Here’s how last week went down. Stuff in red didn’t happen. Stuff in purple is what I did instead.
Total mileage: 23
Monday: Yoga
Tuesday: 10x400m
Wednesday: 50 minute easy run. Pear Sports HIIT workout
Thursday: Strength and running drills
Friday: 5x1600m. 30 minute BBTN* run
Saturday: Heavy weights and swim (pffft)
Sunday: 10 miles
Everyday: Pushups and core
* Barely Better Than Nothing
All of last week’s workouts were sort of meh because on Tuesday I felt that tickle in my throat that means a bug is present. The 400’s weren’t as fast as they should’ve been, I didn’t do the easy 50, and I just could not get my head around 5x1600m. Plus it was Valentine’s Day and I was pressed to get to Thing 2’s class party. Apparently I was successful in fighting off the cold (or whatever it was) because the tickle vanished as quickly as it came leaving my wellness streak intact. Sunday’s 10 miler was fantastic. Wonders never cease.
Olympics:
OMG could we stop making Olympic athletes cry? I was heart broken for John Daly when he had that groove problem on his skeleton run. Obviously he was devastated, why make him fight back tears to talk about it? And then Bode Miller, holy crap. Could that reporter have been more rude badgering him over and over about his brother’s death until poor Bode literally could not continue? Shame on her!
President’s Day:
So are you off today? The kids are off school until Wednesday as there’s a teacher institute day tomorrow. I sure wish some of our 4 cold days off could be made up but that’s not happening.
Valentine’s Day:
I finally got picked in the lottery to help out at Thing 2’s class party last Friday. I walked into the school and who’s standing there but windmilling leg lady from my yoga class. Small world. This year no food treats of any kind were allowed on the Valentines that were exchanged. Despite the fact that we work off of a ‘safe snack list’, the class snack had to be submitted to the school nurse by 10am for clearance. While I totally get the need for vigilance for allergy purposes, part of me is bummed it’s come to this. Perhaps it would be easier if we just skipped snacks entirely. How does your school handle class parties and snacks?
We’re heading out to see The Lego Movie today. Hopefully the 3-5″ of snow in the forecast doesn’t mess with that plan. Have you seen The Lego Movie? Any other good ones?

LOVED LOVED THE LEGO MOVIE HERE!
might be round two today 🙂

As the mom of 2 nut allergic kids, I’m glad that schools have cracked down on snacks. We have made several trips to the ER after accidental ingestion of nut containing cookies from home baked goods. It just isn’t worth it. And then there is the issue of childhood obesity…Having said this, I do get where you are coming from. These parties were always so much fun when I was a kid.
Andrea says
I completely agree about the badgering of the athletes. Stop!
We are nut free in our cluster as we have a student who is severely allergic. We made all the rooms nut free to keep it safe for him. The kids are rock stars about being careful. Kids can have nuts at selected tables in the lunch room. The bottom line is we’re talking about kids lives so it’s a clear necessity.
Rachelle Q says
Glad the cold didn’t get you down:) Way to go on the 10 miler too! Very sad that no snacks are allowed:( It seems like the allergic kids should know what to eat and what not to eat or could bring their own snacks so as not to ruin it for everyone else.

Lego movie was sort of ok – IMHO.
Monument Men = (A-)
10 miler — I wish I could run farther than the fridge!!!
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
Hey, meh weeks happen! And seriously, that interview with Bode Miller was… unnecessary! I only like it when they are crying from joy, not sadness!
Kari @ Running Ricig says
I’m sort of working/going out to buy a roof rake so our roof doesn’t cave in with more snow today. Should be exciting.
Jill says
I haven’t seen the Lego Movie, doubt I will. Saw ‘Her’ with Abbey; not my favorite but it had some funny parts. Definitely not one you’d take Thing 1 and 2 to. Ha.
Great job on the 10! I wish I could run 10…
Happy Monday!

i know!!! there has been some bullshit reporting! to what en? to get a new story? I effing hate it when someone who is sposed to win or medal doesnt…we as viewers do NOT need to know “what went wrong” frick.
kilax says
Have fun at the movie! We want to see that after we get through the Oscar flicks!
I am so happy you didn’t get that bug! I hate the tickle in the throat feeling. And WTG on 10×400. I did 4×400 (my first speedwork in a long time) this week and that was just enough for me! Maybe I can get to your level in a few months… if I stick with it! 🙂
Kim says
WOW – sounds like they have sucked all of the fun out of the party – the snack thing seems extreme.
Glad you were able to fight off whatever cold/bug – good that you just went with the BBTN run instead of pushing through those 1600m repeats!
Oh, and last night I felt awful for Bode Miller – he was already a bit down after watching the gold then silver slip through his hands and then that reporter was relentless – poor guy!!
Michel@BabyWeightMyFatAss says
I’d rather they do away with the snack treats at school totally. I know it annoys people who don’t have a kid with an allergy but I’ll rather they do that and piss off a few asshole parents who don’t get the seriousness of it all then to have a kid die because someone made a mistake out of carelessness. Although Avery doesn’t have a specific allergy we have to be pretty diligent in what she eats or it wrecks havoc for days. Her school and the others school are both nut free.
And the Bode Miller thing was horrible. Worst part is that it’s on delay. NBC chose to show it even after it happened.

The coverage of the Olympics and other big events like Kona drive me crazy–always looking for that sob story instead of focusing on their athletic accomplishments. And poor John Daly!
Our school still allows snacks during parties and some of them aren’t so healthy. Plus all the candy that sneaks in with the valentine’s cards. I’d like to see that go away, honestly!
Run with Jess says
Agreed – reporters are always so pushy and bold on the questions asked. always looking for the breakdown.
Kids were suppose to have off school today – but they are making up one of the snow days (thank you).
Honestly, I hate holiday parties at school. I quit going/helping with them because of the other mothers. Drama drama that I want no part of. I wish the snack thing would just disappear… not just holidays but everyday. Our school is still wide-open on what you can bring. I’m shocked at how many parents supply a hostess brownie or similar junk as the “healthy class snack”… right before lunch. I feel like everything I try to teach my kids at home about healthy eating is sabatoged at school.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
That reporter badgering Bode made me want to throw something at the TV – I so wanted him to just walk away because she wouldn’t let it go!
Our school has eliminated communal snacks for parties – now each child can bring a “party in a bag” special snack. At this point I think we should just give up the snacks altogether.

I cannot believe all of the rules and regulations that exist these days with food allergies. It makes me wonder what I’ll be dealing with in a few years when Layla is older. Granted, I also teach high school, and those kids will eat anything, so I don’t see it quite as much at that level either. (And I mean, anything. It’s gross.)
Robin (Masshole Mommy) says
I can’t imagine being a reporter getting in an athlete’s face right after their dreams were just crushed.
Crystal says
I love watching the Olympics too! Not all reporters are pushy. I’m pretty friendly & easy going. Yup that was too much.
Sounds like you had a good week despite the tickle in your throat!
Char says
I’m totally with you on the insensitivity of reporters these days. Just the other day a young boy was killed by his Dad at cricket training and the reporters were hounding his Mum about how she felt. Seriously!! How do you think she’d feel you idiot reporter or are you so bereft of the ability to be empathetic that you honestly don’t know?
Rant over.
Amy @ Second City Randomness says
Classroom parties sound like a nightmare these days. I think it’ll be my goal to always get to sign up for cups and silverware before anyone else can… lol.
