because I know I would totally slack on the virtual run. I would do 5 minutes and be done LOL.

So impressive! That is seriously hard core, especially in the winter!-Ashley

I love your running-in-the-snow outfit. So hard-core! And a little like you could potentially be a burglar.

I love the idea of the Pay it Forward.
I have just been a 3x a week runner for years. This year I’ve actually been trying to increase the days but I will probably cut back again after the 50.

My personal snowball shuffle is going to be a week late. Drat.
Alison @ racingtales says
Ha, not breaking a hip on a run is always good! I’ve tried the 3 day/week and 4 day/week plans, as well as everything else, including 6 day/week and 0 day/week (otherwise known as injured). I’ve had some interesting results. Commented to my massage therapist today that my best races this year came after mediocre or nonexistent training. Less sometimes is more!
Run With Jess says
Great job on the Snowball Shuffle!! Yeah, totally diamonds… 😉
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
You were a busy racing girl! Great job getting your miles up and trying to keep that 4th running day in the mix.

I’m in! Sounds like fun. And who doesn’t love surprises! I’m currently doing a 3 day run plan and it works so much better for me. So much better than the 5 day nonsense I was doing before. I think your workouts look great! Since I’m only running a half, my mileage isn’t anywhere near yours. It’s hard for me to say if I’m enjoying running since the temps are so cold to know if I’d ever do more than that. I need some awesome keep me warm digs, although not so sure that anything is warm enough as of late.
