It’s day four now and counting since Thing 2 and I’ve been down with the flu. I thought I’d try and string a few words together before drifting into my next Nyquil-induced stupor. I can handle a 101-degree fever but simmering away at 102-103-104+ degrees is no picnic. I consider myself lucky, as the last time I had a flu like this one was right before the millennium. ย I’m also thankful it is not a stomach flu, although that works wonders (temporary I know) on weightloss.
Oh the fatigue, body aches, chills, exploding head and chest congestion. I’m pretty sure one wrong move and my lower back will snap clean across. It feels very weird to be out of commission for the most part.
This weekend the Caveman and Thing 1 subsisted on whatever they could scrounge up at Menards: Beefy jerky and Nerds.
I missed a run last week, my last long weekend run before the half marathon taper, and tomorrow’s workout is questionable as well. What does this mean for my race in two weeks? I’m still too feverish to think about it rationally, but it can’t be good.
The upside: You knew there was one right?
- It’s fund-drive time on PBS. Who doesn’t love a good fund drive? Oh right probably nobody. But Yanni performed at El Morro! Missed it though. Are you old enough to remember the Yanni at the Acropolis era? Ok that’s the fever talking.
- According to Dr. Wayne Dyer: We can become everything we imagine. I’m imagining a healthy, strong runner right now.
- According to Dr. Hyman and his Blood Sugar Solution: Once we get back in touch with true hunger, healthy foods taste delicious and cravings are gone. Why does it always sound so simple?
- Green tea and navel oranges never tasted so good.
- My race in two weeks is not an A race or even a B.
- I appreciate my usual good health more and will not take it for granted.
Do you get a flu shot?
Darlene says
No I never get a flu shot and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I don’t get it. LOVE YOR NEW SITE!!
Michel@Babyweightmyfatass says
I never get the flu shot. I know they say it doesn’t get people sick but eh I’ll pass. I hope you and Thing 2 feel better soon!
kari @ Running Ricig says
If you’re already watching PBS, it’s time to start watching Downton Abbey!
Feel better! That sounds horrendous.
misszippy says
Oh that just stinks! But look at all that great info you gathered from your couch! ; )
Feel better soon. Yes, I get a flu shot every year and so do my kids. Don’t know if it’s worth it or not, but it gives me a little peace of mind.
Bert says
How do I get your posts to show up on Blogger? Sorry to hear about the flu, hope it fades away quickly!
Christi says
Feel better real soon!
Fancy Nancy says
Love the new look!!! I get the flu shot every year but then again I work in an over sized petri dish also called a school!! I hope you are feeling MUCH better soon!
bobbi says
Oh Marcia – bummer! I hope all of you are feeling better soon…
No flu shot for me usually. But my kids all get them. So it’s KIND of like I get one too…
Miz says
I did BUT only to convince my 6 year old to do it ๐
Suzanne says
Hate that you guys are still sick! I had a flu shot once and got the flu that year so I haven’t gotten another one and I think I’ve only had the flu once. I like to take my chances I guess.
Meghan Forsberg says
Oh No! I had the swine flu TWICE in one year. Yikes – I feel your pain. FEEL BETTER! No flu shot for me – even after my experience.
Jen says
Hooray for the new sight but boo for the flu ๐ Hope you can rest up and recover with time to spare before your race. That’s interesting about the hunger thing… I wonder if that’s the same Dr. who says, “If you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, you’re not really hungry.”
Kovas says
I used to get a flu shot, but then the family CHO (Laima) told me not to.
Kate says
Ugh….the flu is so awful. ๐ Hope you’re feeling back to normal, soon!
I don’t get a flu shot. I rely on blind hope and my being-around-children-24/7-strengthed immune system. And did I mention blind hope?
Katherine @ Neon Blonde Runner says
OH MY GOSH I totally remember Yanni at the acropolis!!!!
Karen@ La Chanson de Ma Vie says
I hope you feel better soon. The flu is no fun!
I used to get flu shots when I was doing chemo and for five years after, but now I figure my body can fight it off just like everyone else’s does. ๐
Coy says
Well poopy Marcia! You sound down and out…but with a good side of humor. I was out for a week once, a couple years ago, had a crazy fever like you and didn’t run for over 7 days and when I finally came back I felt so strong, then it was my legs ready to rip a hole in the ground! Bet you’ll be the same! Don’t sweat the race, you’ll have an “A” one day soon!
Carilyn Johnson (@CarilynJohnson) says
I’m so sorry you’re sick. And the flu is the worst! I do get the flu shot after a very scary bout with it many years ago. Decided it was worth the shot, even if it isn’t 100% guarantee. I had never been so sick in my life, and am willing to do anything not to experience that again (I’d even wear Mickey Mouse ears and dance the jitterbug down Main Street if I thought it would help ๐ ).
Feel better soon!
sara@domesticallychallenged says
Bummer. Being sick- especially THAT sick- bites. Get well! Worry not about the race, but about getting to Minnesota soon to meet me!
Terzah says
Oh, Marcia and little one, feel better soon! Yes, in our house we all got flu shots (or in the kids’ case flu nose mists), and so far they’ve worked. There’s always something with your name on it, though. Rest up and feel better! Your positive outlook will help, I don’t doubt it.
kilax says
You poor thing! I hope you snap out of this soon. Maybe this will be some good rest before the HM?
I don’t get the shot.
Erin says
Booooo to the flu bug! So sorry you are sick and hope you are better asap. Hang in there. Hugs!
Julie says
Get well soon!!! No flu shots for me and I’ve managed to get through this year well so far.
I hate being sick -especially when the kids are sick, too. Who’s to take care of them? Who’s to take care of me? What a dilemma.
Beef jerky and nerds totally sounds like what’s on the menu around here when Daddy’s in charge.
Julia @ Pain, Pride, Perseverance says
LOVE LOVE LOVE the new blog!!! it looks fantastic! thinking of you! hope you feel better soon!
Andrea says
Sometimes I get a flu shot and sometimes I don’t. Stupid. I did not get one this year. Not sure why.
Travel Spot says
I do not get a flu shot and I probably get the flu once every 10 years. I hope you feel better soon!
Char says
You know you’re doing the right thing by not running through this flu and just getting better. It doesn’t matter about your race until you’re well again and then you’ll do what you can do.
Can you give me a bit of a dummy’s guide to getting your blogs? Can I get them via email and if so how?
Jill says
BUMMER, girl!! I am so sorry you and Thing2 are sick…and with the flu no less. Bleh. I see you’re getting caught up on some quality television, though.
I hope you feel better soon! I haven’t have the flu in years…probably will happen next week, just before I go to Iowa for the 50k.
xo
Marie @whysheruns says
Oh no! Feel better soon! Sorry to hear you’re sick with the flu! Get lots of rest. Which race are you signed up for in 2 weeks?
Carrie@FamilyFitnessFood.com says
I never get a flu shot. I got one for my son when he was in the high risk age group and then both kids got them a few years ago when everyone was all Swine Flu freak-out.
So sorry you’re sick. Feel better soon. Glad I found your new digs ๐
Amanda@Runninghood says
Oh, I’m so sorry you’ve been sick. ๐ I’m right there with you. This thing has hit HARD. uggh. I tried running yesterday and couldn’t even run under 10 min pace. ๐ Today I’ve just been sleeping moving so slowly.
And gosh, I’ve been a bad bad blogger…not sure when you changed your entire site around but it sure does look good!!! How did you do all of this? did you get help from someone or do it on your own?? I so want to do something like this someday and clean things up. Now isn’t the time for me but someday. Anyway, looks so good! And how did you get it to have a different address but still show up on my blog roll under the same link?? Does that makes sense?
Half-Crazed Runner says
I’m whoring out this advice to all my bloggers who are sick: I drink the Traditional Medicinals Echinacea Immune Support Tea. I feel this tea really helps me. (Note: caution on the box for allergy sufferers.)
Tara says
Oh crap Marcia!!! The flu?? I sure hope you and Thing 2 feel better soon, the flu is NO FUN at all.
Nope, didn’t get the flu shot. I haven’t had the flu since I was a kid. I say this and I am sure that I will now come down with the flu……
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Oh well that stinks! I’m sorry you’re down…and Thing Two as well. This was actually the first year I didn’t get the flu shot – made sure the kids were covered but never got around to it myself.
Hope you’re both feeling better soon!
marlene says
Oooh I love the new digs! Very nice.
Hope you are feeling better soon. ๐
