I’m sitting here sipping the last of my pumpkin spice coffee (Really. The entire bag is gone and its not even Halloween) reading the newspaper ( yes, I’m that old. The Chicago Tribune is probably keeping a printing press going just for me).
Apparently there’s a new career out there I was not aware of:
Recess Coach
The Coach hired at Namaste Charter School in Chicago has an annual salary of $23,000/year and is, according to the Chicago tribune:
“a modern-day schoolyard referee tasked with keeping fights and bullying to a minimum while also teaching games that could be unfamiliar to today’s school children–games like four square, tag, and dodgeball.”
Seriously? Schools need a coach to teach kids to play?
In my day, recess supervision was done by a teacher(s) on duty. He or she walked around with a whistle and kids would take refuge behind him/her if their game of tag got a little overheated.
The article goes on to say that most Chicago Public Schools have not had recess in 3 decades. Wow.
With school lunches already heavily under fire, I’m happy to see another component of the childhood obesity problem come under scrutiny as well.
Unlike school lunches where there’s an option to pack your own if you don’t like what’s being served, how can a child be active if there’s no time allotted to do so?
