A fitness bucket list: do you have one?
The first time I thought of fitness in terms of a bucket list was back in 2007 when I decided I needed to run ‘A’ marathon…as in one and done…to fill mine. 6 marathons and counting, we all know how that panned out.
Lately I’ve been thinking again about fitness goals and things I’d like to achieve in this lifetime. So here we go, my fitness bucket list:
- Boston check x2
- Chicago checkx2
- New York City will happen in 2013 or 2014 thanks to the grandfathered lottery
- London
- Berlin
Other bucket list races:
- Marine Corps Marathon Registered for 10/28/12!
- Nike Women’s
- Big Sur
- Disney I assumed the kids would get into Disney and this would be a family trip. Alas the kids are over Disney and it never panned out. If I want a Disney race, this must happen on my own.
- Run a relay check! Madison to Chicago just last weekend.
- Duathlon I’ve been harping on this one for years. While I’ve become MUCH more confident on the bike and ride regularly, I haven’t made this a priority. As a result, I’ve got conflicts with all local duathlons this year. Sigh.
Run in as many states as possible–here’s how that’s coming along:
Run as part of a charity team
Chicago Marathon 2010 for the Lupus Association
Switching Gears: One of the most important things I believe we can do as fitness/health enthusiasts is mentor and share our passion.
- Coach figure skating Check. I love it and plan to continue for as long as possible.
- Wellness Coaching Check. Certified earlier this year
- Personal Training Looking at programs now
Curiosities
CrossFit fascinates me. I’m riveted to the Reebok CrossFit games. Every. Single. Time. It’s on TV. But the excuse of marathon training and reluctance to get overly sore or injured have kept me from it so far. I will try it–soon!
How will you fill your fitness bucket?

Running a marathon was on my fitness bucket list too. I ran one last October and am now planning on running one again in 2013! I caught the bug. 🙂

As I get ready to go for My First Run In Three Damn Months, I finally feel like I can enjoy this question. Maybe I shouldn’t be over-confident….
1. Qualify for Boston–overshadows all else. For now.
2. Run the Pikes Peak Ascent.
3. Run some other cool mountain races in CO, especially the Imogene Pass Run.
4. Be a Girls on the Run Mentor. I also wish there were a program like this for boys. Boys need mentors and inspiration too. They also need strong women in their lives.
5. Run a marathon in Ireland.
6. Do some fell running in Ireland and/or the UK.
7. Run until I can’t anymore. And then walk.

Great job! I just blogged about my Bucket List today, too.
I’m so ready to try Cross Fit. I actually just pulled up the schedule of the box (I’m chuckling that I use that term) near me. Ready to try their intro class.

Do that triathlon before the summer is over.
Keep doing a few tris a summer
Bike a century
Learn to change a flat tire
Race (a marathon?) in Ireland
Mt. Desert Island Marathon or half
Race in more states (I notice you are missing Vermont.)

I admit that my list only has one item right now and that’s to run a marathon. Once I check that off in December then I’ll figure out where to go from there.
You’ve got a lot of great races and other events on your list!

Great bucket list!
I have mine on pinterest.com/taraburner

Funny, as I get older (gasp!), I’m finding my race times aren’t as meaningful to me as they once were but my overall fitness and how I look is starting to scream at me. I’m thinking more bootcamp and crossfit in my life….I’m going to hook up with a gym in my neighborhood once I get over the next two races….I’m so afraid of how sore I’ll be the first couple months. But just I hear you get less sore as you progress…just like running. At least that’s what I’m hoping :).

Those are some awesome goals, I’d love to run some of those big marathons, too! I’m holding out for the Little Miss to be in elementary school, when we’ll hopefully be able to start putting the money that was spent on preschool toward a race + vacation fund. Right now, my only fitness bucket list goal is to pay the motivation I have found in other runners and bloggers forward and help even just ONE person make a major life transformation.

Great looking list! I definitely have the majors on mine – checking off two of those this year!
You will LOVE a duathlon. I promise you! Then we just need to get you in the pool. hehe

My sister in law is training for a 100 mile ultra and she’s added cross fit to her weekly activities and loves it. You might give it a try!
Hikermom says
What an amazing list and so many great accomplishments! Let me know when you make your way to race in WA:)
katie says
I love your bucketlist. It’s so much fun to see what everyone else is aspiring to do. I might have to add somethings to my list after looking at yours!!
Suzy says
You have a great bucket list! You are well on your way to completing more of your list.
K says
I don’t have the major marathons on my list at all….but I admit I’m intrigued by the Antarctica Marathon and it should be on my bucket list.
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
I like how you wrote out specific races… I should add that to mine. I have the same excuses about Crossfit, but really need to check it out. I saw that our local one has a free trail… no more excuses! You saw mine, I blogged about it last week: http://www.mommyrunfast.com/2012/06/11/fitness-bucket-list-and-a-winner/
Meghan Rene @ Uncooked & UnWalked says
Great bucket list! I need to write one down too. I am so happy to hear you ran for Lupus! My mommy has Lupus and I often participate in their walks 🙂
Excuse me while I go fantasize about running in London.
Sandy says
Great list and we share some of the same ideas!
1. Qualify for Boston
2. Run Chicago Marathon
3. Big Sur Marathon
4. Eugene Oregon Marathon
5. Goody Challenge
6. Now that I have a bike, I want to take a stab at a triathlon for the first time!
gingerfoxxx says
you are seriously kicking butt in the “run all 50” department! I also dream of doing the big five some day 🙂 And an ultra.

I love this list – I keep eyeballing the Disney races but can’t quite coordinate them either!
I’ve been skirting around the periphery of a duathlon for months – need to bite the bullet and make it happen!!
Mandy says
Great bucket list! Every time I read a cool race recap, I think, I must do that race, and it goes on my not-yet-set-in-stone-or-on-paper bucket list. Some day, I need to actually write it out!
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
Great fitness bucket list! I just posted, briefly, about this today too! I definitely want to try to run a race in every state, too!

My 16yo daughter is racing the Disney Half Mary this year. I’m racing too. They never get too old for the mouse house.
Carly says
That is a great list!!!! I would like to run a marathon in 4 hours.
Carilyn Johnson (@CarilynJohnson) says
Great bucket list, Marcia! We did Disney as a family reunion, and it was one of the best vacations EVER! All the kids were pretty much over Disney, but loved it since the adults did all the rides with them – so it seemed more “adult”.
Elle says
This was such a fun read, Marcia. I love seeing what is on other people’s lists! Thanks for sharing.
Lisa @ RunWiki says
You have done so many amazing thing already.. look at all of those states.. woot! I love that you coach figure skating, so different than running, so exciting. My friend Kate Horan is a figure skating judge, she says it’s difficult because she wants everyone to win.. understandable. Nice list!
Mike says
Looks like you have a nice bucket list. I guess I really don’t have one except to complete a full IM. I’m a good planner for about a year at a time. Maybe it’s time to create a bucket list.
BDD says
I like bucketlists, I need to write mine down
Tink says
You HAVE to do Disney! It is indescribable how magical it is! Also, ever thought of doing the Honolulu? I was a supporter for a friend who did it and it was soooo cool!
Beth says
I’ve also been looking into Wellness Coaching and Personal Training programs. Which Wellness Coaching cert did you get?

my bootcamp i’ve been going to is cross-fit-esque. the guy is working on his CF affiliation and is currently CF level 1 certified, so it’s getting there. it’s TOUGH, but so much fun! maybe you can find a place near you that offers a similar deal? this guy has “functional fit” classes throughout the week and you can go to any ones you want (while paying a monthly rate). it’s pricier than a regular gym but if you can find one that’s semi affordable that helps!
