Here’s a cute video taken at Zooma Great Lakes that talks about the various reasons people run:
We all have our own reasons. In my case, I started running because I was concerned when my cholesterol test that came back borderline. Β With a genetic deck stacked against me complete with heart disease, obesity and Type II diabetes, I knew I needed to make my health a priority.
So I started running, just 10 minutes or so on the mill at the gym, as a warmup before I’d strength train. 10 minutes became 20, 2 miles became 3. I’d press the buttons, randomly changing speed and incline to head off boredom. I ran a 5k in 2000 then did not race again for years, although I kept my running date on the mill, eventually working up to 7 miles.
It wasn’t until 2007 that I took the plunge into longer distances. I ran my first half and full marathons that year. It was then that running became part of me. It’s simply who I am. I love the freedom of running outdoors. I feel powerful when I run fast. I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes with finishing a tough workout. Running is my ‘me’ time and my therapy couch. Β I love the discipline sticking to a training plan requires. I’m a positive role model for my kids. Running has given me a sense of confidence and optimism that has carried over into other areas of my life. Although I’m no longer chasing PRs and BQs, running gives me joy. Oh and my cholesterol came down nicely too. I hope to be running well into old age.
If you head over to the Zooma website, there’s a fun giveaway for two super-cute t-shirts. But be quick–it ends soon!

I’ve run for eternity, it seems – well over 35 years now (you’d think I’d know how to do this thing by now, huh? :)). I’ve just always said, just to simplify what can be a rather complication reason why I run, is that is just makes me a better ME. Running is just a detox for my sole. At least the good ones are! π

Your running story is really similar to mine. I used to just run a couple miles every other day and then slowly built up until I was obsessed with it.

I run because it feels wonderful to be outside, you can’t beat a good running friend, it has brought me opportunities I never thought possible, it is one of the few things that makes me proud of myself and because I never regret getting out there!

I run because I love it! I started in high school and have now been running over half my life with a few short time-outs due to injuries. I don’t even race much because I’m too competitive and when I train for a big race I usually end up hurt. Runners Run!!!
