I rarely, if ever, have dreams about running. But I had a dream last night where I got to my race (the half I’m running tomorrow) and realized I’d brought no gels, Accelerade or fuel belt. I was pretty horrified until I realized there was a full-service cafeteria near the gear check so I ordered up a stack of pancakes and went from there. I have no idea how the race of my dreams turned out but I did consult the trusty online dream analyzer to try to draw some insights. According to The Curious Dreamer, forgetting or being unprepared for something could indicate:
- A fear of losing control or a fear of failure
- Feeling that you have too much on your mind and are afraid you’ll forget something
- How important it is to you to remember the thing you forgot in the dream, and your subconscious is just giving you a reminder (for example, dreaming that you forgot next week’s final exam that is very important to you)
I suppose all of them are valid possibilities, although this was a last-minute addition to my schedule and is by no means a goal race. ย I think I’m going to go pack up my fuel right now.
Have you had running-related dreams?
Are you racing this weekend?
Laura says
I dream about running all the time. It is always the same thing…I want to run and my legs just won’t move.
I wake up thinking I can’t move either.
Welcome to my head. ๐
Kari @ Running Ricig says
I don’t think I’ve ever dreamed about running, but I do have a dream dictionary by my bed for all of the weird stuff that goes on in my head.
Coy says
Ya know…I don’t think I ever have had a dream about running. Odd right?? Considering it’s such a huge part of my life. I do have dreams about being naked at school and forgetting to go to class.
Jill says
Hum….I’m sure I have had running dreams, but I don’t recall them at the moment. I took a sleep and dreams class in college, it was really fascinating….but I remember thinking that all those things had nothing to do with me – ha.
Good luck with the half this weekend. You’re a half running machine! ๐
xo

I have running related dreams all the time, sometimes good and sometimes not so good. I hate the one where I over sleep and can’t find the starting line, which seems to visit my dreams often.
Good luck this weekend! Are you running the Magellan Half?
Molly says
My running dreams are always about being late for the race, and no matter what I do I can’t get to the starting line. I think it equals fear of failure.
Good Luck this weekend and Happy Mother’s Day!!!

I remember having a dream once that I was really lost on a marathon course, this course also went through the inside of a house.. :/ weird.
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
I think I have had running related dreams, but I can’t really remember what they were about now. I know I have had swimming dreams where I was at a meet and after I dove into the pool I couldn’t move! I just stayed there and couldn’t go anywhere. Weird!
Gingerfoxxx says
Now that i think about it, i never have running dreams! If i am running in a dream, its from a zombie or a murderer….does that count?
hikermom says
I always wonder what my dreams mean. The only running related dream I have is when I am playing soccer (used to play when I was a kid) and I am running super slow-mo to get the ball and everyone else is running fast. So frustrating! It’s as if I don’t even know how to run. Good idea getting your racing fule ready now:)
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
I often dream about a race the night before, usually I dream that my alarm went off and I’m getting ready to go, then I wake up and realize it’s only 3am… this repeats a few times. I guess I’m paranoid I’ll sleep through a race!
marlene says
I don’t think I’ve ever had a distinct running dream like that! Lately I keep waking up from a dream when I am convinced the dog is in bed with us. It’s bizarre. I think my subconscious wants him to sleep in the sheets with us. hehe
Have a great race tomorrow!
RunInBoise says
I think before all my big races I have some sort of running dream. I had some strange ones last month before my half marathon.
Erin says
Good luck tomorrow! Hope it is a fun race! I am racing a 10k although not sure how it is going to go with the week I have had.
I dream about running pretty often but they are usually good dreams. ๐
misszippy1 says
Classic anxiety dreams! Yes, I have them now and again when it comes to races..oversleeping and missing the start, not being able to get anywhere in the race, etc.
Good luck this weekend!
Elle says
Haven’t ever dreamed of running… unless you count running away from a bad guy and legs not working! I had that a few times years ago.
I am running my first half on Sunday so if I have any bad dreams now on Saturday night, I will be looking for you! Kidding, Marcia… but did you pack your fuel?
Mandy says
I love that you just bought pancakes at the start line! Awesome!
I actually had running dreams last night about my run this morning. It was strange because I was just meeting a couple of friends, no race or anything. As we were running – it came up that each of them also had dreams about it! LOL!
Andrea says
I haven’t had any running dreams lately but I am pretty sure I will tonight. I usually dream about the last few things I read or watch on tv.
Carrie@familyfitnessfood.com says
I have those unprepared dreams all the time. STRESS!!!
Good luck tomorrow!
Mike says
Funny! I’ve had a few tri dreams that were weird, stressful, but weird.
Black Knight says
Interesting post. Often I dream, before a race, to forget something of important for the run despite I prepare everything already the evening before.
I hope you have run a good half.
Half-Crazed Runner says
I don’t remember ever dreaming about running, but I remember my brother telling me someone on his track team at Villanova was injured and out for months – when he started competing again, he won every race. During an interview, his teammate said that he just dreamed of running, the whole time he was injured! …I gotta start having running dreams!
Meghan Rene says
I’ve had race related dreams – but never analyzed them.
Um – I did laugh a lot about the pancakes part. Totally something I would want to do.
bobbi says
My pre-race dreams almost invariably involve me getting lost on the course.
Can’t wait to hear all about your race – weather was a little nutso Saturday…
