With the holidays upon us, many of us are thinking about holiday shopping, holiday parties and of course holiday eating. I came across an article about a series of studies recently, in which researchers concluded that intentionally firming your muscles, by making a fist, for example, could increase one’s willpower.
According to the article, the studies didn’t involve spending money specifically, but the results translate to avoiding impulse spending. So if you’re in a store standing in front of a tempting purchase you know you shouldn’t buy, clenching your muscles should help you resist.
I couldn’t help but wonder if the results also translate to impulse eating. For example, if you’re at a party or other venue where delectable food is looking you in the face, would some clenching help you keep from diving face first into a tray of cocktail weenies?
Soon after reading this I found myself in line at Subway and noticed the lady in front of me was clenching…well her junk in the trunk so to speak. After making a mental note to self to not do any public rear clenching in yoga pants, I wondered if she was summoning her willpower?
Maybe she really wanted a foot long Philly Cheesesteak but due to repeated clenching action, came away with a salad instead? I’m sorry to say I was too mesmerized by her clenching to notice what she ordered. What I do know is that the next time I’m in the chocolate-covered fruit and nut aisle at Trader Joe’s, I may test this theory for myself.
How do you avoid impulse spending?
