I thought I was so sly as I quietly loaded the family stockings with goodies prematurely. One less thing to rush around and do at crunch time right? Well the jig was up yesterday when Thing 2 discovered the booty. Now there will be only coal on Christmas. Serves them right.
Adidas unveiled the 2014 Boston Marathon apparel and it is orange. Ok this doesn’t make me wanna barf, I love orange. It does smack of ING NYCM apparel….but now ING doesn’t sponsor NYCM so I suppose it’s all good.
For the record there was no cake on my birthday other than the celebratory piece they bring you when you dine out. Oddly I am at peace with that. It seems my ability to pound vast quantities of sugar is waning. In my head I want to eat all the sweets. But the reality is just a tiny amount makes me wanna barf. This is a good thing.
Many of you are putting together juicy race schedules and goals for 2014. I’ve never been a resolutioner. The mileage I run is whatever it takes to do the races I’ve planned. I actually have no idea where I am for this year, nor do I care. But I am setting one BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) for 2014:
This is the one that’s barf-worthy. I almost lost it on the swim instructor’s shoes when I went in to sign up for beginner swim lessons. I am a swim pansy to the tune of I needed to be fished out by a lifeguard once. Yes, that lame. 2014 will be the year I face my fear and learn to do something other than dog paddle. At least I hope it will be. If not at least I tried.
Do you have a BHAG? What are you hoping to find in your stocking?
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I can’t swim either! Every year I say I’m going to learn and every year I chicken out. You may inspire me to take this one on…though just typing that makes me want to barf ๐
Kate says
No new BHAG. Still tackling Dirty Kanza and hoping this is the year I put the ghost of DNFs past to rest. My teammates and I would like to do an expedition-length adventure race, but that’s limited far more by finances than hubris. ๐
One slice of birthday cake might be perfect. That would keep me from stuffing my face for the next week. Good luck with your swimming goal. You’ve got this!
Kimberly @ Healthy Strides says
I’m going to be signing up for swim lessons in 2014 as well. I got in the pool for the first time in ages last week and sucked in so much chlorine I could sanitize a water park. I definitely wanted to barf.
Jill says
I saw that Boston jacket and was so thankful I wasn’t running it this year…I WILL say “Barf”! Yuck.
Woohoo, I see a big tri in your future! ๐
Pam says
2014 is take 2 on the BHAG I missed in 2013. My first 50k. GAHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Kovas - Midwest Multisport Life says
Swimming is a good skill, good choice on the BHAG
Elle says
Love the BHAG acronym! Very catchy, and nope, I don’t have one, YET!
I love orange too but never wear it… only EAT it. The closest I come to orange is a soft coral. But your coloring would be lovely with bright orange. Not me, I am pink-skinned!
Michel@BabyWeightMyFatAss says
I want to take lessons this year as well.
That’s a lot of orange. A lot.
misszippy1 says
Good for you! You may even find that it is a nice complement to running (it is) and a godsend when injury strikes. And a must for that triathlon you will now inevitably do!
I am not a fan of that jacket color, but I do like the old school retro styling.
Mike says
Awesome BHAG for 2014! I learned to swim a couple years ago and all I’ll say is, stick with it and don’t give up. It will click at some point.
Liana@RunToMunch says
Aside from the hair time commitment, I’ve loved swimming.
The 2012 Boston Jacket was orange too, but I’m not sure how I feel about this shade.
Terzah says
I need a swim refresher (as this time in the boot is reminding me), and while I’m not really frightened of the swimming itself, I hate getting water in my ears. I think 2014 will be my year to get past that. Best of luck to both of us!
Ashley @ Snow Cream and Syrup says
I think that’s an AWESOME goal. I was a swimmer in high school but couldn’t run – and the thought of running the mile made me feel much the same way you describe your feelings about swimming. You’ll do great!
Black Knight says
What about a common goal? You will learn how to swim and I will sign up for my first swimming race (in open sea). When I was a teen-ager doesn’t count.
Happy Christmas.
Karen@ La Chanson de Ma Vie says
I love swimming! Unlike running, I have a natural ability and picked it up really quickly. I don’t swim nearly often enough. I should get a membership but the nearest pool to here is 12 miles each way in a direction I never go, so I can’t even combine it with other errands. I love that you’re learning how to swim! It is very therapeutic once you get more comfortable with it.
Personally, I think that jacket is ugly. Almost glad I didn’t qualify for the 2014 race. hehe. ๐
Kim says
The title of your post makes me laugh!!! I’m probably in the minority but I like the jacket!
Hooray for taking swimming lessons – I don’t really like to swim because I hate putting my face in the water.
I’m not sure I have a BHAG – I’m trying to decide if I want to attempt a 50-miler again or not.
Robin (Masshole Mommy) says
And here I thought I was the only adult who didn’t know how to swim.
Char says
Good on you for doing something that scares the cr@% out of you. I’m pretty sure that with the right coach you’ll be able to face your demons and dominate the pool like you do every other sport.
Jenn's Adventures says
Hmmmm, I would say my #1 BHAG for 2014, will be to take care of myself in all aspects. I’ve become a full-time caregiver in addition to being the sole provider for my family. As a result, I’ve let myself go, including my gym time. I love gym. He makes me feel sexy and we’re overdue for a date! ๐
elizabeth says
OMG! I should do this or learn to not fear the bike (hence why i will never TRI). my BHAG-BQ. it’s a super long shot for 2014, but i guess all things are possible. The stocking is one of my favorite parts of christmas-always full of random goodies.
Debbie @ Healthy Running Mom says
Seriously so darn impressed with you!
I can swim, but can’t seem to get my breathing right. Breathing for swimmig & running is SO different. I took lessons several years ago in an attemp to try to swim for exercise (with an instructor mind you), but I didn’t have the patience to follow through. I wanted it to happen immediately & then just stopped!
I think about doing it again with another coach, but I haven’t followed through!
You go Marcia!
Erica says
You are awesome. I don’t have a BHAG… Well, I should try to get a handle on my sugar addiction. That would be something! You have inspired me to at least think about it!
Carla says
I’m not liking the orange. But it’s not a good color for me.
Good luck with the swimming! I know you can do it! Look at all the other things you’ve accomplished. ๐
Rachelle Q says
I love that you are signed up for a swim class! I am a terrible swimmer. I don’t really even like to get my face/hair wet;) I wish sweets made me want to barf!
Meghan says
Ahh! Swimming! You are officially my hero. I find it to be such a great workout, but SO draining! I bet it’s going to be awesome for your marathon training, though!
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
I hope your swim lessons go well!! I love swimming, but being on a swim team from the time I was 8 years old through college definitely helps!
