Last night, I was in the school parking lot, about to head in to a meeting when it dawned on me the meeting wasn’t until next Monday. I sat there grateful the revelation came before I did something even more foolish. This was par for the course with the way things have gone recently. I’m slipping back into a scattered, procrastinating, seat of the pants way of life. In the past week:
- my inbox has exploded.
- Β I’ve missed deadlines.
- Β allowed the kitchen counters to amass junk mail and school backpack detritus.
- Its ice show season.
- I filed for landmark status on my laundry pile AKA Mt. Washmore.
- I’m delinquent in making doctor, dentist and eye doc appointments.
- My hair stylist has put out an APB for my whereabouts.
- As for my annual mammo, lets not even go there. I sure haven’t.
With May fast approaching, events, commitments and time demands will only increase.
Yet, despite lots going on and more ball dropping than you can shake a stick at, Β all is not lost. What I realized, and maybe I’m late to the party, is that when one area of life is not going well, others are:
- Workouts are going well. I’m feeling strong.
- I’ve returned to speed work after a long layoff compliments of that pesky ruptured hamstring.
- Maybe this is a fringe benefit of a busted Garmin, but I’m enjoying running again, after way too long.
- I’m not making the best food choices in the world (thank you Easter) but not the worst either and I’ve gained no weight.
To me, the positives balance out the negatives associated with being overwhelmed.
So are my day-to-day duties sliding because I’m focussing TOO MUCH on working out?
Or am I compensating for falling short in other areas of my life? I suppose it boils down to priorities.
Do you notice a give and take? Where one facet of your life goes well while another does not?

my household duties are RARELY in check. I just have something to blame it on when I’m training hard π

Ditto the hair thing for me!
I forgot a dear friend’s AA anniversary and her son’s 2nd birthday.
Other than that, I am hanging on by my fingernails… I have taken on too much! But I can see a light at the end of the tunnel (hope it’s not a train!)
I think we are all just human…make mistakes… win some and lose some. π
I saw a coffee table in a store the other day that was made in 2 pieces – yin and yang. kinda cute.

I hear you, Marcia! My in-laws come to visit tomorrow, and my house is a disaster, laundry is piling up, and my oven is broken and no time to get it fixed (giving my MIL an excuse to comment on me not cooking π ). But everyone is happy and healthy, so I just walk by the mess with my eyes closed!

Now that I’m officially old, you wouldn’t believe how many things have slipped my mind. Just the other day I was going to B’s state band competition and missed my exit and ended 30 miles past it in Wyoming. And I need a lip wax BAD…it’s growing into my mouth!

Sounds like you need a secretary :-).

funny, i was just thinking i am caught up on my blogging and reading but my house is a wreck. and is going to be a priority today. π

I am dropping way too many balls as I juggle with a gazillion tasks. I’m trying to stay afloat with work stuff anda laundry cos’ those two things affect not just me but other people. Needless to say, I haven’t ran in a way.
Tink says
There is wrong with prioritizing workouts over everything else! Maybe that landmark status will get you a tax break π
Kari @ Running Ricig says
Sometimes I feel like if I have particularly bad days, that’s when I have great workouts, because it helps me feel sane. I don’t know about the other way around.
Karen says
You are singing my song! I am able to get in every workout on my training schedule without fail but all that household stuff – forget it. I think I am waiting for a day (or week) off to really conquer it. LOL only because I know that will never happen. Not that I am proud but good to know I am not the only one π

I legit died laughing @ Mt Washmore – I certainly have one of those going on. I totally feel you on all levels – I don’t have kids… but I travel a lot for work (sales) and balancing every day chores, family, friends, etc. just gets crazy.
Welcome to the season of no free weekends! Oi!!!
To me – if working out makes you feel better – than it should be a priority!!
Jamie @ couchtoironwoman says
Don’t worry about it! We all fall behind every now and then! My husband and I are always behind on cleaning, but we get it done when it absolutely has to be done!
At least you have made working out happen and that definitely counts for something π
Coy says
I hear ya! As a fellow mother of three, I HEAR YA! Last night I had a panic attack, all three of mine are going on a field trip today and I needed to pack lunches. My countertops over flowith and dont think the husband minds for a second π
Unfortunately I think I’m a little set back on my workouts too. Oh well. π
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
There is definitely an ebb and flow around my house but working out is always a priority…otherwise I’m cranky and nobody wants to deal with that! LOL!
Laura says
Oh yes, I find other things slipping, especially in marathon training. I know it’s only going to get busier with older children and more on the to-do list. I’m doing okay with the balance right now, but I have had those weeks!
Char says
This is certainly true of me. So far this year all I’ve been able to do is work, work, sleep, exercise a little and work some more. But the silly season happened to finish just this week (finally on top of my orders – a big high five for me!) and already I’m feeling more balance and order in my life.
Mandy says
I understand the feeling!!! I’m glad you’re enjoying running again and that your workouts are going well!
Travel Spot says
Hahaha! Mt. Washmore. I love it! It’s hard to keep a life balance! You are doing fine. The laundry is not that important. When you feel good in one area, right now fitness, the others will follow eventually!
Black Knight says
Good news: the workouts are going well, you feel (are) strong, you do the speed-works and you didn’t put on weight despite Eastern time.
I am very glad.
Have a good sunday.

Things have been crazy here and the blog is always the first thing to go. I can only let the house and laundry go so long. Today I’ve tackled 7 loads of laundry and tomorrow I’ll vacuum and mop. I am taking time for myself today though and reading blogs while waiting on loads of laundry to finish.
