The other day I boxed up some clothing to be donated. Among the items on the chopping block:
2 pairs of jeans: the rise was just too high by today’s standards. Plus I just bought a new pair over the weekend. Out with the old, in with the new, right?
1 plaid shirt: Saving in case I ever needed it again for a Halloween costume. Oy.
2 mini skirts: Mini to me is just above the knee. So old the rise was high and tight. Ouch.
1 shirt: I last remember wearing to ride a mechanical bull in Grapevine Texas…8 years ago.
2 pairs of white capris: I’ve got 2 other pairs and these hadn’t been worn in…well who knows when?
Million dollar question: Why was I keeping this stuff hanging around so long?
Answer: Because I don’t feel like I ‘wore them enough’. They were not worn out and didn’t appear out of style until I tried them on.
These jeans are clearly worn out, yet they still reside in my closet.
We hang onto things for so many reasons. Keeping clothes in various sizes is common. I tend to be more emotional about things than the Caveman. He’ll toss away things he’s not using without a second thought. I leave them hanging while I deliberate, and then forget about it. Those skirts have been in the ‘purging on-deck circle’ for years.
I’m the same way with workout clothes I really don’t get rid of anything unless it’s worn out…or incredibly ugly (hello race shirts). In my defense, unlike my ‘civilian’ clothes, my workout wear typically doesn’t languish unworn.
According to Feng Shui experts, decluttering creates energy while clutter saps energy because one must ‘manage/maintain’ the clutter.Β There, I feel the energy flowing already. Now to deal with those purses…
Do you hang onto clothes/things longer than you should?
Does your closet need purging?
Mizuno giveaway ends tonight!
Meandering Matt says
My closet and dresser need serious purging. My closet is full of things I’ll probably never wear again…like ties. My dresser drawers are so full, I can’t hardly open/close them. I purge about once a year, but it seems to just grow exponentially to what I purged.
Kari @ Running Ricig says
I love cleaning out my closet. I always wonder where the clothes came from since I don’t really shop that often. Mike tried to clean out his closet once, but then realized if he got rid of too much he wouldn’t have anything to wear. The man is a minimalist.
Katie @wishandwhimsy says
I hang on to clothes too long. I just recently purged a TON of clothes that didn’t fit because of losing weight and toning up. It felt SO good to get rid of things that were just hanging around. Why don’t we do this more often?!

Fare thee well, mom jeans!!
Argh, got to tackle my closet.
hikermom says
My closet always needs a purge, but I try to do it a couple times a year. I agree that after I declutter, I feel like a weight has been lifted. I should go do it right now:) Nah, maybe I will go for a run first.

2 weeks ago I finally got rid of items in my closet I haven’t worn for 2 years (since I have moved here). 3 bags of crap later – I told myself if I could remember something yesterday in those bags I really think I should keep – I would take it out. I can’t remember anything.
My reason for purging, though? To make room for my items after I hit up the Lord and Taylor sale π
Amber (@ExSoyCise) says
Good for you girl! I got rid of 5 bags of clothes this year and I am STILL working on getting rid of more things I don’t wear. So hard to let go of things, but feels great when you do!

Good for you for getting rid of some things! I love to purge. It does make me feel lighter. I need to right now. I have a lot ot stupid junk sitting around.

I am fairly good at pitching clothes I don’t wear. I hate clutter, so a nice, organized closet suits me. Now Mr. Zippy on the other hand…
Jill says
Miss Zippy needs to come to my house and de-clutter for me!
I have a closet-full of size 2s I should really purge cuz they’re never going to fit again. Whhhaaaa!
Mandy says
Nice purge! I really need to purge as most of my wardrobe is at least 5-10 years old…
Courtney says
I just cleaned out my closet this weekend… and this is so true! Between the hubs and I we had like 3 BIG trash bags of clothes and stuff to give away. Crazy!
Char says
I generally have a purge once every year or so and if I haven’t worn it since the last purge then out it goes. It’s such a cathartic experience and I give the clothes away to a family who really enjoy getting my throw outs. Who knew there’s be others with less style than me?!
Andrea says
I definitely hang on to things longer than I should. But my husband is way worse. I feel like I should have gotten my money’s worth out of them. And the shoes I have are Hokas.
Melissa @ runscootsrun.blogspot.com says
Congrats on the purge…that is something that I definitely need to do. I still have things from high school (I am 28) that I think I keep around just because I am happy I still fit into them, lol!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
My years of living in NYC cured me of holding on to too many things – no closet space π Now I’m ruthless with clothes – I go through everything once a season….now if I could only get my husband on board!
Charissa says
I totally keep things I shouldn’t – so I’ve been going through my closet every few weeks. It seems that I need time in between to decide I need to get rid of it. π
Johann says
I am very bad with this and sit with heaps of old clothes. I also wear my clothes for years and years and literally wait for it to fall apart.
Amy says
Good for you! It’s on my list this summer…I’m trying to decide what to do with my purse, resell!? Any suggestions?
Mike says
Im horrible about chucking things. This post gives me inspiration to at least chuck the ugly race shirts I won’t wear. Thanks!
Tink says
OMG! I have so many potential halloween costumes hanging around that I’m set for the rest of my life!
Carilyn Johnson (@CarilynJohnson) says
Mechanical in bull? That is too funny! And funnier that you are reminded of it because of the shirt! Burn it! π I need to clean out every closet in my house, but funnily enough, I keep coming up with more “important” things to do, like buying garden gnomes. And watering my cacti. π
Elle says
I don’t keep things longer than I should – since we moved onto the boat I have learned the joy of minimalism! Especially where clothing is concerned.
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
I definitely hold onto things too long, we have gone through our closet recently but we have yet to donate the clothes! They’re just sitting in bags in another room, ugh we are horrible!
lindsay says
i continually try to do this. each time i can usually part with a few items, but for a lot of it i start thinking “oh but i love this shirt” (even though i haven’t worn it in 5 years) and “i’ll wear it again now that i remember i haven’t”. …clearly. π
i have been saying i need to purge the house. too much STUFF! good for you for doing it! i know they say to set stuff aside in a box and come back to it in 3 months. whatever you didn’t pull from the box to use in those 3 months should go straight to the goodwill, don’t even open it. now if only i’d actually make that box… π
