So it turns out the race bully I mentioned the other day is 48 years old. Not that it would be acceptable for someone younger to display such poor sportsmanship, but I find her behavior even more peculiar since I’ve learned she’s close in age to me. I could not in a million years imagine shoving anyone, especially a child, ever, let alone in a race (beyond the finish line no less). Further stalking reveals no race history for her. Maybe this was her first race and she didn’t understand the finishing chute process? Still doesn’t forgive the shoving and yelling…or attempting to cut in front of 3 people…I guess it baffles me even more.
As karma would have it, Thing 1 won 3rd in her age group, which makes this whole thing even funnier, at least to my twisted sense of humor. Bully woman was 7th in her AG so as I suspected, not remotely close to winning anything. Even if she’d been successful in cutting in front of everyone in the finishing chute, she would’ve ended up off the podium. So I’ll chalk this up to sheer rudeness, plain and simple.
Alright here’s how October wrapped up:
Miles run: 60. A paltry total for me, relatively speaking. I think my longest run this month was 8 miles. But with my focus on 5ks, an 8-mile long run is fine by me. I re-introduced a weekly speed workout this month. Mostly 400- and 800m repeats. Although still pathetically slow (comparatively speaking) my 400’s have gotten 10 seconds faster in a month’s time, so progress nevertheless.
Miles biked: 0. My left knee was weird and I suspected it was from riding so I intentionally laid off this month. Knee seems fine now. Go figure.
Strength and plyo intervals: 2 strength sessions/week and 1 plyo session/week. Rotator cuff has been behaving. Pumped about that so I’m carefully resuming upper body strength work.
Books: Say what? I actually read something other than mags? Grain Brain and Unbreakable.
Movies: We saw Gravity. That was intense.
Races: Two 5ks
D96 Dash (Thing 1’s first 5k)
Trick or Treat Trot: My first race in costume. Ever. Guess I’m becoming fun in my old age…or ridiculous.
Drink: Loving the pumpkin spice coffee.
Food: I’m all about the ‘queeno’ now that I’m Grain Brain Challenging.
Speaking of Challenges:
Completed ElectaFi’s Sweatfor5 UnderArmour challenge.
Completed Month 1 of One Small Change! 2 more months to go so join us!
Going forward:
I feel like I need to start getting my head (and body) around NYCM 2014 (yes, I’m IN AT LAST!). I have enjoyed this cutback year and I feel like I’m on the road to having my health issues dealt with. But it will take some significant time to get back to ‘marathon shape’ mentally and physically so that process starts now.
How did October go for you? Goals going forward?
misszippy1 says
I agree–even more crazy that it was an adult in this situation! Wow. Glad thing 1 came out on top.
I think your marathon experience will be great, especially after the time off. I need to do the same one of these days–time to get off the marathon train for a while.

I loved Gravity. I’m even willing to pay to see it again (unheard of!). VERY excited for you with New York–it’s a really fun one.
I hope the woman who shoved your daughter decides *not* to do any more races.
Elle says
What was that woman thinking? UnREAL!
Sounds like you had a good month!
Emily @ Out and About says
It still makes me so angry to hear about that bully woman. But congrats to your daughter for her AG placement! Now THAT is cool!
I am really excited for you to run the NYCM next year! I think 2014 is going to bring lots of great things for you!
lindsay says
I mean, I could *maybe* see if you were about to crap your pants and needed to get to the bathroom… but otherwise there is no excuse for her. Ridiculous.
PSLs… groupon.com/deals/starbucks-search $5 for $10 e-gift. You’re welcome! 🙂 (You do have to search for ‘starbucks’ but it should come up)
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Seriously what was this woman thinking?! Congrats to Thing 1 on her AG!
How exciting about NYC 2014!
Lisa @ RunWiki says
I’m so sorry. What the heck is wrong with people? Maybe she was feeling one up’ed in other areas of her life, maybe her husband just left her for someone else. I don’t know, but no need to be rude to a young girl.
Jody - Fit at 55 says
I don’t know about the woman – some people are just not nice… 🙁 Congrats to your daughter!!!
I hope all the health issues get resolved & 2014 is a great one for you!
Me – I don’t stress myself with goals & stuff anymore – I am too hard on myself. 🙂
Amanda @runtothefinish says
Still not sure I’m on board with the grain brain, but I respect all of you giving it a go.
Loved Unbreakable!!
Pete B says
Glad the bully was not even close to the podium and your daughter was. That’s karma! I want to run NYC again. It was my favorite marathon ever.
Kim says
Still can’t believe how rude that woman was – gotta wonder what she was thinking?!
Great job for Thing 1 with the age group placing!!!
We rarely go to movies at the theater but we did watch The Heat on DVD the other night – very entertaining!
Kat says
Sometimes adults can be worse than ‘kids’! Congrats to Thing 1!
Rachelle Q says
Wow that woman definitely has a problem. Sad:( Sounds like you had a pretty good October, and wearing a costume in a race is fun, not weird;)
Karen@ La Chanson de Ma Vie says
5Ks do a number on my body, particularly my digestive system. I’d probably assume that she had to poop real bad and was impatient for that reason. That’s the only reason I’d do something like that.
I love the Batman mask!
Char says
Congrats to Thing 1 on her age group place. That’s pretty awesome!
Jill says
You may enjoy reading the book: Wheat Belly.
Nice job, Thing 1. Payback can be a bitch…and karma come in spades. Very happy for her!
Woohoo – marathon training again. I type that as I sit here and think I’m seriously done with the road marathon – I’m more achy training on the road for CIM for 3 months than I was 8 months training for Leadville. The road is not kind to my aging body. Hey, Thelma and Louise need a road marathon next year together!! Haha.
Carla says
Bully Runner needs to be outed even more. She should have her face posted on Facebook with shares of nasty comments. Otherwise this hideous behavior will only continue. Of course, that would then make me a bully so I guess this will have to do.
October was a total rest month. Ha! I’m back on the wagon again.
Mike says
Yay for Thing 1!
GiGi Eats Celebrities says
Wow. No words. Race Bully. Wow.
I saw Gravity this past month too… I know everyone liked it but… All I could think was, WOW… Sandra was just breathing heavily the entire movie. LOL!
MIZ says
FORTY EIGHT?!?!
Kari @ Running Ricig says
That is seriously so weird about the race bully. What does your daughter think about it?
My October was sad for running, but I did manage to hit 100 miles for the month, so I can’t complain too much…even though that’s like half of what I normally run.
Kovas - Midwest Multisport Life says
Being ridiculous is fun in our old age 🙂
Marcia says
Kovas I hadn’t thought of it that way: couple more years and I can start playing the ‘crazy old lady’ card. Hey what am I waiting for?
Tink says
I told RRB about the race bully and he was flabbergasted. Some people are just insane. Hilarious that you stalked her though, I would too!
Kim says
I’m thinking about running the NYC Marathon next year through a charity(unless I get chosen through lottery). It would be my 1st marathon so I am really nervous. I’m from New York though so it would be so great to complete my 1st marathon here. Good luck with your training.
MILF Runner says
Ugh. Bullies suck.
Gravity was AMAZING.
elizabeth says
I will finally meet you at NYC next year! Woohoo!! Interesting about the bully…will be curious if she’s at yalls next local race and how she acts (if she caught the running bug). October was a fabulous month- another year older and finally running again.
