Everything about this month seemed to be about moving to Plan B.
- My jerk shoulder continued to be a jerk.
- School and ice show madness came to a welcome end.
- Thing 1 went away for the longest 2 weeks of my life.
- I was on again/off again and ultimately in for a steamy Chicago Women’s Half.
- I resumed my beloved early morning runs. I hope to always keep these in some capacity.
- The kids’ birthday party was last weekend. We planned on a backyard blowout, complete with inflatable slip n slide. On Wednesday though, 5+” of rain and a forecast high of 72 for Saturday caused me to move to Plan B: No water fun and lots of alternate planning. We did a neighborhood version of The Amazing Race that was a crap ton of work but in the end loads of fun.
In case you missed it on Instagram, I unleashed my inner Martha Stewart on this sucker.
Once Thing 2 found this cake while googling, she set her pig-loving heart on it. I’d never worked with fondant before, but it wasn’t too bad. I think finding full-sized Kit Kat bars was my biggest challenge.
Enough about June. How can it be July already? Here are some highlights:
- Because I’m not running as much as I normally would, I’m using this month to cleanup my diet. In the wake of birthday cake madness, and in an effort to clear the chocolate-marshmallow icing from my bloodstream, another round of sugar detox is in order.
- I’m heading to Leadville! My pal Jill (aka Thelma) is channeling her inner badass and running the Leadville Silver Rush 50 miler in a couple of weeks. I am honored to be part of the crew that will cheer/cajole/drag her on to success!
- Espirit de She: The Chicago race is on July 18 and I can’t wait. Sponsored by Lifetime Fitness and Athleta (two faves) it’s sure to be a blast. If you’re planning on signing up, don’t wait, as it’s nearing sellout.

This summer, I am most looking forward to (and most nervous at the same time) branching out into triathlon. I’m a slow runner, and I will be a slow triathlete, but I’m excited about it anyway!

My plan is to continue training even though it’s Winter here in Australia. Getting quite cool at times but it’s not so noticeable after the first couple of kilometres. Nice to see so many more women taking the time out to keep fit, it’s really important to look after our bodies 🙂
