I’ve taken 3 weekly Vitamin D mega doses so far since being diagnosed deficient at my annual physical. Β To those of you who questioned the 50k mega-dose, know that I was taking 5,000 IUs daily and was still coming up way short. Crazy, I know.
Effects?
Nothing noticeable the first week. But last week and just this morning, I’ve begun to hear the angels sing during my runs. This is huge as my running angels have been on extended sabbatical and I’ve been able to hear nothing over my wheezing and desperate gasps for air. Last week it was as if someone flipped a switch and I was able to process the air I was taking in once again. I ran a good 30 seconds per mile faster without even trying. Numbers on my Garmin appeared that I was sure were a mistake. It was as if someone had hit rewind and taken me back to those cherished, golden days when 9 minute miles were conservative marathon pace.
Granted I have a long way to go. And I fully accept it if I don’t make it all the way back to where I was. But, dare I say it? Running is starting to become joyful again. My Newtons click against the pavement in a certain way they hadn’t when I was plodding and dying.
I also need to work on the mental side. My brain was so used to dealing with not being able to hit paces that I’d virtually given up on speed work. I need to reopen my mind to the possibility of running fast again. Because physically I am coming back.
For the first time in a long time, I am hopeful for the upcoming Marine Corps Marathon training cycle.

I didn’t realize just how important getting enough vitamin D in was until I was getting ready to move to Michigan and my Florida doctor gave me a whole talk about making sure I upped my dosage so I didn’t get SAD during the winters. Since then I’ve known so many people that have traced their health problems to the vitamin deficiency. So glad you were able to identify the problem and fix it.

So glad to hear that you are feeling better! I’ve been going through something similar (though my issue was iron) and it’s been so nice in the last week or so to finally feel like I am getting back to somewhere close to “normal.”

Awesome you have your running mojo back! I guess I’ll get my blood tested again and actually take the vitamin D this time if it’s still low. I could use an extra 30 seconds per mile speed up.

Great job! Glad to hear you Vit D levels improved. Try pairing up Vit D with foods rich in Boron (i.e., almonds, avocados and peanut butter) to better metabolize your D!
