Happy Labor Day!
I hope you are all relaxing and enjoying your favorite activities with family and friends. We’re getting some residual effects from Hurricane Isaac, which amounts to high humidity, heavily overcast skies but so far little to no rain this far North.
We’ve taken advantage of the pool on more than one occasion so far this weekend.
On the injury front, things had been coming along beautifully and pain-free, however after yesterday’s 11-mile long run, my hip was the slightest bit tender for a short time. Maybe a hilly route was not the best choice? Too many miles too soon? Whatever the reason, I know I need to proceed with care.
For me August was a month of transition. Of winding down summer vacation and getting back to the school routine.
My workout schedule was shuffled: No more early morning workouts. Wah!
Thanks to injury, my workouts changed too: Much less running (none from 8/10-8/25), more cycling, a return to pool running and yoga. You do what you have to do right? I won’t lie there’s been a lot of frustration and maybe some cussing but I’m doing my best to work around this obstacle.
Going forward into September, I’m focusing on 3 things: Flexibility, Fun and Food
Flexibility: To help preserve my sanity (what little I have) through the schedule changes and frustrations with the injury, I created a new ritual: I opened an outdoor ‘yoga den’. I’ve been spending quality time out there daily and hope to continue as weather permits.
Thankfully I had no races planned for August.
I’d wanted to do a 5k or two in September but in light of the dicey hip, I haven’t committed to any and will focus on marathon training instead.
Fun!
- Pretty Muddy 5k September 15. I’ve had a mud run on my bucket list for awhile now but always worried I might get hurt and compromise marathon training. This one is kinder and gentler, with all of the fun! Can’t wait!
- Denver RnR September 22. I have no idea what kind of shape I’ll be in for this. But I’m still super psyched to go enjoy a girl’s weekend with my CO peeps.
Food: Late summer brings a bounty of veggies from our community garden. I typically cook and bake a ton but I’m planning to try more new recipes and be more adventurous in the kitchen. At the same time, I hope to be more mindful of what I’m throwing down. Having so many fresh veggies at my fingertips leaves me no excuses!
What are your goals for September? Any fun races coming up?

I have a couple of races coming up in September. On 9/15 we are doing the Color Me Rad 5K as a family and I will be doing a 10K on 9/22. Glad to hear that you are making progress. I love your determination! Have a great Labor Day!

Hey, coincidentally, I’m doing Denver RnR too! 😉 Can’t wait to see you and get all caught up. I ran a half marathon today and really had a very hard time…you may have to wait an hour or so for me after. Horrible stomach problems today :(. I am envious of your 11 pain free miles…but I hope they continue to build and you are back on board for a great MCM!!

It’s good to hear that your running’s progressing nicely. If only our injuries and illnesses came with a green light notification that we were fine to push ourselves hard again. It would take all those pesky questions and doubts out of the equation.

Enjoy all the CSA experimenting! Glad you’re feeling mostly better… I’ve been the same with my shin, I increase and feel little twinges, and then wonder if I should back off again… I’m trying to be conservative and hope I can keep injury away. Enjoy your Labor day!

Yea for the harvest! We’ve got tomatoes but little else. Sigh…I don’t have a green thumb.
I’m pretty excited about September. I have the Prison Break, an obstacle/mud run on Sept. 15 and the Berryman Adventure Race the following weekend. Berryman is the only thing that has saved me from post-race depression after last weekend’s 24 hour race.

Nice you have been able to run pain free! Good idea with the flexibility. I keep saying I need to start doing core work but don’t until my back starts hurting.
Love fresh veggies too but I’m too lazy to keep up with a garden 🙂

Sounds like some fun races! Our next race is our first marathon on September 30th, it’s getting close!

I think we’re getting the residuals of Isaac today and tomorrow. So much rain!!
I’m so glad your hip is feeling better!!!!

Glad you’re making progress with that cranky hip! I’m looking forward to September for cooler temps and ZOOMA Cape Cod 🙂

I am a fan of pain free! September …working on building mileage back up for Long Beach half (oct 7) I had a really hilly 10k planned for next week but decided to pass on it to help my recovery from groin injury progress.

Yay on the (almost) pain-free 11 miles! We have the North Face same weekend as your mud run – fun, fun!!

Glad you’re getting back, even if it’s not exactly where you want to be, running-wise. Cutting back is never easy but hopefully the other workouts + yoga will keep you strong and occupied!

those seem like great goals! I am also focused on enjoying a variety of new recipes! It’s strange how I eat the same thing all the time without even realizing it
