Oh wait, it already did. Well just a few random things about April before I jump in to May. For me, April was about baby steps. I snagged the graphic below from my friend Jodi’s board on Pinterest. It is a great reminder that change does not have to be huge….that even small tweaks, done consistently, add up to great things. Here are some of the ways I tweaked April’s workouts:
I added back a spinning class once a week. Although the instructor continues to call me the ‘new face’ I’ve been there every week. Not a huge deal but wait no it is a big deal.
Especially because I’ve continued to fit in the strength and core work I added in March.
I also finally returned to doing speed work after a long layoff compliments of last fall’s partially ruptured hamstring fiasco. ย I’m gasping and struggling with it but I’m doing it. That counts for something right?
Going forward into May
The plan is to continue with all of the above plus:
Start incorporating a weekly double run day to prep for the relay in June. This one scares me. Typically I don’t even run on consecutive days so this will be a challenge.
Make it to one yoga class/week. ย I actually got a jump start on this last week. There were 54 people in the studio, which is a new record. The instructor kept squeezing us in, saying she’d turn nobody away. It was outrageously tight in there. I fought the urge to roll up my mat and scram. It turned out to be a great class. It was HARD!
So just 2 tweaks to the schedule for May. I suspect I’m not alone when I say May is crazy busy here. From end-of-school stuff, social obligations, ice show rehearsals and a race or 2 every weekend, the plate is overflowing. But in a good way. Plus once the kids are out of school in June, the schedule will change yet again.
For those that asked me about the woman who squatted down to read my bib at last weekend’s 5k, the last time I saw her was about 3 feet after the starting line. I got off ahead of her and never saw her again.
Last chance! My cool giveaway ends tonight!
How is ย May shaping up for you?

Awesome goals, Marcia! They sound a lot like mine. I’ve been trying to keep a speed work session in each week, and really want to make it to yoga just one night! Definitely not okay to keep calling you the new face… I’m making a mental note never to assume I know who is new as I start teaching. ๐

I can’t believe it is already May. This month I am going to try to stick to my healthy living plan. Diet is my number one goal. I am always good about fitness and getting a workout in, but my nutrition and diet is what I struggle with. This month I am going to focus on eating clean and staying focused!

I am also trying to squeeze in yoga once a week, and some cross-training for May…it’s so hard to find the time!!

Is it May already? YIKES!
Great “small steps”!!! I’m starting double-run days next weekend for relay-prep as well. Maybe we can help each other on those!

The double runs are scary, ut so many people swear by them…
Julia @ Pain, Pride, Perseverance says
yes! MAY is definitely CRAZY busy. i can barely believe its already here. I feel like time is flying by and in no time i will be moving this fall…nuts!
good luck this month ๐ such a good idea to plan the double runs for the relay! i may steal that idea as well!

My mental breakdown with being busy beings in June – not May! I am grateful for that because then every weekend until the end of August is races, weddings, showers and bachelorette parties. Not terrible things but lots of travel!
I find if I don’t do a yoga class a week I am more sore. Stick to it and never leave the class!

May will be about maintaining my injury-recovery mojo without sinking into boredom and giving up on the whole thing. (That sums up the aim of a whole bunch of smaller specific goals!) I, too, am looking forward to getting back to yoga, or something like it.

Here’s to a great May! I hope it is everything and more that you expect. I know I will be rooting for you to hit all your goals!

Those double runs sound tough!
All your tweaks sound good – and you’re right it all adds up! Nice job!

So we’re on the same page today, no? Keep up the good work with training, even while you move into the crazy month. With the double–do the longer one in the a.m. and the shorter one in the p.m.–always makes it more likely to happen that way. I really love doubles!
Kari @ Running Ricig says
yay for two-a-days! I kind of love them.

Wow, this will be a great month! Annoying that the spin instructor calls you a new face. 2-a-days, you rock. I typically don’t run 2 days in a row either. Way to get in your cross-training:)

Way to kick bib-peekers butt!!
I’ve been doing 2-a-days on Tuesdays for a couple months (a drastic cut-back from pre-foot injury when I did 3x/week); as long as you give yourself some rest and eat a few carbs between runs, you’ll be good! ๐

Sounds like you have a great plan for May! I’m focusing on 30 minutes of yoga each day and surviving racing every single weekend this month.

May is a very busy month for sure! Lacrosse games
and practices, little league (although Alex is sidelined
with his broken arm), end of school events etc. Oh, and
me starting a new (back to the old) job with a different schedule
where I work day shifts, a first for me! Race-wise, I have my
Mountain Goat 10 mile hilly race next Sunday & a hilly 8k 2 weeks
later. Hoping to add in more swimming each week & outdoor cycle

This time of year is sooooooo crazy! Good for you going to spinning – I think it is so hard – but I know it is great for you. And I am way too stiff to do yoga – I generally tip over like a tree ๐
Mike says
Sounds like a good plan for May!
Tink says
Wow, that is a chock full month! Best of luck, if you can do even half of all that stuff, you will be Super Woman!

Busy month! I haven’t done two-a-days regularly in a while, but used to do several a week and loved it. The second run always felt like a bonus run. ๐
Travel Spot says
Wow, that is a lot of stuff going on! I have only done two a days as a run in the morning and a run/walk interval with a friend in the evening, so it wasn’t two intense workouts. I have a relay this weekend, so maybe I should have done some two a days? Hm. Maybe I should have thought of that earlier!
