Today’s Health Activists Writer’s Month Challenge is to talk about your writing style.
Mine can best be summed up as seat of the pants. Words just pretty much flow and if they don’t, I don’t blog. After college, I started my career as an advertising copywriter and moved on to technical writing then editing, before getting into a management role. While I love to write, I found corporate life and the bureaucracy that often goes along with it stifled my free spirit.
Probably in rebellion to the grueling rewrites and edits I did in my professional life, for me blogging entails little to no planning or premeditation: my blather goes straight to the keyboard. I may (or not) have a very rough idea of what I’ll blog about for the week, but that is extremely subject to change. Nothing is set in stone around here. Nothing. Title usually comes first, but that too is subject to change.
The ‘magic’ happens here at the dining room table at Casa Teamarcia. Always early in the morning before the kiddos are up and I don my mom cape. There is always coffee and water involved.
The dogs distract me a bunch, but that’s not all bad because getting up to move and stretch is always a good thing. I keep my body fit with healthy food and exercise and my mind stimulated with almost daily writing, not to mention the social interaction and friendships this blog has enriched my life with.
There’s still half a month left! Join the Health Writer’s Challenge here!
Champion giveaway ends tonight!
Good luck to all of this weekend’s racers! Run strong–run smart!

My uncle is a professional writer (books, newspapers, etc). He said that he strives to not have a style when he writes.
I seem to gravitate to irony or sarcasm.

I’m the same way, Marcia -I just write about whatever comes up that morning. I’m also a little lax on editing, so I often see mistakes weeks later 🙁

Aww, your dogs are so cute. I blog about the same way. In the morning, with some coffee, before the kids are up.

I’m pretty boring so I usually wait until something happens that is worth writing down, even then it’s not that exciting. That said, I’m surprised at how much I’ve blogged since I started this a couple years ago.

I like your writing style. I feel like you write like you actually ARE–there’s no pretension but there are also no grammar mistakes!–and your humor is always pitch perfect.

This is a great post! Stopping by from the HAWMC challenge.

Like Terzah said, I get a real sense of “you” through your writing style and I really appreciate that. I like to have a general plan of posts for the week, but then change it as needed if the words aren’t flowing.

I’m the same way. If nothing inspires me from daily life…nothing gets written. My only planned post is my weekly training update, which I’m sure most people find boring. LOL!

I am surprised to hear the title comes first for you! That seems to be what I struggle with the most. But I just blab it out too. Sometimes I have so much to say that I have a backlog of posts. That has not happened too much lately 😉

30 posts in 30 days???? Um, I’m so lucky if I get one out a week. I just don’t flow with the words well like you do, it takes me hours sometimes to write one post. I’ll have to pass at this challenge, but I’ll keep reading your blog, cuz I love it! 🙂
Char says
I’m the same – just write about what’s been happening or funny little events that have made me laugh. I hardly ever re-read or edit and it’s no shock if there’s an error or two. I know what you mean about writing keeping you sharp. My mind has become clearer and I’m able to express myself a little better (I think) than when I first started blogging.

CUTE DOGGIES!!!!!!!!!! Ah – pictures of cute dogs on sunny days make me so happy. Time for some coffee now…

Your dogs are very cute!
I definitely agree with the “seat of your pants” style. I sometimes have a plan, but then I forget and write the post weeks later than I originally wanted. I try to make sure there are no spelling or blatantly obvious grammatical errors, though.
