School parades, class parties, friend parties, family fun, trick or treat. All of it results in great memories and an even greater load of candy. When I was a kid, we’d trick or treat (in those horrible, probably highly flammable plastic masks with the rubber band around the back of your head…am I showing my age here?) until the neighbors started saying “Isn’t it a bit late to be out?” then lug our loot home to be sorted, eaten and the rest hidden. I had five siblings so the hiding step was critical.
I may have blocked it out, but I don’t recall having any restrictions as far as the candy went. I nursed my massive mixing bowl-full for weeks on end, until only the dregs were left or I somehow forgot about it in it’s hiding spot, only to discover it months later. Oh how times have changed.
As much as I want to let the kids have their fun, I confess I’ve already given away/ditched lots of it and I’m plotting my earliest opportunity to confiscate the rest of that candy. All in the name of good health of course.
In the past I’ve:
Ferreted candy away for myself in the freezer
Repurposed it as dessert fillings and cake decorations
Donated it
Ditched it
Sent it to the office with the Caveman (I’m sure they were beyond thrilled…not)
Rationed it out: ie: let them have one piece after lunch and one after dinner (trust me this is not popular).
Do you limit your kids’ Halloween candy consumption? If so, how?
