Thing 2 and I baked up some special holiday dog treats with wheat germ to bring to the shelter. Don’t worry our dogs got some too. They were met with rave reviews. Here’s how you make homemade dog biscuits.ย
Homemade Dog Biscuits
- 1/3C butter
- 3/4C hot water
- 1/2C powdered milk
- 1/8t salt
- 1 egg
- 3C whole wheat flour
- 1/4C wheat germ
Put butter in a large mixing bowl and pour hot water over it. Stir in powdered milk, salt and egg. Add flour 1/2 cup at a time. Form into a ball with your hands.
Roll dough to 1/2″ thickness. Cut dough into shapes and bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet 50 minutes at 325 F. They will dry out and harden as they cool.
An 80 floor climb, wow! I need to add some more races to my calendar soon… winter makes it tricky to get excited about racing. Love the biscuits!
I have to admit I have been surprised that each time I’ve run at altitude I have felt totally ok! I don’t know if it was just my general excitement overriding everything else or what!
I did the Denver Marathon a few years back with some friends, and the altitude was tough! And that’s when I was living all year at 4000 ft! We had a blast, though! We just went into knowing it was all for fun – no PRs – and spent the whole race singing songs in Spanish (the group was from Mexico), playing hide-n-seek, and seeing how many new friends we could make. One of my best marathon memories ever!
I used to make dog treats all the time, but now one of ours is on a very very strict diet b/c of gallbladder disease. I do like to use wheat germ in pizza crust so I’d love to win more!
Well now I know what I’m making Bungee and my brother’s dog for Christmas!
I did the Empire State Building Run Up in 2012 and it was quite an experience! It was so much fun! I had no idea how to prepare for it. All I can say is to go at a steady pace and focus on your breathing. So many people go out super fast and then die out at the end. Steady is the best way to go! Good luck!
Love that you are doing the climb! March will be my 5th time doing the Big Climb here in Seattle:) Love it! Tips are: pace yourself. Use receiver gloves and use the handrails. 2 steps at a time if you can. You will probably cough at the top for a while. A sucking candy or lozenge will help with that:) Email me if you have any other q’s:) You will rock it!
So exciting that you are adding to your race calendar!!
And – I’m beyond impressed that you bake dog treats!!
Yes please! I want in! ๐ I’ve never raced at altitude or done a climb–kudos to you!
You’ve all kinds of fun stuff lined up! I’ve always wanted to do one of those stair climbs and I’ll be interested to hear how it goes for you. Never raced at altitude, only run and it definitely affected me. But for the scenery in Colorado, I’m sure it’s worth it.
Aww, my mom makes homemade bones for Bernie! He loves them!
That’s really fun about R&R Denver, I’ve never been to Colorado but I would love to go!
I would love to try theses! ๐
I’ve never done a destination race outside of the Midwest, and I don’t think I will for awhile with the little lady, but ZOOMA Napa Valley did look pretty tempting…
1) I race at altitude EVERY TIME. I live a mile above sea level in central NM
3) homemade dog biscuits – why don’t i ever think of things like that?
Redemption at RnR will be happening – oh yeah!
Hi Thing 2 – miss her!
Crap I saw the dog treats before I read & thought they were cookies!!! ๐ You are a racing fiend!!!
I WANT TO WIN TOO! ๐
Can you do the doggy biscuits with chocolate chips? Toby does love him some chocolate and after all it is Christmas.
I’ve never raced at altitude but have run and hiked. At 12000 feet or so we could only take about 10 steps before being totally out of breath.
It should be a fun race though!
Always wanted to try wheat germ! thanks for the opportunity!
I would love to try wheat germ. I’ve never had it before.
I want to try these. I look interesting to try.
I love wheat germ! i should probably bake Olive some treats instead of buying them. ๐
Yes, sweet Olive needs some treats!
I want in! Trying to incorporate wheat germ into some foods.
