I saw a comment on another blog the other day that made me sad.
It said something to the effect of (paraphrasing here):
…”especially when I read running blogs and see these super athletes running 10 and 11 miles at paces I cannot hold for even one mile….then I go out and run 2 miles and think what’s the point?…I’ll never be fast…”
Dear commenter, and anyone who has entertained similar thoughts:
There IS A POINT to your 2 miles. Every step you take at whatever pace makes a HUGE difference. I’m not responding because I consider myself one of those ‘super athletes’ you’re referring to (I still chuckle when anyone calls me the ‘A’ word) but because I started running when I was 50+ lbs. heavier and my knees ached when I WALKED.
WE ALL STARTED SOMEWHERE.
WE ARE ALL AT DIFFERENT PLACES IN OUR JOURNEY.
There will always be somebody faster, who works harder, who is mentally tougher, or more talented.
There will always be somebody slower, who doesn’t work as hard, is not as mentally tough or talented.
Just because somebody is faster or slower than you are DOES NOT ELEVATE OR DIMINISH THE WORK YOU’RE DOING.
Be PROUD you’re out there!
We all seek different things from our running/workouts.
We all struggle sometimes. Good Lord I struggled in the heat this morning.
Be inspired, not defeated.
Run FOR YOU.
If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.

I’ll dismount my soap box now.
