I mentioned a couple of weeks ago Thing 1 was doing container composting with her Girl Scout Troop.
First we got a 20-gallon container with a lid that snaps shut VERY tightly. Air holes were poked in the top.
We started off with shredded newspaper on the bottom topped with kitchen scraps. The more finely chopped the scraps are, the faster they’ll decompose. Live and learn.
More scraps are added daily.
After about a week, in came the worms. They’re in that black, dirty mass in the middle. We covered them with damp, shredded newspaper. Apparently the Girl Scout leader was shorted on her worm shipment, so there are more to come. Lucky me.
Despite what the kids say, so far there is no unpleasant odor. I’m taking odd pleasure in not putting all those kitchen scraps in the trash like I used to. Plus I’m looking forward to some black gold for our garden.
It’s a work in progress. I’ll keep you composted!
Have you/do you compost? Any tips?
