Before I get into weekend brain surgery, I mean festivities, here’s how the week panned out workout-wise:
- Monday: Spin class, upper body weights
- Tuesday: 6 mile run 2x1200m, 4x800m, lower body weights
- Wednesday: Yoga
- Thursday: Run 7 miles, 4@tempo pace, corework. This sucked. Legs were dead. Not sure why.
- Friday: Run 2 miles, total body weights, fitness circuit involving kettlebells, planks, burpees, squats, lunges, ouchie.
- Saturday: Spin class upper body weights
- Sunday: 10 miles
We road tripped to Champaign, IL for a wedding this weekend. Instead of excavating a nondescript, certainly black relic that’s at least a decade old from the closet, I plunged into the danger zone and went shopping for a new dress. Because the Caveman and kiddos are critics of the highest order and I’m a glutton for punishment, I dragged them along. It was not pretty. I settled on something I felt was way too booty conscious, er I mean form-fitting. But after being assured by both the Caveman and Thing 1 that I could pull it off, I dragged it home. Chalk it up to being worn down. Or overheated. Or both. The new dress hung in my closet untouched for weeks because I was sure I’d find something more suitable read: less booty hugging. Except I never went shopping again. How is it as runners we can shop for running gear almost daily but we’d rather undergo a root canal than shop for ‘civilian’ wear, especially formal?
So we made it down to Champaign without too many dips in to the road snack bag. I credit the tight dress and listening to a podcast on nutrition for keeping me away from the feed bag.
When we got to the wedding venue I quickly realized the groom was a Marine.
When I see Marines, a certain race comes to mind.
So does a certain favorite bling bling. But I controlled myself and did not mention a single word about the Marine Corps marathon. It’s their day not mine. Haha!
The wedding was beautiful, and fun and my dress did not pull any fast ones. It’s no running skirt, but it’s good to get out of the comfort zone every so often right? By the end of the night my dogs were barking loudly. Forget Manolos, I’ll take some comfy Mizunos anyday. What? You want to see the dress that caused so much angst? Here you go:
But I am not showing you the booty.
Is getting dressed up a PIA for you? Or is it fun? Or both?

You look beautiful in that dress!
I don’t like dressing up because a) I don’t know what to buy, b) nothing ever fits right, c) I never have the right shoes or accessories to go with it. There is a cute boutique by my house (in a neighbor’s basement), and her specialty is putting people in total outfits, so when I have had a big event in the last couple years, I go see her, and she gives me a few options for dresses, then picks the accessories. Each time I’ve done it I’ve gotten a ton of compliments, so I guess she knows what she’s doing!

You look absolutely gorgeous, and I LOVE the dress! I think I’d like dressing up if I a) had somewhere to go; and b) could guarantee that I’d leave the house without peanut butter fingers on my bum. Sadly, I think the last time I really got dolled up was my brother’s wedding 1.5 years ago, and I had to pick a dress based on my BF mom status. Still cute, though. Note to self: Schedule sitter for fancy night out.

I love dressing up after I AM all dressed up. But the planning and the trying on and the accessorizing stresses me the eff out.
A fashion goddess, I am NOT.
Kari @ Running Ricig says
hahah! I feel the same way! That’s why when we went to my brother’s wedding two weeks ago, I video chatted with my sister to raid her closet for something to wear. That dress looks awesome, though!
Kim says
Dang – you’re smokin’!! Great picture with your girls!
Funny, I used to live less than 30 miles from Champagne (5th-8th grade).
And, I like to get all fancy every once in awhile but athletic wear is my daily norm anymore!!
Andrea says
It looks like the dress is great on you! I would way rather wear workout clothes or comfy dresses like Horny Toad.

Hate, hate, hate having to get dressed up! I have been known to go shopping for an important occasion and come home with running shorts (what was I thinking? That they kept dresses in the fitness section?). I almost went into melt-down last year over my niece’s wedding. But because I persisted, I’ve ended up with two nice dresses which will be worn to the grave as long as I don’t change size. I may never have to shop for dresses again.

You are a hot mama all dressed up and ready to go! Well done. I am like you…dressing up just seems like a forgotten art to me I do it so rarely. I had a wedding this weekend also and feel like I could have done a better job with it. Give me the running clothes any day!

Love the dress! You look awesome:)
Carilyn Johnson (@CarilynJohnson) says
The dress is rockin’, Marcia, and you totally pulled it off! And I’m with you on the shopping – hate it! Always end up wearing the same thing over and over because I’m too lazy to go buy something new. But I do manage to keep a stack of unopened running shoes in my closet 🙂
Carli says
You look fab in the dress! I’m quite positive the booty looks just as great as the front. I love to shop. Well, thrift. But my goal right now is to trim up my abs so I can wear different types of fit gear when I teach.
Jill says
You look amazing, truly beautiful!! I wouldn’t have a clue how to buy something like that (and the last time John was at a mall was probably 1999). You did well, girl!!
Natalie says
I hate getting dressed up because nothing ever looks right.
Art @ Fit at Fifty says
You mentioned Champaign in your blog,
Have you ever run the Chrisite Clinic Marathon there?
I have considered it, but never signed up for it.

I admit, I have it easy for big events, jacket, button up, tie, and out the door. Easy Peasy!!

You look cute! I feel the same way about dressing up, I even threatened to wear my running gear down the aisle! I have a question for you…how did you get your facebook badge to like your facebook page on the side of your blog?
Carrie @ FamilyFitnessFood.com says
You look so cute! I totally agree, I hate shopping for clothes. I went bra shopping yesterday and seriously just wanted to buy workout clothes only.
Lisa @ RunWiki says
You look gorgeous! I completely agree about civilian clothes…root canal please.
Maggie - Mag Mile Runner says
Cute dress! You look amazing!! I think we should get a back view though 🙂
I love shopping for regular clothes and putting together outfits 🙂 Lately I’ve been doing a lot of thrift shopping and clothing swaps with friends, so I’ve gotten quite a few “new” things for a great price!
Coy says
You look great in the dress!!
I’m horrible at dressing up. I’m either jeans and t-shirt or running . cycling gear. I have about 3-4 functions a year where I have to get super dressed up so I had a friend of mine who is great at fashion take me shopping, she picked a bunch of stuff out and I got three outfits, now I just put them on and go. Now I don’t have to fret over it. Until I need a new cycle of dresses soon 🙂

For a sec I thought you were going to be a tease and not show us the dress! I love it! 🙂 I don’t like clothes too much. That is why I have Loop Looks (Erin) dress me. Ha ha ha.
Which nutrition podcast did you listen to?
Kenley says
Damn, i was hoping for some pics of back there. lol. Just kidding! I think the dress looks very nice. Your work outs make mine look like a walk in the park, or a run in the park. SemperFi!
Jody - Fit at 55 says
I hardly ever dress up & with my bad feet, I really can’t do nice & cute shoes.. BUT YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
Erik says
The three of you look great!
Being a guy, it’s a lot easier: khakis, dress shirt, tie, nice socks, running shoes, done 🙂
cynthia says
The dress looks GREAT on you! The last time I got dressed up a 7/23/2011 for my son’s wedding. I had a hard time finding a dress. His rules: no white, no black and no cleavage. I found a pair of size 4.5 Jimmy Choo shoes for $85(!) @ nordstrom rack. He nixed those too! I finally found a dress that fit all the criteria. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9lHAkiYLu4o/T7Z2GPCH_KI/AAAAAAAAIGM/Fv7XFrdayVE/s1600/weddingPic.JPG I’ll probably never wear that dress again…
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
I hate getting dressed up! I also hate shopping for civilian clothes, ugh!
Your dress was pretty, though!
Ann says
Hate. It. With. A. Passion. I’ve always said if I can’t wear jeans and a t-shirt, I ain’t going! And, I’d rather dig a ditch that shop for anything, let alone CLOTHES! But the dress looks fab on you!
New Jersey Dry Cleaners says
Every time you glimpse at it, you relive the day when you walked
down the aisle putting on that attractive wedding gown and your groom and most people else
looked at you in awe and admiration. Some Houston dry cleaners restore any defects in the garments following the pretreatment.

You look incredible, truly beautiful!! I wouldn’t have a clue how to buy something like that. You did well, girl!!
