It’s been about a month now since our kitchen compost project started. It seems like we add SO much stuff yet the bin never fills more than maybe 1/3.
Much to my delight….not….soon after the worms were added, I noticed many of them were coming up to the top of the bin–eeeeew!
Apparently this indicates the balance of ‘green’ (kitchen scraps) and ‘brown’ (paper and yard clippings) are off. After adding more shredded newspaper and some garden waste, the worms have retreated and things seem to be back in balance.
That black stuff is worm ‘castings’…the stuff that makes compost so nutrient rich.
I’m happy to report there’s still no foul odor. I got worried when the temps climbed into the triple digits a couple weeks ago. Miraculously it just smells like soil.
The amount of trash we generate is greatly reduced too. Most of it is flexible plastic packaging. Everything else is recycled or composted. Way cool.
Supposedly we should have some garden-ready compost in a few more weeks.
I’ll keep you posted.
