I ventured into yoga the other day, my usual 30 minutes early in hopes of shoe-horning myself into a sliver of the much-coveted studio floor. Much to my surprise, I cracked the door to find the place empty. EMPTY! And cold. No blast furnace raging to melt our inhibitions and turn limbs to goo.
I quickly retreated to check the schedule. There IS yoga today right? Yep. So I staked out my spot and left for a brief flirtation with the treadmill, still not entirely sure what was going on.
I returned 5 minutes before class started to find maybe a dozen people vs. the usual 179. Still no blast furnace. 46% less Lululemon on parade. Only one guy and with no split shorts. Have I died and gone to heaven?
Where are the beautiful people that flock to SYNO? (that’s Sweat Your Nuts Off if you’re just joining us, my term, not theirs) I checked the schedule again: Hatha Yoga. Oh ok. In proper terms, SYNO yoga = Hot Vinyasa Flow. So we’re not going to be hot and we’re not going to flow to within an inch of heat-induced cardiac infarction? Maybe the beautiful Lulu peeps need the hot flow? Maybe this instructor sucks? I waited.
Turns out the instructor did not suck. She was quite excellent, actually. It was an added bonus not having my neighbor’s nether bits in perilous proximity. The yoga was challenging but not impossible. I think I found a love match. I’m a B-list yogi and proud of it! I wonder if instructors have class-size envy?
Are you picky about classes or have I cornered that market?
Who’s racing this weekend? Good luck to everyone doing CIM!

Glad to hear you had a good time at the yoga studio. Always nice when there is a little extra space. I go to a class called “Yoga Within Reach” on Satrudays. It is mostly gentle stretches with a few challenging poses thrown in. Not Vinyasa flow. And it is not heated, which I like. No races this weekend, however I start marathon training next week.

Thank you for making me laugh out loud today at that photo! I haven’t gone to a class in so long, my yoga involves a dvd and my living room rug : )

Someday I’ll try a yoga class, but first CrossFit.

I keep thinking I need to start doing yoga. But then I realize I’m too lazy to do yoga, so I never actually follow through. Maybe some day.

my studio does hot Viyasa and Hot hatha…I perfer the Hot Hatha 🙂
Kari @ Running Ricig says
I’ve never done hot Viyasa yoga because it kind of terrifies me, so if I go to yoga, it’s the B list 🙂

I am picky about instructors, time is short as it is, I dont like wasting time on a bad one. Get my sweat on and go home

You wouldn’t really even need a furnace doing hot yoga in Brisbane. Just schedule it for the middle of the day and there’s plenty of sweat to go round. The other class sounds much nicer – more space and less sweat. Glad you’ve found your match.

I feel kinda picky about yoga. I like different kinds, but it has to be relaxing at least at the end. The worst are the canned bodyflow classes, which my gym tries to pass off as yoga. Not yoga, people!:)

You should take this act on the road… I am sure you would have people laughing all over the world with your yoga class stories…. So funny.
Thanks for the wonderful giggle… and happy you found a class you like!

I am NOT a fan of Bikram yoga. Hatha yoga – yes. If I want to sweat and be too close to people’s “bits” I can sit in a hot tub. And sometimes the teachers with the smaller classes are the better teachers as they are not into the cult/ diva thing. I am NOT saying the popular teachers are, but there are a few out there….

I loved yoga when I took it…just a beginner/intermediate class at our YMCA. I’ve only had a couple different instructors, and they were both good. It’s been a few years since I’ve managed to make it to any scheduled class…maybe someday again.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Yeah for the B list! Glad you found a class you like!
I’m lucky to have found a no judgement Vinyasa class – sans heat…I don’t think I could handle it!

Oh, and I’m not racing this weekend, but I’m volunteering at an 8-hour adventure race! It’ll be fun, plus I get 50% off a future race. 🙂

Nice that you found a yoga class that works for you! I know I should go, but the few times I’ve tried I couldn’t even do the most basic moves without wanting to cry. Maybe I should give it another go…
Jill says
Not that I go to yoga, or probably ever will :), but I have to get to Body Pump at least 20 minutes early to snag a spot. And not only a spot, but weights and clips. If you get there 15 minutes early – so sorry, no weights for you!
Glad you found a new love!! Having body parts not shoved in your face is a good thing. Sometimes! 🙂

I am SURE that the class is the way to go for Yoga. For some reason a mat on the floor in front of the DVD player leads to the kids thinking I am their personal gym equipment. hah!

Never done yoga myself but it sounds like a good thing for core work. If I had abs like the guy in the pic I still don’t think I could wear a speedo to yoga 🙂
Amber @ ExSoyCise says
Hahaha I’m loving SYNO!! I have to say hot yoga is really my all time fave! I love dripping sweat all over the place and walking out looking like a wet rat! Glad you had a good class!
Anne says
I’ve never tried Bikram or SYNO yoga 😉 …I do Hatha yoga and enjoy the softness of the hard work. So I’m not surprised that you like it 🙂
Suzanne says
I’ve only been to one yoga class so I don’t have enough yoga class experience to know what I like or don’t like. Glad you’ve found your match!

So funny. I have yet to venture into hot yoga, but I can say that this time of year, the attendance numbers are down a bit. Just think–in January EVERY class can be crowded! ; )

I’m not that picky about classes, but I have been going to this one yoga class just because I LOVE the instructor and she’s not going to be teaching it anymore. The new teacher is a little cooky, but she’s better than another teacher that I’ve been to that races your through the poses with no breathing techniques or anything but “ok, next pose”.
